Houston, Texas, Mar 28, 2009 / 04:46 pm (CNA).- Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, the Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, on Friday became the first American cardinal to publicly criticize the University of Notre Dame for inviting President Barack Obama to be this year’s commencement speaker and to award him with an honorary law degree.

In his weekly “A Shepherd’s Message” in the Texas Catholic Herald, Cardinal DiNardo expresses his disappointment with Notre Dame’s decision.

Cardinal DiNardo begins his column by commenting on Pope Benedict’s recent letter explaining his decision to lift the excommunications of the four bishops ordained by the schismatic Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. Praising the Pope’s call for internal peace in the Church, the Cardinal says that “vigorous and heartfelt discussion, even debate, needs to be placed in the arms of charity for effectiveness.”

What a shame the US bishops have failed to “shake down the thunder from the sky” in regards to this travesty.

Each time a bishop appears as a speaker at high school commencements, it’s with no small amount of pride they recognize the lucky few heading for ND. This spring, bishops should pay no more attention to ND then they do any other second tier secular school. Save the cheers for Ave Maria.

Cardinal DiNardo may not be a Native Texan, but he is showing our fighting Texas spirit by standing up for something that is very wrong. How a university that bears our Blessed Mother’s name could invite President Obama as its commencement speaker and then bestow upon him an honorary degree is beyond my comprehension? What was the University’s president thinking about when he did this?

I only hope that the other bishops in the Texas Conference follow his example. Even though I do not live in his ecclesial province (wish we were under him), he is my hero! 👍

Sadly, you’re seeing this kind of thing on a lot of Catholic campuses. I think St. Catherine’s in Minnesota had Arriana Huffington or somebody like that speak a few years ago. I couldn’t believe it.

Remember in school ‘’‘I may dis agree with what you say but will defent tothe death your right to say it.’’ Over 70% of the student body wants the President to speak to them President Barack Obama is a very honorable and intelligent man, he deserves the honorary degree in law. I am embarrassed when the catholic church follows the poison of the religious right. I pray that the Catholic church doesn’t become a one issue CULT. ND President John Jenkins likes our president, so does the catholic voters who voted for him.
I like Arriana Huffington, she makes sense to me. You have become the disloyal minority party.
My personal views, our Cardinal Mahoney welcomes you all, no excommunications, do you think he voted for Obama too?

Most Catholics are open-minder and accepting of others. The youth of America want to hear the different views of our leaders. The majority of Americans share Arriana Huffington’s views.
The majority of Americans voted Democratic last year, remember. I hope in the next eight years, we will see more open-minded Americans at our Catholic Schools.
‘‘I may disagree with what you say but will defend to the death your right to say it’’
Lets pray together for the success of our president, may his plans for America be helpful to build up the industrial and banking systems.
We are our brothers keeper

We are not our brothers enabler…Catholics are obedient to scripture which forbids murder…I will pray this person has a change of heart and does the right thing

Did you ever hear the sermon on the Moun?t…Christ says you can’t serve God and Mamon

Here’s the response of 11 student groups right on Notre Dame’s campus who are so disturbed by Notre Dame’s president Fr.Jenkins’ decision to allow Pres Obama come on their campus and literally besmirch their graduations and the name of Catholic values and the traditions formerly upheld at Notre Dame, but sadly not often any more.

I’m not so sure about that. Don’t make Ms. Huffington out to be a moderate centrist. She’s not. I’m not saying we shouldn’t be open to others people viewpoints. Read some of David Horowitz’s accounts of how he has been treated at many colleges. I do not condone that behavior to anyone. Iranian President Ahmadinajad was treated better than most conservative speakers at colleges are. That said, I think in the context of a supposed Catholic school’s beliefs, you can’t invite people who are zealously disrespectful to what we hold sacred like Arriana Huffington.

Sure, defend to the death - but I will NOT invite you into my home so you can teach your lies to my children. I have never met one responsible parent who is dedicated to giving his/her children what they “want.” Rather, parenthood obliges one to provide children with what they NEED. Parents who enrich ND with tuition fees and donations might have become extraordinarily lax in maintaining their own values, but the alumni of ND who have been ND’s greatest boosters and donors are NOT pleased with ND’s decion to honor a man who should not be honored. The Catholic Church should and must and does lead the religious right! The right above all others is the right to life. A few words from the article:

“"I find the invitation very disappointing,” Cardinal DiNardo writes.

“Though I can understand the desire by a university to have the prestige of a commencement address by the President of the United States, the fundamental moral issue of the inestimable worth of the human person from conception to natural death is a principle that soaks all our lives as Catholics, and all our efforts at formation, especially education at Catholic places of higher learning.”

According to Cardinal DiNardo, “the President has made clear by word and deed that he will promote abortion and will remove even those limited sanctions that control this act of violence against the human person. The Bishops of the United States published a document a few years ago asking all Catholic universities to avoid giving a platform or an award to those politicians or public figures who promote the taking of unborn human life. Even given the dignity of Office of the President, this offer is still providing a platform and an award for a public figure who has been candid on his pro-abortion views."

“Particularly troubling, he continues, is the Honorary Law Degree since it recognizes that the person is a ‘Teacher,’ in this case of the Law. I think that this decision requires charitable but vigorous critique.”"

Remember in school ‘’‘I may dis agree with what you say but will defent tothe death your right to say it.’’ Over 70% of the student body wants the President to speak to them
If 70% of the ND student body decided to jump off a cliff, I’m sure I wouldn’t follow them.
President Barack Obama is a very honorable and intelligent man, he deserves the honorary degree in law.
There is no honor in someone who treads on the rights of the unborn in the name of “science.”
You have become the disloyal minority party.
How far we have come from the days when the wicked George W. Bush reigned and dissent was patriotic! 😃

But seriously, I find your comment terrifying. It seems that the supporters of Barack Obama would have us all fall in line or be accused of “disloyalty to the regime.” Creepy.
My personal views, our Cardinal Mahoney welcomes you all, no excommunications, do you think he voted for Obama too?
I do not know, nor do I care. It doesn’t make a whit of difference with regards to the moral implications of voting for Obama.

there is a priest that was given an award from Notre Dame that is returning it…I didn’t catch his name but he was on the World Over with Raymond Arroyo

Dear Fr. Jenkins:

You are, no doubt, being inundated with letters, phone calls and emails objecting to the decision of Notre Dame to invite President Obama to give the commencement address this year and to receive an honorary doctorate from your university.

I feel compelled to write to you as a brother priest to express my own dismay at this decision which I see as dangerous for Notre Dame, for the Church, for this country, and frankly Father, for your own soul.

I have had the honor to speak at Notre Dame over the years in my capacity as the president of the Acton Institute. I recall the sparkling discussion and questions from the student body, notably from a number of the Holy Cross Seminarians. I have, in fact, been invited to your campus on a number of occasions and on my last visit I was given a statue of the Lladro Blessed Mother in appreciation of my speech. I was told the statue was blessed by Fr. Hesburgh. It has occupied a special place in our religious community since then.

Father, I have no degree or awards from Notre Dame to return to you to indicate how strongly I feel about this scandalous decision. So here is what I have decided to do:

I am returning this statue to your office because what once evoked a pleasant memory of a venerable Catholic institution now evokes shame and sorrow. The statue is simply too painful a reminder of the damage and scandal Notre Dame has brought to the Church and the cause of human life in this decision.

Moreover, I will encourage the young people from my parish and within our diocese to consider universities other than Notre Dame for their college career and I will further encourage other priests in my diocese to do the same. I will also discourage Notre Dame alumni to make donations to the University.

And you may rest assured that I will make this sentiment known from my pulpit and in other public outlets as the occasions present themselves.

This is not a matter of abortion (I presume we agree on how evil it is); nor is it about free speech (you could have invited the president to a discussion for that). This is about coherence. You no longer know who you are as a Catholic institution.

It pains me to write this letter to you. I ask that you go before the Blessed Sacrament and look into your soul – the soul of priest – and reverse this decision before more scandal is brought to the Church.

You and the students under your pastoral charge will be in my prayers and Lenten sacrifices.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Robert Sirico

What a rock star Fr Sirico is. I love it when he joins Laura Ingraham. He is model for all priests. I hope other award recipients will take his cue and publicly return their honors, and the alumni will email the school alum officer and let him know the annual gift won’t be in the mail.

“different views”? No. Church teaching, then other views. Being open minded does not mean accepting other views uncritically. The majority of Americans share Arianna Huffington’s views?? Care to back that up?

Peace,
Ed

This Fr Jenkins should be reassigned for his disobedience!.
I am disturbed and confused by the behaviour of Fr Jenkins, I do not understand why he is a Priest in The Catholic Church. How is it that a Priest can believe that he is doing the right thing here. How does he ignore what the Bishops and now the Cardinal are saying to him.

How does someone who has recieved The Sacrament of Holy Orders even invite him in the first place.

How is it that a Priests does not understand his faith and know that this is so very wrong. Does he not believe what the Church teaches? does he not believe his soul will be in garve danger by inviting this killer of babies to speak?

I am totally flamoxed by this, I trully do not get it? why is he still a Priest, and I don’t mean by being excomunicated but he himself why?🤷

How many more Bishops have to say something about the issue until Fr. Jenkins changes his mind?

I wish the cardinals would line up and do the old Hail Mary pass, and win one for the Gipper
