Notre Dame, Jesuit colleges welcome HHS mandate ‘compromise’

Nobody deserves our sympathy here, least of all the bishops who pushed for socialized health care for the last 50+ years. But they are, at last, beginning to stand up (if only because they are now, quite literally, under the gun). I have seen nothing since the mandate was announced to suggest that they have lost their man voice or their nerve.

Let’s give the bishops the benefit of the doubt and form ranks with them and trust their good sense to learn a lesson from this.
I’ve already seen how situations like these play out in the military when trying to coddle our enemy.

It ain’t rain falling on our heads, brother… rain ain’t yellow.

Does this news story surprise anyone, anywhere? I think the real surprise would be if Notre Dame denounced the policy, the administration, and Sibelius as anti Christian. But somehow, I don’t see that happening.

The bishops of the USA deserve our respect and our backing. They have done a good job with this one. They’re standing up to this affront and that’s what they’d ought to be doing. I’m proud of them now.

I’m not insulting individuals, and I named no one. If the shoe fits, they shall wear it along with the emperor’s “clothes”.

I am American. Yes. I am in a country which has a Constitution, which this Administration seems hellbent on shredding. As an American, I have a duty to fight that. Right now it’s with words. Eventually, it will turn into violence, though not at my wish, discretion, or choosing of the time. I will merely respond in kind. This is an illegal move through and through. It is ILLEGAL per the foundations of this nation. It is the move toward socialism which already suffocates those across the sea. Better dead than Red.

As a Catholic, the healthcare ruling is outright immoral. In that regard, I fight it on those grounds.

As per Soetoro, he doesn’t meet the requirements. Even IF he was born in Hawaii, his dad was a British citizen as Kenya, at the time, was under your little colonial structure. Dual-citizens cannot be President. That’s just one reason. This thread isn’t the place to argue that, though I don’t mind stating it. Google will answer all on that. Further, an invalid election is not going to render a valid President. I’ll die before I call that man President and mean anything other than a title he stole.

Compromise with the man and his administration is nothing but more of the same- dancing with the devil and wondering why your feet are broken and have hoof marks. Well, gee, I wonder why?

Where are you originally from? You’re posting from London right?

What do you think of the little gift Obama gave the Queen: an ipod with pictures of himself, natch? LOL. I also hear he gave Mr. Brown American movies that wouldn’t even play on your native video equipment.

Again, I would really encourage people to actually read Fr. Jenkins statement. It’s not a ringing endorsement of the “compromise”. It is a “wait-and-see-trying-to-extend-the-benefit-of-the-doubt-so-as-not-to-burn-any-bridges” type of statement that the USCCB initially released as well. It seems likely to me that Jenkins waited for the USCCB to respond and then more or less followed their lead. After all, he does say, "we look forward to joining the U.S. bishops and leaders from other religious institutions to work with the administration to resolve them.

Are we really that desparate to smear Notre Dame that we cannot pass up a single opportunity to roll our eyes and say “Figures!” based on the innuendo of news headlines?

More or less based on the history of their failures and silence, as well as outright letting someone like Obama even speak at a ND function. The parochial vicar of the parish I attend RCIA was one of only 10 (ND) priests to sign a statement admonishing ND for this. Meanwhile, Obama got to be presented with honors and a microphone to spread his lies and lay foundations which are uneven and shall crack the building in half upon ground shift.

In an interview with Dolan, he said that Fr. Jenkins received a call from the White House that morning and he called Dolan to let him know and that he had told the White House they need to talk with Archbishop Dolan about it. That’s more than some other Catholic figure did.

I think it’s an exaggeration to say that Jenkins’ statement “welcomes” the “compromise”.
Except the “compromise” is in the President’s word only. I just realized this as looking at my own Archdiocesan Website. The President on Friday evening signed the ORIGINAL MANDATE. Nothing in the mandate at least on paper was changed! And on the following Sunday the Press Secretary said that they are done with it. It was finalized on Friday, end of story! This was Friday evening after the famous Friday morning nationwide press conference. He signed the original mandate. I know sometimes I am a little slow:p but I did not realize this until I looked at their website. I haven’t heard anyone report on this though…did you guys realize this or am I the only one running a little behind.:o

I did hear that, but it definitely seemed to escape the notice of many. It wasn’t very widely reported. I wonder why…

I guess if we were to extend Obama the benefit of the doubt, he might still be working on the particulars or perhaps a supplemental addendum. Given his track record, I find it difficult to extend him the benefit of the doubt.

I think last Friday’s second USCCB statement says it best: we’ll do our best to pursue justice through the other two branches of government: legislative and judicial. The executive branch has made it pretty clear they’re not interested in working with Catholics on this issue. That’s quite unfortunate, but that seems to be the reality.

I pray soon-to-be-Cardinal Dolan comes back to the States renewed and refreshed from the Consistory ready to tackle this issue in the best way possible. It’s going to be a marathon, not a sprint.

You are echoing the sentiments of Cardinal Dolan. He finds it hard to give the President the benefit of the doubt, given his past record…this is very understandable given the number of times he has betrayed the Bishops. The President had been very reassuring to the Bishops in the past about this mandate that was coming. And then he turned the tables on them…“Burn me once shame on you, burn me twice shame on me.”
