For many members of the Notre Dame Class of 2009, the uproar surrounding the university’s decision to honor Barack Obama with this year’s commencement address, and to bestow on him a doctorate of laws, has provoked strong feelings about what the ensuing conflict will mean for their graduation.

I know how they feel. Ten years ago, my heart was filled with similar conflicts as we came closer to the day of my own Notre Dame commencement and my commissioning as an officer in the United States Army.

You see, I was three months pregnant.

That March, I had gone—alone—to a local woman’s clinic to take a test. The results were positive, and I was so numb I almost didn’t grasp what the nurse was getting at when she assured me I had “other options.” What did “other options” mean? And what kind of world is it that defines compassion as telling a young woman who has just learned she is carrying life inside her that she has the option to destroy it?

When I returned to campus, I ran to the Grotto. I was confused and full of conflicting emotions. But I knew this: No amount of shame or embarrassment would ever lead me to get rid of my baby. Of all women, Our Lady could surely feel pity for an unplanned pregnancy. I recalled her surrendered love to God’s invitation to become the home of the Incarnate Word. “Let it be done to me according to thy word,” she had said. In my hour of need, on my knees, I asked Mary for courage and strength. And she did not disappoint.

Read the entire article… its so worth the time.

Wonderful letter. I went and read the whole thing and recommend it to everyone. 👍👍

WOW! I give this young woman so much credit for her path and for her decision to be a mom in this world that makes is so convenient to abort. I would like to hear Fr. Jenkins response to reading her letter.

Am giving this thread a bump, since the letter is awesome. Please that the time to link to it. The young woman makes the best point of all when it comes to the Obama controversy at ND graduation.

I doubt he will. He hastoo much in common with the father of her child.

Intersting, a young woman who apparently I went to school with and probably even knew, pours her heart out to this world about the goodness of our Blessed Mother and negativity somehow results from a poster. I thought these boards were monitored to avoid hurtful remarks?

What insinuations are you making about this child’s father? …that he was encouraging the mother to have an abortion? He may have. I have no idea. I do know that one should not jump to conclusions because those conclusions could be hurtful.

What insinuations are you making about Father Jenkins? …that he is pro-choice? Well, he’s not. He has vowed in a statement to the alumni senate two weeks ago that the university is pro-life and does not stand in line with Obama’s position on life issues. He vowed that Notre Dame has never nor will ever participate in any research dealing with embryonic stem cells…only adult stem cell research will take place in Notre Dame laboratories.

To this young woman, kudos. You are why I still (even in trying moments like these) find pride in Notre Dame and her students/alumni. 👍

My apologies Robby…after reading the letter, I now know that her boyfriend was encouraging an abortion. Nonetheless, Fr. Jenkins is definitely pro-life.

and most importantly, that letter was so well written…I hope it touches his (Fr. Jenkins’) heart as he reflects upon the Obama Drama.

What apologist nonsense on Jenkins! He is notorious for mouthing Catholic doctrine
and then acting otherwise. Pro-life??? In mouth only. On the 17th, the president who
has already done more to ensure the destruction of the unborn, via the Mexico City
Policy and the upcoming FOCA legislation, will don the robe of Notre Dame in defending
and promoting the ‘choice’ of death to the thunderous applause of the graduates and alumni,
such as the one who defends him on this blog. Jenkins will be grinning from ear to ear
and will afterward marvel on how ‘pro-life’ this president really is…
