**Notre Dame president says bishops’ statement support Obama invitation
April 09, 2009 **

Father John Jenkins, the president of Notre Dame, cited the US bishops’ 2004 document, “Catholics in Political Life,” to justify the school’s invitation to President Barack Obama to speak at commencement.

In a letter to the university’s trustees, Father Jenkins argued that the thrust of the document supported the invitation. Although the bishops’ statement asked Catholic colleges not to honor public figures who reject Church teachings on key moral issues, the Notre Dame president claimed that this injunction applied only to Catholics public figures, and since Obama is not Catholic, his contempt for the ‘culture of life’ is not disqualifying.

I think (and it is just a personal opinion) that all students in opposition to President Obama speaking should stand up and pray the Rosary or the Our Father. Do it quietly so as not to be rude and interupt the president but something along this line would be a powerful statement.👍

Sounds like Father Jenkins ignored the spirit of the document in favor of a technicality.

This statement is the one which came out of the meeting at which Cardinal McCarrick withheld a letter from Rome

In the grand scheme of things, not a major issue. But as a Cathoic, it really bothers the heck out of me…We as Catholics are PRO LIFE and we do not compromise on this issue…

So you cant honor catholics who support killing children but you can honor non-catholics that support killing children?. And this Priest heads a major university???

When I read this and other Father Jenkins’ statements…justifying this Pres. Obama invitation action…and other things like presenting the V… Monologues on campus…I immediately want to jump to the CCC for the “forming the conscience” teachings…and the following paras leap out at me…especially 1793 on “invincible ignorance”:
**
CCC**
1792 Ignorance of Christ and his Gospel, bad example given by others, enslavement to one’s passions, assertion of a mistaken notion of autonomy of conscience, rejection of the Church’s authority and her teaching, lack of conversion and of charity: these can be at the source of errors of judgment in moral conduct.

1793 If - on the contrary - the ignorance is invincible, or the moral subject is not responsible for his erroneous judgment, the evil committed by the person cannot be imputed to him.** It remains no less an evil, a privation, a disorder**. One must therefore work to correct the errors of moral conscience.

However…the more I think of this Father Jenkins & N.D (Non Doctrinal Catholic University)…I really believe that his problem (and many like him, especially Catholic Politicians) is** not “invincible ignorance” but “invincible pride” **…no one…and I mean no one is going to rule over a Catholic University’s academic freedom…not even Peter himself (The Pope) or his fellow apostles–James, John, Matthew, etc (The Bishops). Stop and think about Pope Benedict’s academic credentials and his spiritual and administrative authority via the (USCCB) Bishops…and this Father Jenkins is going to find a way to ignore or refute B-XVI…stand by for another “Da Vinci Notre Dame” book and movie by that Brown, Howard and Hanks…that crew of “usual suspects”!

In sum…at** N.D.** there are many Administrators, Professors and Student **Catholics ** …but few Catholic Administrators, Professors and students!(an observation by Prof Peter Kreeft, Boston College, in another scenario, applied by me…to N.D.)

Catholics need to encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ, not estrange them. I’ve watched too many Catholics take up the worldly secular meassage over the last 40 years but it was a slow, gradual poisoning. Some of them do not realize just how far away they are. Let’s actively work to bring the Catholic community back to life.

Peace,
Ed

Things like this invitation are the kinds of things that encourage millions of Catholics to vote for abortion-supporting politicians.

“It would be better for him if a millstone were hung round his neck and
he were cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.”

I think if I were Jenkins, I would have a lot of trouble sleeping at night.

Look at the bright side too, Ridgerunner: although a lot of bad has come from it, this incident has also helped raise awareness of the radical nature of many of the President’s policies. I wonder how many of them realized he was against the medical conscience clause, for example. I bet a lot more Catholics know now!

Something to be said for your proposition. Nevertheless, it’s a potential scandal to many that ND did it.

Myself included, I have 2 degrees from ND. I just pray that this scandal prompts a self-reexamination within the ND community, as well as with American Catholic voters. This could go from bad to worse, or bad to better… let’s pray for the latter!

With logic like this, I can’t believe this guy is the head of the university. I can’t imagine what other ways he contorts the teachings of the Church in his position. Shameful.

He hasn’t given in to recognizing gay student groups, actually. A lot of so-called Catholic universities have, so Father Jenkins and the rest of the ND administration are a bit of an enigma in the sense that they’ve been obedient to the Magisterium when it wasn’t “politically correct”.

Yes, the scandal is horrible. The president of ND encourages all his students to dillute the truth of the Catholic Church. It is horrible since this is a Catholic University. They have more responsibility than this.

Who needs secularists when you you have a president of a Catholic University that pulls things like this?
