While respecting the pursuit of academic excellence, should a Catholic University invite a President who supports a culture of death to speak at commencement?

Cheers to Bishop D’Arcy for deciding to stay away from this terrible moment in one of our countries former great Catholic Universities.

Shame on the President of Notre Dame and his board of trustee’s. Shouldn’t all of this board resign?

The most shocking here is Bishop Jenky. Yes, all members of that board should either not attend and stand together with the Church and her leaders, or they should resign from the board of trustees.

my grizzled, hardened response thinks it’s all about money and prestige.

i doubt anyone’s going to resign.

Please correct me if i’m wrong.

I left the Catholic Church for reasons such as this.

I can’t believe anyone is surprised that something like this is coming out of the University of Notre Dame.

I presume that this means President Obama has been invited?

It seems they wouldn’t do much better asking a lot of Catholic politicians to show up, either.

All very good points. It is just frustrating that an institution can claim to be Catholic, but not stand firm when it comes to putting on a big show.

Not me… :nope: Catholic in name only. Seriously though, they should give up the name.

Notre Dame as if it had not disgraced itself enough by inviting into its once hallowed halls the (previously) civilized world’s most pre-death leader in the free world has doubly injured itself by proposing to also grant the great “Obamanation of The West” an honorary college degree! Good God - what utter cheekiness of Notre Dame to even dare to present itself as Catholic anymore.

The battle lines have been drawn - its time to take back our Catholic universities and cast out the false Catholics in shame then start taking back our country from the secular-humanists who want to sacrifice the flesh of our innocent children on the altar of secularism for Satan. Evil is present in a real and vivid sense in false Catholics and we better start cleaning house. If we don’t start taking back our Catholic universities and reclaiming our Christian values in the this country God will strike this nation down in flames and bring it to its knees to do penance.

Agreed. Seems like this is an issue that all Christians can agree on. I wish I lived closer, I’d be picketing the route.

I don’t see why Notre Dame has to invite Mr Obama to their collge conmecment

I would not go even if I was invited …

Is there some reason to assume that EVERY single member of the ND Board of Directors agrees with this action? That’s a fairly big group. I doubt very much that they all approved of this action or even knew about it ahead of time.

The reason Bishop Jenky sits on the board of directors, I assume, is because he is a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross and was a chaplain at Notre Dame for many years before he came to Peoria. I have not yet heard of his official reaction to this development, but I have a hard time believing he would approve of it in any way. I used to live in the Diocese of Peoria and never knew him to be anything but very orthodox.

I was listening to an evangelical radio program, and it seems like this is just more fuel for the fire on the attacks on the church. I wanted to call and give the real catholic position, but they made it seem like, within the catholic church the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. This is a problem greater then what Rev. Jenkins probably imagined.

Here’s the problem with that petition. It reads, in part: “Presidents have addressed such essential issues as international affairs, peace building, poverty, and human rights.”

But “human rights” is the opposite of what President Obama stands for. So it seems that your own petition shoots itself in the foot.

Unless you’re one of those unusual fringe atheists who don’t believe in human rights at all, but only pragmatic social contracts… but that’s not what your profile says about your religion.

Anyway… I’ve no idea how we hope to take back these Boards. We handed over control of Catholic institutions to rich, white, upper-middle-class Catholics In Name Only a generation ago. We no longer have power, leverage, or money to take back our hallowed halls. Only thing left to do that I can see is take away their Catholic charter, which remains, in nearly all cases, the right of the local ordinary. See how they like THAT! 😛
