Notre Dame student paper spikes prof's column [CN-USA]

The editor of the University of Notre Dame’s campus newspaper has refused to publish a column by retired law professor Charles Rice defending Catholic teaching on homosexuality.

However, I am a bit surprised that the CathNewsUSA article describes the cartoon as merely “degrading to homosexuals.” Here is the joke: How do you turn a fruit into a vegetable? Answer: Hit him with a baseball bat.

I think the joke is a bit more than demeaning. Certainly it caused a big uproar on campus, and considering the cartoon ran just six weeks ago, this seems to have influenced the editor’s decision. I’m not saying it was the right decision, but perhaps the professor should understand the sensitive nature of the topic at this time and simply file the column away for another month or even next school year.
