Notre Dame University no longer a Catholic University.

The University of Notre Dame is no longer a Catholic University. Even though the local bishop has not officially proclaimed this, it is obvious that the anti-catholic course the university has steered in recent years, culminating with today’s commencement address by the most pro-abortion president in history, leaves little doubt that NDU is a “Catholic in name only” institution. When an 80 year old priest is arrested for saying a Rosary, for an end to abortion, on the grounds of a Catholic university, what does this say about the NUD and its administration.

All current and potential future supporters of NDU should give serious consideration to withholding all financial support from this institution. Any parents who may be under the false impression that NDU is a Catholic University are mistaken. If they are assuming that their children will get a truly Catholic education there, they should thing again. Any potential future NDU students, who are serious about their faith, should consider another school, preferably one that is listed on the Newman Guide to Catholic colleges.

The Catholic Church in America is drowning in it’s apathy.

I watched a little of Obama’s speech today. Oh, he was in fine form, maybe the best I’ve seen, very very slick and very very hip. He’s the kind of guy who could sell most folks a carrion sandwich, and they’d be going on and on about how good it was.

And the stadium was full of folks like that. Standing ovation at the end. Two ND presidents looking victorious, and apparently vindicated by the crowd’s overwhelmingly positive response. Almost as if God has no choice but to bless them, because they are so great.

Nauseating to see so many ‘Catholics’ so misguided by this man. To see them fall for the ‘juvenile-diabetic-trumps-the-embryonic-stem-cell’, was like ipecac for my tummy. I cannot believe I share religious beliefs with this crowd.

The road to heaven is not paved on popularity, or lead by a feel-good secular messiah. So I agree with the thread author - Notre Dame has fully declared itself, and Catholic it is not. Maybe Mammon University would be more appropriate.

Obama supports Planned Parenthood who practices their pernicious ‘services’ 96% of the time in minority neighborhoods. Black women make up just 6% of the total population and yet receive 36% of all abortions in the US. 13 million brown-skinned babies have been aborted in the US since 1973. Pretty signal achievment for the ‘first black POTUS’, no? If this is how he champions the cause of blacks, what can we expect for the rest of us?

Obama also is devoted to the Liberation Theology taught by Jeremiah Wright, James Cone and Cornell West. That is sticking the thumb in the eye of the Magisterium.

I checked the graduation requirements for a basic liberal arts degree at ND and noticed that only 6 units of Philosophy and six units of Theology are required. When I received a Catholic university degree years ago 15 units of Philosophy (mostly Aquinas) and 10 of Theology were required. We also had other requirements such as curfews (10:15 school nights, 12:30 weekends) If we were late we would receive demerits and could not leave the dorm the following Saturday night.
If the only thing that makes ND a Catholic university is the tiny 12 unit requirement I certainly would advise students to take those 12 units online from a reputable Catholic university or attend a “real” Catholic university during the summer. Make sure you study Aquinas! Then, attend a public university with an active Newman Club during the school year.

This is my thought exactly. Only a miracle and lots of time would be needed to turn this University around. I don’t think it can be done. I think the Catholic Church needs to strip this University of anything Catholic, demand a name change and let them go on their secular progressive, moral relativistic way. And they need to do this yesterday. In my dreams, but this is what should be done.

Notre Dame is truly an embarrassment to the Catholic Church. Shame on Notre Dame for creating yet another scandal. I would not send my kids there. I would not financially support this institution in any way. This school repeatedly snubs its nose at the teachings and the Magisterium. I am embarrassed as a Catholic. I am a current Sopomore at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus Ohio and we are a liberal arts college and even with our small population of Catholics on campus we are keeping up with the Catholic Church. We have Mass everyday. We have a pro-life group that meets bi-weekly, we have an active Campus Ministry, go on retreats. Have vocation meetings for those of us discerning the religious life. We have Eucharist Adoration as well as Expostition weekly. We also say the Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy weekly. We have daily mass every day of the week. We can choose from our own chapel or go over to the Mother House, the Dominican Sisters of Peace, formally the Dominican Sisters of the Springs. At first when I came here to visit I fell in love with the campus and I wanted to go here. Then I was beginning to worry that it was going to be liberal like NDU has become. Believe me I know they are liberal. When I was in High School, two years in a row I went to ND Vision which are Catholic Retreats over the summer for Catholic female, and male teenagers. They were nice programs. I met a lot of nice people. I still talk to some of them today. But when I took a tour of campus and details about how the campus doesn’t offer this and that daily as other Catholic Campuses do such as University of Stubenville and Duquesne.

I would not recommend NDU to anyone. It gets a for me. But Ohio Dominican University, University of Stubenville and Duquesne University get my !

In other words there are all kinds of opportunities for students to live their religion at Notre Dame. I’m saddened to see that so many are fooled by Obama, but they’ve got lots of time to grow up and learn from sad experience like the rest of the country will be doing during the next four years.

That they offer morning prayer and vespers (at least everyday except Saturday during the summer, don’t know what they do in the winter). That there is a constant presence of clergy and religious on campus and that there is also seminary on campus. The library also has one of the largest theological collections in the country. When the moto proprio was announced about the Latin Mass, ND soon began to offer it on campus and even had liturgical faculty offer sessions to explain it to anyone who was interested.

I don’t think we can (or should) judge Notre Dame on the basis of one bad decision by Father Jenkins. I think you need to look at the totality. I doubt strongly that everyone at the graduation ceremony was wildly cheering Obama. There were a lot of faculty (like myself) who refused to be associated with this graduation. I think if you were to spend a few weeks here you might come to understand Notre Dame a little better – sure there are problems, but there is a lot of good here as well. The wheat and the tares grow together. The fact they had an alternate graduation for those who refused to attend the Obama ceremony in a way testifies they figured out they messed up. It would not have been a good idea to rescind the Obama invitation once it was accepted. They’ll think twice next time.

When you described the good and holy offerings at ND it made me think that you are living in an environment that could be a little piece of heaven. America also “could be” a little piece of heaven with all the many good things that are offered for Catholics. The only problem is the leadership. ND has the potential but has lost the leadership necessary to inspire the average ND student to seek holiness. We “outsiders” would love ND to be an inspiring and holy Catholic institution of learning. That’s why we are praying for a change of leadership. We don’t want you to suffer because of your wayward leader. You sound like you are able to thrive in spite of your leader but we know there are many students and faculty members who are not as mature and discriminating ( in a good sense) as you are. God love you!

Sadly, we have been holding ND in our prayers for a long time and they have yet to “think twice next time.”
