And I was born into the Novus Ordo.

First of all I am not critiquing the TLM, in fact if you read my other postings about my first visit I enjoyed it very much (besides I can critique what ever I want) and had no problems with it at all. I was only pointing out that not everyone that went to the TLM is “dressed” accordingly". You seem to take an offense from what I clearly saw when I attended a TLM:shrug:. That was my first time and I went dressed with shirt and tie.
What does that even mean? Would “according to what I feel is acceptable” be more accurate?
I am not liberal but I am no ultra (closed minded) conservative neither. For your informaiton I don’t like what liberals have done to the Church, but I also can’t stand people who dont accept something has been passed down by higher authority, in this case change.
Just what is a “liberal?” That seems to be a horribly misused word on these and other forums.
It only now sounds that the church is becoming more about politics (Rep. vs Dem) when clearly you are loosing the central point of the mass. Enough with the whole I am better then this or that. Christ does not want division in the Church. If we see others doing wrong the we pray for them and “if” the Lord wants us to do something about it then He will show us the way.
?

Many protestant hymns are actually more Catholic than some of the garbage shoved into our ears during Sunday Masses.
Agreed that the auditory assault can take many forms, has anyone else been subjected to bongo drums?

There is no specific rule, so I guess it is personal taste, but it seemed to me to extract any and all dignity.

you are not getting me. I am agreeing with you in your views! The “dress accordingly” was being addressed to “traditional” people who do not accept any type of wear except conservative.

I am using Republican vs Democrats as an example to what the Church is becoming.

Morgan,

You are right to be outraged. Our Lord gave you the grace to realize something is horribly wrong. If you had no outrage at this, then you’d have cause to worry.

Do you attend the Latin Mass regularly?

The Latin Mass is not necessarily the answer to this. Particularly if there is not one in the area available.

Have you considered taking this to the pastor? Perhaps the Bishop?

Ever since I’ve started going back to church a few years ago I made a huge effort to attend TLM strictly. I would attend the various monthly High Masses. I did this until I found my current parish. One of the main reasons I stopped going to mass (other than being young and stupid) was because I truly did not enjoy it. I couldn’t stand how modern it was. I was looking for something otherworldly and humble but all I got was Vatican II’s disaster. It was, and still is, very hard for me to sit through the 1960’s Protestant folk/pop. All the hand shaking is quite dorky. The crazy organ solos sound more like circus music than anything sacred.

I’m a teen, so I’ve grown up in this time. But, I share the same frustration towards the Novus Ordo. My big issues are Extraordinary Ministers & communion in the hand.
Music? Whatever. I can drown it out.

There are documents that speak against the abuse of EM’s I’ll list a couple.

Document name: Fidei custos
Written in the year: 1969
This it what it says:
whenever a priest is unavailable.

whenever the usual priest is unable to administer communion without difficulty
whenever the number of faithful wishing to receive communion is so great that the celebration of Mass would be unduly long.

Document name: "Immensae Caritatis "
Written in the year: 1973.

This is what it says:
During Mass, because of the size of the congregation or a particular difficulty in which a
celebrant finds himself
(A regular Mass doesn’t count. It has to be an actual crowd --like if the Pope or Bishop is having a special Mass.)
outside Mass --when distance makes it difficult to bring communion, especially as viaticum to the sick in danger of death; or when the sheer number of sick people, especially in hospitals or similar institutions, requires several ministers.

The Document “Inaestimabile Donum” said this:
Lay Eucharistic ministers have become such a familiar sight in our churches that we have ceased to be aware of their proper place. Again, Inaestimabile Donum states: “The faithful, whether religious or lay, who are authorized as extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist can distribute Communion only when there is no priest, deacon or acolyte, when the priest is impeded by illness or advanced age, or when the number of the faithful going to Communion is so large as to make the celebration of the Mass excessively long.”
Okay, so far I’m not seeing “Have ministers distribute communion every Sunday.”
Of course not. It was originally supposed to be an occasional thing.
And now, I believe we are abusing what is being taught.

Yes, it’s an accepted practice, but it’s an abuse to force or to intimidate anyone to take communion in the hand. I’ve been approached by at least one person in church as to why I take communion on the tongue and I don’t feel that’s justified.
This is what the OP said:

“Just about every parishioner refused to be given the communion wafer by mouth. They just held their hands out and popped it in themselves…”

NOTHING says that anyone was forced or intimidated into taking Communion in the hand. It says just the opposite, although I think that’s a bit of an overstatement. I don’t think the priest was trying to put the Host on people’s tongues and they clamped their lips closed and shook their heads.

As for your experience, perhaps the person who approached you was just wondering why you were doing something else. I’m sure there are plenty of people around who’ve never seen the priest place the Host on someone’s tongue, especially people under about 45 years old. People at our Latin Mass receive on the tongue, but I’ve never seen anyone at the other Masses do it. It might just have been something new to that person.

Yeh, about as speechless as all the CITT posters on CA. 😃
What does CITT mean? I can figure out that COTT means Communion on the Tongue, but I’d have said CITH for Communion in the Hand.

I’m also not sure what your comment means. I do CITH but I would never criticize you for doing otherwise. Since I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt, I’m going to assume you weren’t being snotty, and I’m the one who doesn’t understand.

Oh…well, other people already asked that, and I’m guessing it was a typo.

Layna,
I am only 27 and have just started going back to church within the last few years. I have been going to mass on and off since I was younger hoping and praying that I would finally understand and perhaps get the same experience from the mass that everyone else seemed to have. I could not figure out WHY church was nothing like the movies or the services held on certain holidays. Where was the chant? Finally I started doing a little reading on church history and learned about Vatican II and the changes made. Unfortunately being a teenager I was unable to travel to the few churches offering TLM, and I really didn’t feel like the effort should be this great. Why travel into NYC once a month for an hour mass? Once I hit my twenties and had a car I moved to CA. Apparently Los Angeles is the hub for TLM. I started going more often and eventually made my confirmation. Perhaps if TLM was offered more widely I would have gone to church on a regular basis.

Anyway! Enough of my bable!

Deave,
Actually, the Priest tried to give a few people the host by tongue (out of habit I guess?) but they’d just grab it instead.

Hmmm… I was just pondering the use of the word ‘grab’, with all its unpleasant and arrogant associations.

Originally, you said ‘they just held their hands out and popped it in themselves’.

Do you mean that they actually took the Host out of the priest’s hands and put It in their mouths straight away, or do you mean that they put their hands in the usual position to receive the Host into them, and THEN ‘popped’ It in?

There is a huge difference!

‘Grabbing’ It directly from the priest’s hands is gravely wrong and would be condemned by everyone - it’s unthinkable that any committed Catholic would dare to do it, in fact.

Could you clarify?

Paperwight,
I actually did see a few people take the host with their own hands and pop in it in their mouths. Others just held their hands out.

I completely understand. My family is going through a similar problem. We find it hard to attend a Latin Mass. There’s ONE church here that offers the Latin Mass, but it’s only on Sunday at 9 in the morning. And the church is like 50 minutes away. That’s difficult for us!

I used to live in California. San Diego, to be exact. And I’ve been raised Byzantine Catholic, so I’m used to tradition. Keep in mind, all the Byzatine churches are 50 minutes away from where I live now.

So, we have no choice but to settle for the Novus Ordo. And, this makes my mom upset.
She can’t stand the Novus Ordo. Ha! If she had it her way she’d be going to this church:
cantius.org/go

I wonder, do they even teach men how to say the Latin mass in the seminary?
Because, if a priest ever wanted to do a Latin mass, he should know how to do it. He should have the choice to do it. The only knowledge a priest has, shouldn’t only consist of the Novus Ordo.

:hmmm:

I’ve seen variations of this, especially when people were in a hurry.
Heavens above!

My preference is for CITH, and I’ve had some experiences as an EMHC involving other people’s spittle when giving COTT which I try not to think about as I feel nauseous when I do, but I am appalled!
