Columnist for the San Antonio Express-News, O. Ricardo Pimentel, a self-admitted former Catholic, has written a piece, beginning on Page 1 of the Metro Section that will probably not endear him with most Catholics:
“There are, apparently, faux Catholics and then real Catholics. We know this because of comments from those who have evidently appointed themselves arbiters of who is which. These are the people who dish out phrases such as “cafeteria Catholic” as if they were lunch ladies serving up heaping spoonfuls of catechism.”
“If they get the president to cave on birth control, however, it means that all of those throwing out that phrase “cafeteria Catholic” — to me personally and just about everywhere else — not only sit in judgment of who is Catholic but are able to get non-Catholics to knuckle under to church doctrine. It’s the new “religious freedom.”
Most noncelibate Catholics, who actually risk or will risk childbirth and the subsequent costs and obligations, have already confidently followed their consciences. To birth control.”
