WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s largest gun-rights lobby is calling for armed police officers to be posted in every American school to stop the next killer “waiting in the wings.”

The National Rifle Association broke its silence Friday on last week’s shooting rampage at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 children and staff dead.

The group’s top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said at a Washington news conference that, quote, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

America has 5% of the world’s population but 50% of the world’s guns.

NRA certainly knows how to sell stuff.

In July there were 7 theatres in Colarado showing The Dark Knight Rises. Only 1 of those 7 had a ban on concealed permit handguns and guess which of those 7 James Holmes targetted? Theatre with the ban on concealed permit weapons which was not the biggest theatre in Colorado or the closest to where he lived

Gun free zones are attracting mass killers because they know they will not be able to be repelled and they will be to create carnage. Portland Oregon shooting, Sikh temple Wisconsin shooting, Columbine High School shooting, Virginia Tech shooting, Aurora Colorado shooting and the Newton Connecticut shooting all took place in areas where concealed permit weapon handguns are banned

If the government is going to insist on continuing the stupid “Gun Free Schools Act” this would be a solution. If it was a such a good idea we’d have the “Gun Free Banks Act” now.

I like the idea… more so than teachers with guns. Police are trained for this kind of situation (to shoot to kill someone all while taking into consideration crowds, etc). Teachers should focus on teaching. Plus, a police officer would be free to roam the halls, check the doors and parking lots, etc where a teacher wouldn’t.

It would be a nice post for a police officer near retirement I would think–not too physically demanding, could work as a good will ambassador with the kids, plus an older officer probably has had kids of his own and can relate to them. He officer could take care of safety and security in the school (freeing up administrator time to focus on the kids) and can work on DARE and other such programs as well.

I think that an armed police officer in every school would be a great idea. I also think that the number of armed police officers should increase per school depending on the size of the school.

This should be common sense, but unfortunately common sense isn’t so common anymore.

As a cop who teaches police officers to respond to this kind of violence, this is an excellant solution, however, there are not nearly enough police officers to pull this off.

There’s also another problem: the schools. We’ve had SRO (School Resource Officer) possitions eliminated in my jurisdiction because the SCHOOL didn’t want armed officers in their school. The department was not willing to unarm their officer - which is a good thing - and the School eliminated the possition from their funding.

Any School with out an armed guard, these days, should be sued for not preparing for what, statistically, will be many times more likely to hurt or kill your children in school than anything else: violence.

As I’ve said on several other threads now: We spend MILLIONS of dollars on schools for what is considered ‘overlapping, multi-layered, redunant safety systems’ when it comes to school fire. The floor tiles, the carpet, the chairs, the doors, the paint the wall boards, the desks, the ceiling tiles have only one requirement for your school: That they are FIRE resistant / fire proof.

How many kids have been killed or injured in a school fire in the US in the last 50+ years? NONE ZERO ZILCH NADA. Yet we still have sprinkler systems, fire drills, fire safety awareness…

And howmany children killed or injured in school violence each year? At the time 1999 was an All time record with 35 killed and A QUARTER OF A MILLION INJURED IN SCHOOL VIOLENCE. How many killed / injured in School fire that year? Zero

But wasn’t that the year of Columbine? Yes. So the stastic is skewed? Negative Ghost Rider. 2004 was a new record: 48 killed and still HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS INJURED in SCHOOL VIOLENCE. How many killed / injured in school fire that year? Zero

I could go on and on but I’ll leave it to the experts. Here’s two articles that detail our DENIAL and a soultion: ret. Lt. Col. Dave Grossman is the world’s leading expert in the phychology of human to human agression, i.e. Combat, which is EXACTLY what is happening in our schools: war.

GOD HELP US ALL! :signofcross:

It would be a good job for those soldiers returning from overseas who can’t find a job.

That’s a much better idea than the ridiculous notion that’s been floated about arming the teachers. A cop is a cop, with training in how to handle weapons and dangerous situations. It’s a career unto itself, with ongoing training courses and upgrades in equipment, knowledge, and tactics. They also would have their police radios and be able to summon help very quickly.

Likewise, teaching is a career and teachers should be freed up to teach. There are already too many things teachers have to take on. I remember some e-mail that was floating around - if anyone knows which one I am referring to, please post a link, I’d like to have a copy again! 😉 It said all these things that a teacher has to do, like inspect their heads for lice and teach them manners and things that they should have learned at home. It goes on in this vein for a long time and at the end it says: “And I’m not allowed to PRAY?!”

There was another mass shooting again this morning. Guns are the issue. All guns capable of firing more than one shot without reloading should be outlawed. And single-shot guns should be tightly regulated with any violation resulting in jail.

We need Obama to get to appoint one replacement of one of the conservative justices and then pass some new laws.

Do you agree with the NRA that an armed police officer should be posted in every American school?
