Being one who lives outside the United States, but has many American relatives, I have tried long and hard to understand the “American Gun Culture”. In the United States today, I would think it’s futile to think that it’s possible to eliminate and/or prevent criminals and deranged individuals from acquiring guns. I think most law abiding Americans wish there were controlled restrictions in place considering the culture of violence and death ingrained in many local high populated societies. There are far too many easy resources to gun ownership both by legal process and the black market.
In reality Police Forces in the U.S. have become stretched to a point where their pooled resources are far more engaged as an investigative force rather than a crime prevention organization. In his book “More Guns, Less Crime”
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/More_Guns,_Less_Crime popular American economist John Lott has compiled extensive data initially to prove as ludicrous as it sounds that “More Gun Ownership actual equates to Less Crime.” In short the author found in studies that the higher the gun ownership amongst citizens, the less crimes per capita in certain cities.
Take Washington, D.C. for example. They presently have the strictest gun laws than anywhere in the American nation. Conversely however; Washington, D.C. also has the highest statistical rate of gun-related crimes anywhere on U.S. soil. Author John Lott also presents evidence that government enforced gun control laws simply don’t work.
A criminal is more likely to pick a crime that will meet the least amount of resistance and the risk of getting caught. It is also important to understand the history behind the so called U.S. gun culture.
Many U.S. citizens have used this term “Gun Culture” to describe their views against gun ownership. Every culture within society has a history which directly reflects the current state of that said society. In this case, in order to understand the preferences to “gun ownership”, we must delve into past history.
When one looks at the history of United States, we see a nation which was settled by individuals whose only means of survival and protection was from that of a gun. We see a nation that has won the right of freedom by war.
The United States, Second Amendment was penned and adopted on Dec. 15th, 1791 as a result of this freedom gained. Every generation since that event has taught their children and grandchildren of the price paid to be free today and to protect that right at all costs.
This mindset is very much ingrained in American culture to present day.
As for myself living outside the United States, I don’t profess to have all the answers to solving unending gun crimes. It’s obvious from a grave moral stance our societies are changing not only in America but all over the world. Essentially; we have completely lost fear and belief in God let alone Faith.
We live in a society today where it’s unacceptable to say Merry Christmas. And to think that United States aside from the rest of North America was settled by mostly Christian settlers.
Strange when one reads a popular circulated Facebook post that even made news in major global media on television and newspapers; a T-shirt that reads; Dear God, why do you allow so much violence in our schools? “Signed, Concerned Student”. I’m not allowed in schools. “Signed, God”. The problems in society today are much bigger than just inanimate material objects we see within the gun culture.
Has God turned a blind eye on us? Or is it that (“we”) in our societies and culture wars mixed with arrogance and flaunting egos have turned a blind eye on God?
