Nudity is immodest - why exactly?

From another thread, but i got this was the general opinion: apparently bikinis are immodest to wear while swimming, at least among US Catholics.

Why?

It’s an honest question, and I’m really curious.

I don’t see one’s stomach, back, legs, arms, shoulders, feet, and genitalia as sexually temtping in any way, so I really don’t understand how not wearing anything is more ‘immodest’ than a one-piece.

To be clear, I don’t think one-pieces are immodest either, as there is really nothing sexual about arms and legs and such…

Such is the nature of parody threads…

Feel free to debate this with me, though. I will use the LitCrit Method ™ until reality no longer makes sense.

To the OP–do you mean as in nudist communities, or like we should be able and allowed to walk around in public, nude? Or do you mean in private? :confused:

There’s nothing wrong with publicly showing bank statements and tax returns either. :whacky: But we don’t do we. It’s called personal and private.

Not to mention concupisence and cleanliness.

I would really recommend the book A RETURN TO MODESTY: Discovering the Lost Virtue by Wendy Shalit. She’s not Catholic, rather Jewish, but she does an amazing job of addressing modesty. She answers your question in her book.

Thank you so much, Jen. I’m blushing and have tears in my eyes, and don’t see what I did to warrant this, as I don’t recall being offensive to anyone here, but I’ll actually even answer this question honestly.

We live in a fallen world. Adam and Eve were naked before the fall, but after it felt compelled to cover their genitals (in all art that I’ve seen representing the scene at least).

Different cultures vary on what should be hidden from sight and on what causes sexual attraction, but genitals are covered in every culture. In mine, bikinis and speedos are the norm for the beach, but topless girls excite lust.

I would personally prefer to swim and sunbathe in the nude. I love the water and the sun on my skin. But because of the fall and because of the further restrictions that exist in my culture, I don’t.

I offer apologies to everyone I have apparently managed to offend with my questions. I won’t ask any more on this topic. 🤷

:confused: Pride? Maybe, but I haven’t seen that. Someone said they weren’t inspired to sin or near occassion there of by a certian style or lack of. That’s not pride. For that person, it simply is. I haven’t seen anyone say they are purposely trying to illicit such behaviors either.

**I think it’s a question of whether in one’s mind other’s WANT to see it then? Frankly any one who wants to can look at my bank statements or tax return if they ask nicely. Why they’d care to see them is beyond me. Lord knows they aren’t doing ME any good.🤷 **

I never read that there was anything wrong with nudity, even after the fall. Rather it was the perception of nakedness by Adam and Eve that was wrong. God even asked why they had covered themselves, implying that God didn’t think they should need to be covered? Just a thought. There’s nude statues all over the Vatican and in christian art.
Personally, I think the entire discussion has gotten rather puritanical. There is nothing wrong with spaggettii straps, imho, although I’d rather not show my flabby underarms.

I have read PLENTY about the wrongness of nudity. Of course we are talking about public nudity here. You ever hear about the near occasions of sin?

While I personally do believe total nudity is wrong after the fall (or I’d so be a nudist!), I agree with your reasoning. 🙂

Yeah, but if you were to see me or any of the male members of my family you would understand the powerful attraction and animal magnetism that make bathing suits a necessity. They save souls!!!

Did anyone fall for it?:rolleyes:
