Nun admits embezzling $850,000 from NY college
NEW YORK — A Catholic nun who ran a suburban New York City college’s finances has admitted to stealing more than $850,000 from the school.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Sister Marie Thornton, former Vice President of Finance for Iona College in New Rochelle, pleaded guilty to embezzlement in Manhattan federal court Wednesday.

Prosecutors say the 63-year-old nun submitted false invoices and had Iona pay her credit card bills. Iona reported the theft in 2009 but did not publicly identify a suspect.

Seems very strange for a nun to steal big time.

According to a news story from a couple months ago, she embezzled funds between 1999 and 2009. Apparently she had a gambling problem.

I think that is what we all hoped for, when the news first broke two years ago. However, the article in the first post of this thread states that she pleaded guilty to the charge.
 
This is no surprise–we’re all sinners, even those who make solemn vows. If a priest can molest a child, a nun can certainly steal.

It’s disgusting, yes, but surprising, no.

LOL. At least you warned us. That is seriously sad though, I have no personal knowledge of gambling addiction but I have heard it is harrowing.
