It first needs to be established that she was indeed attacked and killed for her faith. It looks that way, but we should wait until all the facts are in.

I agree, but in any case, she died forgiving them… something tells me that God gave her an abundance of grace that purified her of any sin or temporal punishment. She will be judged as she has judged others and if she was forgave her killers, I am sure the Father will forgive her of her small debts, but you are right we should be prudent and wait. In the meantime I don’t think it would her to pray for her and to her.

Witnesses said that her death was an execution. The attackers lay in wait and fired upon her, in her habit. So, she (and her bodyguard) were definitely the targets of the attack. The question is, was she targeted for her faith or for her race? An earlier article that I read had a quote from a Somalian who said that there are some people in the country just looking for an excuse to kill white people and that the death threat from their imam gave the killers the excuse.

I think the main point here is that she forgave her attackers. How many of us can say that we have truly forgiven those that have harmed us? Do we pray for those that have harmed us?

Her faith is something we need to pass on to others. Kindnesses passed on are a joy to God.

I think that you are right about this and it’s what John Paul II did for his attacker. This nun showed tremendous faith and humanity when confronted by an extreme act of cruelty. I pray that God will comfort her family and believe He embraces her.

I think there is more required to be a saint than martyrdom isn’t there?

I know there has to be miracles ascribed to the saint, or the saints intercession.

For saints in general, there must be proof that the candidate has exercised virtue to a heroic degree. Martyrdom certainly counts as heroic. If this can be proven then the cause can be opened, normally after a waiting period of five years unless waived.

For a candidate to be beatified (declared “blessed”), no miracle is necessary if the candidate is a martyr, but the job of the postulator is to prove that the martyrdom is genuine. For non-martyrs, one miracle attributed to the candidate’s intercession is required.

After beatification, one other miracle must be proven for canonization.

If ever Sr. Leonilla’s cause is opened, it will be the job of the postulator to prove that her death was one of martyrdom. If it can’t be proven, then a miracle will be required for her beatification.
