Outstanding. This is the kind of remedial and healing leadership that will help the Body of Christ.

In my humble opinion, I believe they are Bullying the Sisters. And I don’t think it’s right.

I’m w/ the Sisters. 😉

You must not have witnessed and experienced what many of us have during the past 30+ years. They are NOT being bullied, that’s for sure. They are being rescued from going over the edge (which some of them already have). Some of them promote outright heresy, pure and simple.

If they want to continue promoting these things, they cannot do it under the umbrella of the Catholic Church. Some of them have caused many to fall because of their example.
It is a very, very sad situation.

The Leadership Conference, based in Silver Spring, Md., released a statement about its upcoming meeting, saying it will “begin its discussion of the conclusions of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s doctrinal assessment and the implementation plan put forth by that Vatican office. … The conference plans to move slowly, not rushing to judgment.”
What’s to discuss? They either submit to doctrinal truth, which would bring unity to the Body of Christ, or not!

Just to be clear, just how far into the realm of non-catholic ideas and practices would a group have to before it became appropriate shepherding for the hierarchy to authoritatively intervene and have it not be “bullying?” Just asking.

Would promotion of Wiccan ideas and practices be enough?

Would the active attempts to morally legitimize homosexual relationships be enough?

Would the sponsoring of seminars on reincarnation and recovery of memories from previous lives be enough?

What WOULD be enough??

Have you even read the document? Or just the various biased articles/editorials that are out there?

If not, it’s linked at the top of this forum.

I agree, and I think it’s appropriate given the circumstances. On the other hand, reports such as this can be slanted pretty easily by focusing on extreme cases, so I’ll be interested in what the LCWR has to say in response.

My guess is that
  1. ]They’ll meet the Church halfway right off the bat, by acknowledging and agreeing with some of the key points made in the report (e.g. they accept the Trinity).]They’ll minimize the allegations in the report by stating that they are either exaggerated or simply don’t represent women religious in the US overall.]They’ll play up the fact that they’re hardworking and devoted Catholics who have made enormous contributions to the Church.]They’ll state that they are nonetheless willing to work with the Vatican’s delegate to help resolve the perceived problems.

Check back here in several days to see how I did.

Well, I seem to have misjudged their response with my 4-point prediction.

catholicnewsagency.com/news/lcwr-accuses-vatican-investigation-of-using-flawed-process/

I can’t find the actual text of their statement, but from press reports they don’t appear to have emphasized any common ground (1). They did minimize the accusations (2), and I’m sure they emphasized the value of women religious (3). And they are completely bypassing the Vatican delegate (4).

I think my approach would have been the sensible thing to do, but perhaps the leadership feels that would be an unpopular and too-accommodating move after having been blindsided, in their view, by the Vatican. While maybe not quite as gracious as they could have been, I don’t think they’ll really hurt their position much by appealing to the Vatican itself. The relevant Vatican officials are not looking to pick an unnecessary fight, so they’ll probably be sensitive and find a face-saving way for the LCWR to comply with the CDF’s instruction of a few weeks ago.

  1. How are they bulling the sisters when it is clear the LCWR are not following the Church’s teachings in many cases:
Cokie Roberts, who was a keynote speaker LCWR assembly, 'described Pope Benedict XVI as “really lacking in the theological virtue of charity,” and who has called pro-lifers “extremists”-- is a critic of Catholic teaching on embryonic stem-cell research. Appearing on ABC-TV in 2007, Mrs. Roberts said that she found the federal law against partial-birth abortion “offensive as a woman.”

The keynote speaker for the 2012 LCWR assembly is trying to spread new age transhumanism which is heretical:

    patheos.com/blogs/godandthemachine/2012/04/exhibit-a-for-explaining-the-lcwr-report

Read about some of the radical people within the LCWR; supporting ordination of women to the priesthood, gay ‘marriage,’ abortion, sterilization of women etc:

    wdtprs.com/blog/2012/04/nuns-gone-wild-a-trip-down-memory-lane

How the LCWR has gone off the rails:
Superiors therefore are asked in the visitation questionnaire to report on how often the Eucharist is celebrated in the order’s facilities, if sisters are encouraged to attend daily Mass, whether liturgical norms are followed, if rituals replace the Church’s liturgical practices, whether sisters give “reflections” in place of the priest’s homily, whether priests at community gatherings are encouraged to concelebrate, whether sisters pray the official Liturgy of the Hours, and if the sacraments are made available to the sick and elderly.
These are not idle questions dreamed up by some Vatican bureaucrat. Each is based on real-life experiences of sisters known to this writer. For example, a sister whose motherhouse is in New York reports that the elderly in her order are dispersed in secular nursing homes where access to the sacraments is limited. Many sisters say that it is common in their religious orders for sisters chosen by leadership to give a“reflection” in place of the homily. And they say that strange rituals often replace observances of the Church’s liturgical practices.
Sister Elizabeth McDonough, OP wrote in Review for Religious in 1992 what sisters in dozens of communities have told her: “They are repulsed by rituals that center on shells and stones, streams and twigs, windmills and waterfalls, and at which so fundamental a Christian symbol as the cross of Jesus Christ is often noticeable only by its absence.” And it is obvious this trend continues today, as anyone can see by looking at photos on the web pages of a variety of women’s orders, as well as photos from LCWR assemblies that are posted on www.lcwr.org.
Even the doxology prayed in many of the women’s orders has been debased and neutered, with “Father” being replaced with “Source of all being,” and “Son” replaced with “Eternal word.” Liturgical books also have been corrupted, with many women’s orders replacing the Church’s Liturgy of the Hours with an inclusive-language, feminist version of the daily office. And routinely it is made quite clear to priests that they are not welcome to concelebrate at convent liturgies because the sight of multiple priests is upsetting or offensive to sisters who support the ordination of women.

How are they bulling the sisters
They are trying to strong-arm the group into backing away from its apparent convictions.

Your points address whether the actions are justified, not whether it can be characterized as bullying. I already said it is probably appropriate.

I saw this on TV and I was really surprised since we are talking of the majority of nuns. I hope they do cooperate with the US Bishops and Rome.

Actually they are not talking about the majority of nuns (or even the majority of sisters:p). They are talking about one of the leadership conferences in the US and the leaders of the congregations who are active member of it.

Maybe the Vatican should offer each offending nun $20,000 to leave their order.

Tonight at Mass I exchanged the sign of peace with an elderly man proudly wearing a large button that said “I Support the Sisters” Then I realized there were several people brazenly wearing these buttons. I live in Seattle—go figure.

So I’ve decided to make one that says “I Support the Sisters that tow the company line.”

The “bullying” argument is a red herring. The LCWR knew this investigation was going to happen almost ten years age, and they attempted to stonewall the Vatican from the get-go. The Vatican waited ten years (I’d call that fairly patient) for the LCWR to take the matter upon themselves and show some good will by making or recommending at least incremental changes, but the LCWR carried on with its sick feminist/New Age/womynpriest agenda. And what’s more, the LCWR stacked the deck with members who, in the past, would not have been part of their conference. Originally, the only members of LCWR were heads of various orders; but soon, exceptions were made, and all of sudden, the liberal bloc added so many of their own associates to the ranks, nuns who remained obedient to their mission from Rome formed their own, albeit much smaller, conference.

These nuns deserve no sympathy. They are a cancer to the Church. They have invited in and promoted pagan worship, liturgical abuse, dissent, and outright heresy to three consecutive generations of disappearing Catholics.

That they do not humbly submit to this investigation is proof of their duplicity and shines a light on who their real master is.

This is probably not too surprising, especially to find such support among the elderly (like the 80 year old nun who supports abortion.)

The years immediately following Vatican II somehow generated a large group of Catholics who went off the deep end. Not to be disrespectful but I think of this particular Catholic cohort as similar to aging hippies (of which I know a few.) They thought that the Church was going to do a 180 and go off in a sort of new age direction, but it didn’t. Now they are disappointed that the Church didn’t change in the way they thought, or hoped, it would.

We have a lot of young sisters in this diocese who are faith filled and orthodox and do not carry any of that baggage. These aging unorthodox Catholics are a dying breed. Unfortunately the LCWR leadership contains some of them.
