Nuns misappropriated $500K in school funds, spending some on gambling: Church

Personally I am at a complete loss as to how the diocese decided not to press charges. They essentially said, “We gave the sisters a really stern talking to! And they said they were very sorry, so all is forgiven.” Are you kidding me? They stole half a million dollars and would have continued to steal more if someone did not try to find one particular check that they just happened to steal. They should absolutely be charged with embezzlement and thrown out of whatever group of sisters they belong to. If I was a parent of a child at that school I would be furious. Seriously, what is the reasoning here?

The highest estimate of financial settlements for sexual abuse in the U.S. so far that I have heard is $3.9 billion. Throw in things like this incident. The bishop we had here for five years took at least 3 international trips – pilgrimages, funded by the participants. The Church is just awash with money. What they’re doing with the money is mostly living a lifestyle far, far above my means. I give alms directly to the poor, but I don’t feel obligated to support this mega-church, which has produced all these scandals. They don’t seem to deserve the money that they can’t manage.

Now watch Hollywood make a movie about these two Sisters and what they did with the money and they would make it a comedy without any concern about the hardworking parents making their offerings.

I think it’s hard for any priest or bishop or diocesan personnel to look at an elderly nun and just cast her off to the public prosecutor without a safety line no matter what she’s done.

I agree that this case shouldn’t be handled any differently than if a lay person did the same thing, but I think that’s a tough impulse for some to overcome—for better or worse.

(warning : heavy sarcasm ahead)

Sure you really need to enlighten yourself from the old traditional church values.

The modern redefinition of stealing is now simply ‘redirecting funds’.

And surely the nuns know the best way to spend your money, just like the government.

(sarcasm ended).

I completely agree with you.

and I am sick of hearing this ‘who am I to judge’ cowardice and false compassion from the church.
