A group of nuns is suing to shut down a strip club next to their convent in Stone Park that the sisters say keeps them awake at night.
The Missionary Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo Scalabrinians say in the suit that Club Allure has ruined their peace with blinking neon lights and loud thumping music. The nuns say they have witnessed drunken fights and found condoms littering the area.

I gotta ask: How does a municipality get zoned for adult entertainment? Why don’t we just start zoning for ‘School-Free Drug Zones” or “High Crime Areas”? Nonsense. Anyway, they didn’t say who was there first. If the area was zoned that way before the good sisters moved in, that could blow their case. The lawyer for the club is really grasping at straws though. If you “soundproof” a place, that won’t stop the stuff that’s going on in their parking lot, which is most likely illegal. If the sisters lose their case, I suggest they start taking donations to build one of those enormous walls to protect residential areas from freeway noise, etc. On the side facing the strip joint, they post religious material like passages from Scripture warning about sin. I’d donate. 😃

Put the strip club somewhere else- should be out-of-the-way. I wish we didn’t have these places at all but I guess it’s the US so. . . .

Here is what the PM of Iceland said about strip clubs- which have been outlawed in Iceland.

“The Nordic countries are leading the way on women’s equality, recognizing women as equal citizens rather than commodities for sale.”

Oh, why did they sue?

Stand three nuns outside:

One with a clipboard appearing to take names

One with a camera appearing to take pictures

One with a large inspirational picture of the Blessed Mother

(Or one brandishing a ruler and a giving a severe look).

The sisters have been in their location for several decades. The strip club is new. In fact, if you look at Bing Maps, you can see the warehouse building which was there before the strip club was built.

The entrance to the club’s parking lot is located on Lake St. This is mixed commercial/industrial street, although the area immediately to the north is residential The strip club is located a half-block north of Lake St., and is basically in the middle of the residential area.

Here is a map. The green rectangles highlight the property of the sisters. The red rectangle is the strip club. Notice all of the houses to the right and left of the club.
(I couldn’t fit Lake Street into the picture, but it runs parallel to the the bottom of the map.)

A lot of countries have strip clubs and worse, brothels for example, so don’t act like this is just a US thing.

About women’s equality… you do know there are male strip clubs too right?

Are you suggesting that women who chose to strip are not equal citizens and are just “commodities” for sale? I"m sure they don’t think that way. If anyone is a commodity it is the men who waste their money at a strip club.

Another thing, since you’re for equal rights, why should the strip club be put out of the way? They are a business, would you treat other businesses that way? What if the city made the convent move and be put out of the way.

In many cases, yes. Although not all women who work such places are trafficked, many are. Similarly, legal brothels have not ended the practice of forced prostitution. Rather, such businesses provide legal cover for it.

Do you have any evidence that, in the US, “many” of the women who strip are trafficked?

It’s certainly not an American thing- you are very correct.

I would approve of shutting down male and female strip clubs.

I don’t worship the “free market”. I believe that businesses which make profits off of sin and the degradation of society have no place in it.

I am no libertarian.

What other business rely solely on sin and debasement to make the almighty $$? Casinos don’t as gambling is not a sin in and of itself. Same with liquor stores.

With strip clubs it is only sin which drives them.

Yes, they have degraded themselves to commoditization. The fact that there is a demand for this is shameful in itself, but the fact that the demand is filled by women who often feel they have no choice is even sadder. These women lack self-esteem, self-determination, and the morals necessary to hold up their heads and do the right thing. All men are created equal, but sin introduces inequalities that strip human beings of their dignity.

That is your opinion. Do you have any evidence that women who chose to strip have no choice in the matter or that they lack self-esteem and self-determination? Has a laborer who sells has labor “degraded” himself to commidizaiton?

What justification is there for shutting down strip clubs in a free and just society? Just because you disagree with what they do?

I don’t know why you keep saying you are not a libertarian. Neither am I. What does that have to do with what we are talking about?

I don’t worship the free market either but I don’t see any justification for a government shutting down strip clubs in a free and just society just because some people disagree with what they do.

Do you think hospitals that perform abortions and prescribe birth control should be shut down?

What about bookstores that sell “satanic” and “new age” books?

Not just because I disagree with it, but because they are morally depraved businesses that denigrate women. Any place that promotes a grave evil should be closed down.

Yes.

Yes. You can add any place that sells pornography as well. I am a Catholic first and foremost, and that takes precedence over any “freedoms” that a government allows.

I never thought I’d see someone on CAF promoting the building of strip clubs next to convents, but I guess there’s always a first time for everything.

Sounds good to me. For the meantime, I will try to keep my fingers crossed on what happens next. personally, a follow up article in the near future would be great.

What you are supporting is theocracy. I never thought I’d see someone on CAF supporting theocracy but I guess there is always a first time for everything.

Hey, where can I find a male strip club?:D:

You do understand that “free” and “just” become incompatible when one or the other is pushed to the extreme, do you not?

A society which is totally “free” will infringe on the just treatment of some. A society which is absolutely just will deprive all citizens of at least some freedom.

So you don’t think the omniscient, omnipotent and omnibenevolent Creator of all that exists would be a good candidate for leading a country?

I’d be interested in the logic by which you would justify any alternative.

Certainly election by lowest common denominator (appeal to mediocrity) must have some hidden appeal that you will point out.
