No, never got that one. I am just told that what we do isn’t in the bible (which sets me up quite nicely as I begin to point out where our beliefs come from* in the bible*, LOL!).
A Catholic friend of mine calls non-Catholic bibles the Readers Digest versions.Indeed, and usually from the “The KJV is the only REAL bible!” Crowd.
I guess I’m not as familiar with my Bible as I ought to be… I’m having a bit of trouble finding the verses that talk about Wednesday night church meetings and altar callsI am just told that what we do isn’t in the bible (which sets me up quite nicely as I begin to point out where our beliefs come from* in the bible*, LOL!).
… and all the Spanish speakers are out of luck, as well as those who spoke Biblical Greek and Aramaic (not to mention those of us who don’t speak Elizabethan English)?Indeed, and usually from the “The KJV is the only REAL bible!” Crowd.
There are over 30,000 denomination because each “non-denominational” church is it’s own denomination.Yeah, that figure has been debunked several times, by both Catholic and Protestant apologists. It comes from the World Christian Encyclopedia, which uses a weird method to come to that number. That same source says there are over two hundred different Catholic denominations, which is just obviously false.
I do wish Catholics would stop citing that number. It weakens our argument and distracts from the main issue.
Seems kind of like an oxymoron to say that however. If something is “non-denominational” then it by definition can’t be a denomination. There are over 30,000 denomination because each “non-denominational” church is it’s own denomination.
Every time some person founds a “non-denominational” community, a new denomination is formed.
I usually get “Catholics added books to the bible”. This, of course, is not true but seems to be taught to protestants.Does anyone else get the “your Bible is edited” line?
No, it is because the statisticians who came up with the number counts every national Church (for example every national hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church) as a single Church, and sometimes every diocese as one Church, thus dividing the Roman Catholic Church into over 200 different churches. Some coutries, often because of state funding of various religious and non-religious* groups, count each of the dioceses as separate denominations. In Norway, for instance, the two Roman Catholic dioceses are juridically classified as two denominations. There are over 30,000 denomination because each “non-denominational” church is it’s own denomination.
The above post was from June 19, 2012 (#107 on this thread)My girlfriend is Protestant… and I think all of these things are “nutty.”
I think those are all pretty astonishing.
- Your Church thinks it’s bigger than God, and Jesus.
- You are praying to statues.
- Why pray to Mary? She’s dead.
- Jesus loves EVERYONE. He even let that whore wash his feet, and I can’t receive Communion???
- The Vatican is it’s own country? That doesn’t help your case at all.
AWESOME!!! Praise be to God!The above post was from June 19, 2012 (#107 on this thread)
The Protestant girlfriend I was talking about is now a Catholic and my wife. She entered the Church at the Easter Vigil in 2013, and is a cantor at our parish!
A couple months after I posted this in June, we had a HUGE argument about the Real Presence. It was nasty. That very Sunday, the Gospel reading from John Chapter 6 (20th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B) and the priest’s homily made her rethink the “Real Presence”… especially since only a few days earlier we were “discussing” it.
RCIA followed, and with the help of the most knowledgeable priest I have ever met, she “came home”. That paved the way for us to be married and we’ve been VERY happy ever sinceShe’s VERY happy as a Catholic!
This is one of my all-time favorite threads on this (or any other) forum.
No offense Joseph, but some of your views you’ve expressed on CAF on Catholic government could actually be legitimately compared to any Theocracy including Daesh.Someone on NationStates compared me to ISIS because I hold Catholic views on government.
Which views are those? No offense Joseph, but some of your views you’ve expressed on CAF on Catholic government could actually be legitimately compared to any Theocracy including Daesh.![]()
