This made me look a bit into the subject.

We could also mention Descartes, Pascal, Pasteur, Lavoisier, Galilei… 😃

My girlfriend, who is “non-denominational” asked me recently if a a priest I had spoken to believes in the Holy Spirit. I felt a mixture of shock, humor, and confusion.

My best friend became a Christian about a year ago.

He believes that the Catholic Church is Mystery Babylon.
That any three-dimensional image of a living thing is an idol even if nobody actually treats it as such.
He complains to me that I kneel to the crucifix in Church, which to him means I’m kneeling to a false god.
He thinks the Virgin Mary is the pagan goddess Semiramis.
He thinks by observing the Lord’s Day I offend God.

…What hurts is that he’s honestly convinced I’m in danger of damnation unless I turn away from the Church, so he keeps preaching to me, trying to save my soul.

Mamma Mia!! Reepicheep! What an incredible opportunity to explain to him about the real meaning of one true Faith.

I will pray for a conversion of your friend’s heart! 🙂

You bow to the Crucifix, kneel to the Tabernacle. Just by the way 😛

I wonder if he happened to read the same novel I did. A Catholic character genuflected to the crucifix. I wrote to the author to explain that Catholics don’t do that. She wrote back saying she really didn’t care. 😦

Just what “flavor” of Christian does he profess to be?
I think he’s grown his own flavor. :whacky: I think at one point he was a Seventh-Day Adventist; but he’s gone well past that now. 😦

Thank you for your prayers. I have almost never been able to change my friend’s mind about anything by explanation or persuasion. :banghead:

Thank you. Yes, you’re right. Not that Jamie would care: he’d just say bowing to the crucifix is wrong also. :banghead:

And what did you reply?

The best answer would be something like this: "Of course he believes in the Holy Spirit; after all, it is the Catholic Church which revealed and taught the truth of the existence of the Holy Spirit.

Does YOUR pastor believe in the Holy Spirit?"

Actually, biblically, the day begins at sunset. That is why, for Jews, the Sabbath begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sundown on Saturday. That is also the reason why, for Christians, the Lord’s Day begins at sundown on Saturday. Hence the vigil mass on Saturday evening fulfills the Sunday obligation.

Paul (formerly LDS, now happily Catholic)
Catholic Answers says differently. I tried to find an answer in the catechism directly, but I don’t have a hard copy nearby, and the internet search isn’t working well. 🤷

Sorry, PaulDupre1. I went to talk to someone about learning to pray the Liturgy of the Hours; they said that the prayer for Sunday and other feasts or memorials always begins with evening prayer on it’s vigil, in keeping with the Jewish tradition.

Hi! I have to say, reading this thread makes me giggle! I was raised hard core southern baptist, where no religion but that religion is the right religion, I of course do not share this belief. My mother and grandmother brothers and sisters and daddy and pretty much everyone I know thinks that Catholics are not living and worshipping in the right way. I have had a very strong pull to the Catholic faith for a very long time, and just recently I have begun to research and incorporate some of the teachings into my daily life, I told my mother about this just this past Sunday and I thought she was going to have a fit. 😉 I just let her rant and came back with the fact that how can she judge a religion that is based on Jesus Christ and call HERSELF a christian. She kinda stopped talking after that…I find that a lot of people that are against catholics have no understandings what so ever of anything that goes on in this religion, and I have no idea on earth why people would consider this religion not a christian one. It really makes my head spin, if they would just take the time to actually study what this religion is about instead of making assumption based of ******** they might be able to see that what they thought all this time was extremely wrong!

Welcome to the forums, Kelly. You wouldn’t be related to a Kate Middleton, would you? 😉

Sounds to me like he’s a new Christian who has joined a fundamentalist group. In time, he’ll probably move away from them and learn a few truths instead of the lies and rubbish they’re obviously feeding him.

Give him time.

Thanks for the welcome! I wish I was related to Kate Middleton!! How nice that would be!! 🙂

…Perhaps. But he’s come up with a new one in the past couple of days.
Before Creation God contained within Himself all possible things, which includes Evil. He created the universe in order to destroy Evil, by nailing it to the Cross with Jesus.

Proof? The opening passage of Genesis. “And darkness hovered upon the face of the deep”. He insists the darkness being described is that of evil. Bearing in mind that he’s a Young-Earth Creationist, that stands as proof to him that darkness/evil was part of Creation.

Here in India, the Hindu extremists say that in church, Wine is supplied and it should be considered similar to bar.

I still wouldn’t worry too much. I know it’s trying for you as he’s your friend, and this sort of stuff would get a bit wearing after a while, but I think you’ll find that sooner or later he’s going to grow out of this ridiculous stage, and start looking for TRUTH.

If you’re still friends by that time, you’ll then be able to supply some of the answers.

I’m not totally unsympathetic to a young earth origin myself, but I never had that particular belief.

Personally I think he’s a VERY new Christian, and trying to make sense of the Bible and Christianity, but I get the impression he’s relying on his own ideas, and seems disinclined to even consider serious scholarship.

Darkness could be a kind of evil. What sort of “evil” though? Does he mean the evil of ignorance, or of sin, or of natural physical suffering and death (which is an evil for me but good for the bugs because they want to eat me and raise happy bug families)?

I think he could find better scriptural passages than Genesis. “If there is evil in the city, have I not done it?” (Amos 3:6), “I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.” (Isaiah 45:7)…not that God makes sin, or that evil is a thing rather than a deficit of good, and I’m assuming that “evil” in these passages refers to war and destruction, but war and destruction usually involve moral evils too…

Too early to think. 🤷

Is he afraid to enter a museum and see a lot of statues; does he refrain from visiting the Lincoln Memorial; does he ever attend 3D movies? Does he hate it if kids make heads out of play-dough or build sand castles or play with dolls?

I wonder why 3D representations are evil but 2D representations get a pass.
