New York’s Archbishop Timothy Dolan has warned that allowing same-sex marriage in the state could lead to a further redefinition that accepts multiple partners and infidelity, Catholic News Agency reports.

We’re already there in Canada. It would surprise me if the current review of polygamy going on in the BC Supreme Court reached any other decision than striking down the law, because they simply don’t have a legal argument left to stand on thanks to the legalization of gay “marriage”.

Perhaps the faster this house of cards comes tumbling down the better…

So other than Jacob from the OT who else had multiple wives and when did it become taboo?

Didn’t Solomon have 700 wives? And King David repented of polygamy. I believe Abraham had two wives and Jacob had four? Gosh, my Old Testament knowledge is getting rusty.

But Exodus speaks of Jewish concubines, and the prophet Samuel condemns the Jewish king for having “too many” wives. Deuteronomy also warns that the king must not have “too many” wives.

Yes, there was polygamy in the OT. It seems to have been more supported during times of drought and famine.

I kind of don’t get how it’s not legal already considering it’s part of the Muslim faith, and it’s part of some sects of LDS. So what happens when a muslim immigrates from a muslim country, bringing his three wives with him, and their family? Is only the first one recognized legally in the US, or elsewhere, maybe England or Canada? What happens to the second and third wives and their children? And consider the sect of mormons that believes that polygamy is part of the command to increase and multiply, who do not have the right yet to practice their religion, and by that I mean consenting adults. So…while the Church is fighting the legalization of same sex marriage on the basis of Catholic teachings, and some Catholics are making noise about their rights as Catholics being taken away because other people are engaging in activities not sanctioned by the Church, it’s not okay for those of other religions to practice their faiths as well. Apparently not too many see the irony.

In the US, I think the common practice is for one wife to be recognized as legal, and the “sister wives” to be not legally recognized. Those marriages exist only in their religious and social form.

Legally, in the US that isn’t possible. Such immigrants have to find a way to dodge the law.
No one knows how prevalent polygamy is in New York. Those who practice it have cause to keep it secret: under immigration law, polygamy is grounds for exclusion from the United States.
Under state law, bigamy can be punished by up to four years in prison,
No agency is known to collect data on polygamous unions, which typically take shape over time and under the radar, often with religious ceremonies overseas and a visitor’s visa for the wife, arranged by other relatives. Some men have one wife in the United States and others abroad.

Could this be a result of lack of knowledge from Catholics for so many years?

i don’t buy the slippery slope argument at all. The difference between homosexuality and polygamy is that one chooses to be a polygamist, no one has control over whether they are gay or not.

But the arguments offered to change the law had to do with marriage as a right, not an inclination. Rights are exercised by choice. Not all homosexuals choose to “marry” someone of their gender. (some polls show that homosexuals actually prefer a civil union arrangement over marriage) But those that “marry” do so because they are choosing to exercise the privalege of marriage. Someone who wants a second (or third, fourth) wife or husband is doing so becasue he or she is choosing to exercise the privalege of marriage.

It’s no longer a slippery slope argument. It’s more of an equity argument.

Incorrect. Some people are born with a deep attraction for multiple partners. To be happy, they must be able to freely enter into marriage too.

This is a spurious argument. We are looking at an exercise of rights and not personal inclinations. As a heterosexual male, therefore, can I not demand multiple female partners?

Well, the preferable term for that person would be that they are a “player” (if you know what I mean). That’s not actually a good thing.

This is an interesting question. Although there is mixed data regarding the genetic predisposition to homosexuality, there is voluminous data about men being hard-wired to have multiple partners. 😃 Those people talking about “gay” giraffes and penquins would have to support the many examples of polygamy in nature.

Not at all. They can’t help that they are attracted to multiple people and can only really be happy marrying 2 or more others. They’re born that way, so we can’t discriminate. People want to cherry pick the “I’m born this way” argument, but it doesn’t make any sense.

Why does almost everyone assume that polygamy only means multiple wives?? What happens when one of these multiple wives decides she might want multiple husbands?(duh).Just see how the male supporters of polygamy change their tune when one of their favorite “wives” decides to take a lover that’s when the doo doo hits the fan

You’d be surprised actually. The Headmaster of the Grey School of Wizardry is in many such relationships…

I believe polygyny actually means multiple wives. Polyandry is more than one husband.

You are correct that polygamy can include both. And then there’s the combo, called polyamory. (group marriage - multiple wives and husbands)

Anthropologically, polygamy makes more sense. It is important in terms of identifying the genetic parents of the children. But legally, in the re-definition of marriage realm, there is no practical difference. 🙂

I’ve been arguing for a long time that if gay marriage is permitted, other types of marriage must be allowed. There is no accepted historic precedent for gay marriage, whereas there is plenty for other types of marriage, such as polygamy. Approving gay marriage and not other types is clearly discriminatory.

Another issue is that now that marriage has moved away from religious and natural law, there is no justification against the other types of marriage…none.
