A Staten Island Roman Catholic Church’s board whose members include Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan backed out of a plan to sell a vacant convent to a Muslim organization on Thursday.

–ha ha. it’s about time we stop pretending absolute religious freedom is a good thing.
There are numerous considerations that are taken into account in a real estate transaction.
Please do not be so hasty to draw conclusions in this way.

And, I am glad that you are not pretending to hide your personal worldview. You are fortunate you have the freedom to express such thoughts, no matter how offensive they may be.

From my understanding, an individual that has become a naturalized citizen is only unable to run for the President of the United States or Vice-President. All other offices are certainly open to that particular individual.
So, what you’re saying is analogues to saying that they can use the public washroom, but the “white’s only” one is for white’s only? Yes, that comparison was deliberate. It doesn’t seem fair to say that they are barred from the highest offices in the land by virtue of their birth, but can be say the Chief Justice of SCOTUS. It seems to be the last holdover from America’s isolationist days.

Now now. Let’s not be so quick to judge another country from a view gained on a forum.
I too have wondered long and hard about some things I see happening in yours. Yet, I do not live there or have a full grasp of the situation to make the comment out loud. Not that I do about anything else really. But, you must realize that some of us have veterans in our families and take great offense to someone who does not live here to disparage us in any way shape or form. It’s easier to take from a fellow american, and it’s just not good manners to share opinions you hold the way you are doing it.

what happened to these forums? i use to be with like minded folks. it seems the politically correct effeminate church is alive and well.

I’m sure there are many like minded folks as yourself here. Just in case you were wondering, I am Agnostic. So, fear not! Keep the opinions rolling, and I am sure you will find company that will join in and agree with you soon enough.

Following the Gospel is the only requirement for Catholics, who need to be of a like-mind with Jesus Christ rather than with talk radio hosts. A person cannot serve two masters, one of which likes to throw out the words “effeminate” and “politically correct.” Politics and hormones can have no place in furthering justice.

Condemning whole groups of people is a sin against justice. Maybe there are other forums out there who champion and celebrate the injustice of tribal justice, but these Catholic forums are not it. Good luck with your search for “like-minded” people.

are you kidding me? who are you people? where are the catholics? isn’t there a nice episcopalian forum you can go to.

i think we shouldn’t allow most muslims into our country. i see no reason to think that they will intergrate effectively and abandon hopes of sharia law and their sympathies to violence. i think 9-11 is reason enough to not let them in.
But can’t we say the same thing about the person who killed “Dr.” Tiller or bomb abortion clinics? Couldn’t they be described as terrorists?

Or God forbid, a Christian tea party member does something radical and the tea party (which is mostly Christian) and Christians will be bashed and labeled as terrorists by this administration. And then, hey, no Christians come here.

I don’t mean to equate killing a serial abortionist to killing millions of innocent people on 9-11, but I have heard people make the above argument…and we have to admit, the person who killed Tiller and bomb abortion clinics are WRONG.

I like to think of most Muslims as peaceful and moderate, but I don’t know any or know much of their religion.

and if we are worried about sharia law, ban burkas!

I agree. My biggest fear is that a tea part member does something radical and stupid and then all of us tea party-ers are demonized and called terrorists or whatever Janet Napolitano calls them.

if the muslims just blew up abortion clinics, i’d welcome them in.

“you people” - more tribal justice, I see.

I for one an a person who likes talk radio, but when it comes to forming my opinions about people and whole religions I use the Gospels and the catechism rather than talk radio hosts. Read your catechism and see if the Catholic Church isn’t ‘kidding’ you, too.

“I’ve sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn’t want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.”–Judge Smails
Dee Dee King: Speaking of crass Hollywood jokes and snickers about the culture of death, apparently the Mullahs in Iran honor Judge Smails’ caricatured policy, as they are the world’s leader in juvenile executions.

Ignoring Dee Dee kings nativism(which I find highly offensive since I have Irish and Catholic ancestors and neither were welcome in this country not too long ago) and getting back to the news article.

Should a catholic church sell unused property to a muslim group? my vote is no, because i feel that church property should be sold to an appropriate buyer as deemed by the local bishop. Personally, i’d prefer that the property go to another christian denomination or maybe sold to a non-religious group.

Threads like this make me wonder how many Catholics actually live more to the left, than to the right. Curious…

Curious whether you view the prejudicial and wholesale condemnation of Muslims as a left and right issue, rather than a catechised and non-catechised issue.

I think my answer does stem from personal feelings. I mean, I have a hard enough time imagining another christian denomination using a catholic building. And then, on the other hand, would Muslims be comfortable in this day and age with Catholics taking over a mosque? Would we as Catholics in this modern time be comfortable with that action? And if you’re implying I’m a liberal, that’s hilarious because I couldn’t be further from the left. Conservative Republican Nebraskan all the way!

Heck, I invite anyone to judge Canada all they want. What you’ll find is most of it is related to political philosophy. But who can be President? Ok, I admit that it’s a bit of an internal thing, but it’s not like the US is like Lebanon (they have a truly bizarre system of assigning certain positions to certain religious groups, which was probably some sort of compromise) or something. There was no reason to arbitrarily choose to allow anyone to be elected to congress but restrict the president to a “natural born American” besides either pride, isolationism, or xenophobia.

Can someone restore my faith in humanity and please tell me that this is not a commonly held American view?

Okay, really, to accuse the United States of pride, isolationism, and xenophobia because they refuse to allow a naturalized citizen to run for president? A little extreme don’t you think, especially since you think that dee dee king’s horrific statements cover all Americans? By the way, they don’t, just in case you really cared.

But on the topic of naturalized citizens. While they may love American and all she represents, they are still going to have strong ties to their homeland, especially if they moved here later in life. It can’t be helped; our homelands do shape our life. They might feel indebted to their homeland or feel the need to help their homeland more because they have family there or other feelings of gratitude to the land they were born and raised in. I know if I moved to another country, I would still love America more because it’s my homeland. It’s where my family lives. It’s a complicated requirement, one that shouldn’t be brushed aside as mere xenophobia.

That seems fairly weak. You should exclude them on the slight chance that they maybe sort of kind of still like their homeland a little? That is the definition of xenophobia. You reject them because “they’re not like us” or because you’re afraid of who they might be.

Look at how it’s working in other countries. Our Governor General is a Haitian born immigrant. That only helped us to focus better on Haiti during the earthquake aftermath. It made the tragedy more real for us instead of just a news item of some far away land. Having an immigrant as President could give America a broader world view, which to be perfectly frank most Americans seem to lack.

I think of 300,000,000 citizens of the USA, I would guess 90% have no clue. By the time they do get a clue, there is every chance it will be too late to do any good.
