NY Times: Is Anti-Catholicism Dead? Tolerance has co-existed uneasily with prejudice

In the article, Father Neuhaus makes an important point, that today, the only good Catholic is a bad Catholic.

Tolerance has become a one-way street. It no longer has universal application. It is simply another way of saying, I’m right, you’re wrong.

The NY Times has drifted more and more into the secular fold.

God bless,
Ed

Not really depressing in my eyes. I see those anti comments all the time here on the internet and its just more expected than anything else.

I read half the comments. While not free from anti-Catholic sentiments, they aren’t nearly as insulting or belligerent as the comments made after many political articles I’ve seen.

I dunno… I largely regard anonymous online comments as a waste of time. CAF has its problems, but at least you get a sense of who the regulars are, and where they are coming from.

I typically avoid them because my blood pressure medicine doesn’t work THAT well.

But I do find they give a pretty accurate picture of what people, outside of the CAF box, really think. And that is what I find depressing.

BTW: Many of the comments were not anonymous. First and last names were provided.

The whole article is incredibly ironic considering the news about the desecration of the Eucharist by a zebrafish expert in Minnesota. How much more anti-Catholic can you be? It’s never good journalism to ignore dimensions of the story. I would strongly recommend to this author and to any here Dr. Philip Jenkins’ excellent book “The New Anti-Catholicism: The Last Acceptable Prejudice.”

It is from Jenkins (a non-Catholic) that Neuhaus seems to be quoting in this article, particularly that of the anti-immigrant sentiment. Jenkins makes many excellent points about the changing face of anti-Catholicism, which now comes from liberals now, whereas in the early 20th century it came from racist Protestants who didn’t like the Irish or the Italians.

I find it quite depressing as well. Comments in articles like that are like a trainwreck - I know I shouldn’t look, but I do anyway. The stereotypes and deliberate misunderstandings run rampant. We get bombardments from the left and the right. I suppose that comes with the territory when our Church is a sign of contradiction in this world.

Take comfort. Jesus predicted that this would happen.

“But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”
—Luke 6:27-28

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.”
—Matt 5:11

Yes, a little bit of a downer, and what I find even more of a downer is the Catholic hate I have found the last couple of weeks in researching the 2 incidents of Eucharistic Desecration. Not only from The “Good Professors” blog but from many many more websites that basically would rather see us dead than look at us. It was a shocking eye opener for me. I kind of compare my reaction to 9/11 when I was shocked that muslim fundamentalist radicals in various countries hated us so much they flew planes into our buildings:eek: …not QUITE to that extent but a shocker none the less. So this article pretty much hit the nail on the head. The focus has changed, however, from Protestant bias to far left wing…that I would also agree with 100%.
