I remember the wondrful cardinals that the NY Archdiocese had before Cardinal Egan. We had cardinal O’Connor and Cardinal Cook. Cardinal O’Connor created controversy by openly criticizing all of the Pro-Choice Catholics such as Guiliani, Clinton, Cuomo and Pataki. Now we have a do nothing Cardinal who defends crooks and who has covered up for child molesting priests. I used to be proud of our Cardinal. Now he is just shameful.

From what I hear Cardinals Cook and O’Connor were exceptional bishops, priests and men in general. I am certain both will one day be entered into the book blesseds and soon after canonized. I know for a fact Cardinal Cook’s case for beatification is in the works.

I don’t know if I would cast Cardinal Egan as a pedophile protector since I have no proof, but I wouldn’t rule out such allegations. Though I have to say he strikes as one of your run-of-the-mill administrator type of archbishops, who runs the archdiocese as though it were a corporation and less the mystical body of Christ.

Just my 2 cents :twocents:

yup correct. A good example of this is found in the Catholic Answers e-letter dated April 2004, I think April 21 or 24?? “A Priest With Principle.” All will enjoy reading.

A south Philly boy by birth, Cardinal O’Connor nonetheless had the heart of a New Yorker. Accordingly, the city loved him! I miss him.

By the way, his date of birth is 1932 meaning he turns 75 in 2007, an age they all MUST subbit thiir resignation to the POPE, hopefully with this one, the POPE WILL accept his resignation.

And not only that he is appointed by the Pope. So if Cardinal Egan is not a real Cardinal he must not have been appointed by a real Pope. For only real popes appoint real cardinals. So therefore if you contend that Cardinal Egan is unreal then…

From the Catechism:

2477
Respect for the reputation of persons forbids every attitude and word likely to cause them unjust injury.278 He becomes guilty:

of rash judgment who, even tacitly, assumes as true, without sufficient foundation, the moral fault of a neighbor;

of detraction who, without objectively valid reason, discloses another’s faults and failings to persons who did not know them;279

of calumny who, by remarks contrary to the truth, harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgments concerning them.

2478
To avoid rash judgment, everyone should be careful to interpret insofar as possible his neighbor’s thoughts, words, and deeds in a favorable way:

Every good Christian ought to be more ready to give a favorable interpretation to another’s statement than to condemn it. But if he cannot do so, let him ask how the other understands it. And if the latter understands it badly, let the former correct him with love. If that does not suffice, let the Christian try all suitable ways to bring the other to a correct interpretation so that he may be saved.280

2479
Detraction and calumny destroy the reputation and honor of one’s neighbor. Honor is the social witness given to human dignity, and everyone enjoys a natural right to the honor of his name and reputation and to respect. Thus, detraction and calumny offend against the virtues of justice and charity.

The article on Fr. Woolsey was dated Sept 22. What sentence did he get? Gee, it might be worth it, to go to jail for $1 M. How about restitution?

He was sentenced to 1 to 4 years in state prison. Restitution was ordered.

This is a reminder that Christian charity is to be shown to all, including members of the hierarchy and politicians as well as to fellow posters. Name calling is not allowed and allegations are to be stated as allegations, not facts. This thread is now closed because of violations.
