To me, this battle illuminates two rival religious approaches, within the Catholic church and any spiritual tradition. One approach focuses upon dogma, sanctity, rules and the punishment of sinners. The other exalts compassion for the needy and mercy for sinners — and, perhaps, above all, inclusiveness.

The opinion piece appears to be yet one more diatribe directed against Bishop Thomas Olmsted, one of the most compassionate bishops I know. He is called above all else, especially as a bishop, to be faithful to Jesus Christ and His Church. And he is.

The brief clip linked above comes at the very end of a news conference in which he explains his actions with regard to the hospital which performed the abortion. I don’t have a link to the longer clip.

This is, I think, a much broader attack.

What struck me is the absence of any concern for the innocent life that was extinguished. I am not unsympathetic to the argument for sacrificing an innocent life to save the life of the mother but Kristol does not even attempt to advance that argument.

Instead he sets up an alternative clash between the poor mother and the mean Church and it’s arbitrary rules.
 
I think anyone who prefaces a piece of writing with “The National Catholic Reporter put it best…” needs to either significantly revise their opinions or choose something else to write about.
