“Well ain’t it a small world, spiritually speaking. Pete and Delmar here just been baptized and saved. I guess I’m the only one that remains unaffiliated.”

Perhaps I ought to have said that when I get started here, I don’t stop. 😊😃

Oh well, it’s all good. At least now I have an excuse to keep posting on here and boost my post total. 👍

My dad and I love that movie. I’m not quite sure what it is about it, but we laugh at it every time. There is always something hidden about the film to discover each time you watch it.

I finally saw it last night. AWESOME! That’s the sort of music I heard often as a child. And the story is fun; I fell for Delmar - dim, but sweet. 😉

I didn’t see it when I first heard about it as an aunt & my mother both complained about the profanity in it. Maybe it’s my increasing deafness, but the cussing seemed muted & didn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the movie.
Haven’t seen the movie (put it on my list, I guess), but I do adore “Man of Constant Sorrow.” Classic song.

I am not a big George Clooney fan (I loved his Aunt Rosemary), but I really liked his performance in this movie. It was funny. There might have been a few scenes I didn’t care for, but overall, I liked the movie and the music.
Does anyone remember that “stuff” Clooney’s character used in his hair?
I think back in those days which was around the depression, people were poor. I don’t know if there were laws that required people to go to school until a certain age or not, but I am sure some were lucky to have gone to school through the 5th or 6th grade. I don’t think The Grapes of Wrath made fun of people. It depicted how hard their life was and the poverty they experienced.

Dapper Dan. It was a pomade.

.
It was “Dapper Dan” pomade, which reminds me of a great line yet again, except I don’t know if the forum prohibits the use of profanity. Do they delete posts with profanity in them?

You could try asterisks. You know, d***.

Well, some people on here are bound to take offense to the profanity in the quote since it’s the example above with God in front of it. That might be a bit out of place on CAF.

Neither my dad nor my husband’s parents finished school - the Depression meant they had to work. My mother got a good education because she was younger & was able to go to college - that was after WWII.

In the movie, Pete & Delmar’s dreams say something about the times. Pete thinks being a maitre’d (am I spelling that right?) & wearing a bow tie are the top of the world. Delmar just wants his family farm back from the bank. “You ain’t no kind of man if you ain’t got land.” I can agree with that - my Daddy always told me that renting was putting money down a rat hole. 😃

It was much funnier than I had thought it would be. On top of that, it made me feel smart - I got most of the Odyssey references in spite of never having read the entire book. 🙂
Glad you mentioned that! Yes, the movie is really good if you get that it was based on The Odyssey, and can understand the references!

That’s right :). Thanks! I had never heard the word pomade before I saw this movie.
I had heard of Brylcream and in the 60’s there was Dippity Doo ( which might have been just for women). I wonder if Dapper Dan was a real brand name.

I know I read Homer’s Odyssey in college, but I missed any references to the story in the movie. Reading this thread is the first I have heard of the reference.

The sirens in the creek and John Goodman the “cyclops”…

Also the man at the beginning and his speech on the tracks.

Here is a list of the parallels:

It’s a great movie.
Wonderful music.
Thanks for the list! I LOVE this movie, but it’s been 30+ years since I read the Odyssey. I recognized some of the connections but also missed some – completely forgot about the locust eaters. :o

And I do remember the swearing – lots and lots of swearing.

Funny how some lines just stick with you: “D***, we’re in a tight spot.” :rotfl:

Yes – google it. Amazon sells it.
