Obama at ND: Only 168,882 petition signatures?!

We can and must do better. It’s hard to believe that only this many people signed the petition at notredamescandal.com as of Thursday afternoon (Pacific Time). Please help. There is strength in numbers. Thank you.
 
Also if I remember correctly those receiving a petition on line can figure there are 500 people that hold the same opinion. A hand written signature is considered equal to 1000 opinions.

On the Rock just gave the site for the petition.

I know we would all like there to be 270,000 signatures per hour (or whatever the server could handle without crashing). Unfortunately, 270 names per hour is not going to get us to numbers which generate real media attention to this perfidy.

Yes. perfidy is an archaic word–but it fits.

Perfidy- definition Deliberate breach of faith; calculated violation of trust; treachery: “the fink, whose perfidy was equaled only by his gall”

We need to surpass 1 million authentic signatures sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately, there is also a petition circulating which supports President Obama speaking at commencement.

Thank you for encouraging your Catholic friends and families to sign the petition in addition to contacting Notre Dame. This is important.

I’ve signed the petition but it will not sway Father Jenkins to change his mind about inviting President Obama or giving him an honorary law degree. He has made that clear – it’s a done deal. Unless …

The only other course of action seems to be that someone else be president of the university prior to the 2009 commencement. In other words, petition the board of trustees NOW to remove Father Jenkins from the university presidency, and to replace him with a priest who actually wants the university to proclaim, and never to compromise, its Catholicism in all its actions. Give honor to the university’s namesake, the Mother of our Lord, rather than perpetuate this scandal Yes, it will be controversial. Yes, the media will have a field day if President Obama is “uninvited.” But what a statement that action would be for all Catholic institutions of learning, to our politicians who want Catholics to simply roll over and be quiet, and for our entire nation.

To the students and parents of Notre Dame. I join with you in your just outrage at the decision of the University to award its highest honor to our Pro-Death President. If you truly want to make a difference:
  1. You should provide every one in attendance with a Rosary and you should pray at least a decade at the commencement for the souls of the 50 million murdered lives. Please state that the decade is for those murdered in the abortion death chambers.
  2. I would also ask our President and all in attendance to stand and bow their heads when the prayer is said in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary out of respect for the honorary degree he accepts.
  3. Finally, I would provide him with a Rosary and scapular along with his degree.

A cardinal and three bishops have protested Fr. Jenkins’ decision. I hope readers of this forum are asking others to voice their objections. Let’s pray that ND student groups and alumni will join the chorus.

I just signed it and I was a bit surprised that there have been only about 198,000 or so signatures so far. (I’ve been listening to this situation on Catholic radio all week and rather expected more.) I guess it really takes a lot for people to really take action.

Ironically, I ran into a friend who I have not seen in a long time. Her son is a high school senior this year and in our conversation yesterday, it came out his first choice was Notre Dame. I blurted out, “Wow! I wouldn’t send my son…” Then, out of politeness, I stopped myself and said instead, “You’ve heard about the flap there. What about it?” She just kind of shrugged and said, “Oh, that’s just a small group of people.”

It was not the time or the place to get into a discussion, but what do you folks think? Do you think it will be a tempest in a teapot or…?

Actually I have read that they do no good whatsoever. However, we have to make our voices heard in many ways and this is just one way.
 
An internet petition may not have any direct influence, but if people don’t speak up, they will take a silence as approval. Who knows? Maybe next time they might think twice before asking someone of such low moral character to speak.
 
The number of signature total over 233,000 right now. I’m glad that there were 13 bishops against this fiasco when this article was first printed. I bet there are more now. Fr. Mitch Pacwa mentioned this unwelcome event last night on EWTN Live. I hope more people continue to sign.
