Hopefully this will just have the opposite effect that he intended it to have and turn more people away from him.
That is my hope, but in reading comments following articles, it doesn’t seem so. It is very discouraging.

What is interesting is the basis whereby Obama based his support of “gay marriage”.

He stated it’s an equality issue between consenting adults.

Well if it’s all about equality and consenting adults…

Why doesn’t he support someone wanting to marry his sister, his brother, his father, his mother, two women or two women and three men?

What is different in these examples and “gay marriage”?

What logical basis is there?

You certainly can’t argue nor morality. Nor even history or culture, which is replete with incestuous and polygamous marriages.

In fact I would argue there is more sound basis in supporting incestuous and polygamous marriages than “gay marriage”.
There isn’t a logical basis, but let me provide the answer you will be given: “SLIPPERY SLOPE!” “That’s ridiculous!” Logic is not required when you are arguing for the relationship of two people of the same sex as equivalent to a complimentary, heterosexual relationship. 🤷

Good news for the Republicans. Romney now has a chance of winning IF he takes a strong stand against gay marriage, and if all conservatives unite behind him under that banner.

Weren’t you one of the people who called Mitt Romney a flip flopper for doing exactly the same thing? (except not on the gay ‘marriage’ issue).
No because moving from SS unions to SS marriage I don’t see as exactly the same thing as all the movement Romney has done.

I wrote this a group of Obama supporters Facebook wall: I wish to be removed from this group. The same sex marriage issue, the women and children contraception coverage… apparently President Obama holds nothing sacred. I am sorry I ever supported him, I wish he was never president, and I think he has done a shocking job as a leader and hope he won’t get another term.
He and the media machine have fooled many good people. The truth is finally coming to light…

True. Romney moved closer to Church teaching, rather than away from it. I can see why you would have a problem with that.

“The people of this country, especially our children, deserve better. Unfortunately, President Obama’s words today are not surprising since they follow upon various actions already taken by his Administration that erode or ignore the unique meaning of marriage.”

I have said before that this president shows contempt for the Church. He continues to show it.

You know its funny reading thru the posts that no one has said that we need to insure politically this does not happen. We need to maintain our states rights to individuality. Texas is very conservative and we will not stand for this at all. We need to stand up politically and shut this down now! Christ must rule and we can not let satan have more dominion that what he has. Lord Jesus save us. Amen and Amen
And yet the mayor of Houston is “married” to a woman and has adopted children. Uh huh, Texas is severely conservative.

👍

Marriage isn’t a religious freedom issue. Any church anywhere in the US is able to perform a religious ceremony for anyone and call it “marriage.” The question is whether the government should recognize, sponsor or sanction such unions. In states where the voters have been asked, the answer is “no.”
In my state ( NY) the voters clearly said yes. The country also said “no” in the past to women voting, giving civil rights to black men and women and in contrast said yes to imprisoning every Japanese person in this country. So, what "most’ people would want, though I know top political pollsters so I know that game, is really irrelevant.

I would not deny them this right and the majority of my simple, upstate working class parish at home agree with me. Its not a wild eyed liberal idea, its a basic right. As a country, I can see no reason for us to deny it. Theologically, we can debate it til the cows come home, but the government should offer it.

We should have a poll asking if anyone was even mildly surprised by Obama’s declaration. It’s laughable. What is not laughable is that there are many who truly believe his opinion has slowly “evolved” since 2008. Of course, Romney has the same problem so it’s another wasted election.

Marriage is a natural right, and people have a right to marry. Marriage as a matter of nature requires sexual complementarity and an ability to engage in sexual intercourse. A lack of sexual complementarity naturally excludes the ability for a marragie to be consummated. Same sex marriage is simply an impossibility. We might as well declare the right of water not to be wet.

To the idea (propagated by the administration) that Obama’s thoughts on gay marriage have been “evolving”, Here is a 2009 article which confirms that Obama has supported gay marriage since 1996:
huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/13/obama-once-supported-same_n_157656.html President-elect Obama’s answer to a 1996 Outlines newspaper question on marriage was: “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.” There was no use of the phrase “civil unions”.
I also remember Obama giving assurances to the gay lobby early on in his presidency (perhaps when he initially said he would enforce DOMA laws) that they would be happy with his position on gay issues by the end of his 1st term. Does anyone elce remember this?

I understand this is the natural law teaching of the church and I respect you as a fellow Catholic. Knowing many gay men and women who have the very same longing I have to marry someone and share their lives, I find that also to be part of the natural order. I have a hard time believing our benevolent creator would damn so many people to unhappiness by cursing them with a desire for love that can never be satisfied.

Also, having seen an uncle of mine commit rampant adultery and then receive an annulment from our church for his 40 year marriage, (destroying my aunt’s psyche in the process), I am not completely confident in our church’s stance on marriage. Not expecting to change anyone’s mind with this, but after watching much of my childhood annulled, I’m OK with being in opposition on this one.

Why limit your incredulity to unhappiness due to unfulfilled love? What about damning people to lifetimes of disability, such Down’s, autism, cerebral palsy, etc? Or people who lose loved ones at young ages (such as orphans), or are raised in abusive households?

I posted before, but I had long chats with a couple of widows in our parish that are cancer survivors. They have real perspective on suffering. We all have our crosses to bear. Some have much bigger, heavier crosses. It is no different with homosexual people and their same sex attraction. We cannot possibly understand God intends when people suffer. But we do know–if we believe in an omnibenevolent God–that He allows evil to exist so that a greater good can be realized.

I’ve been a chaplain in a major public hospital for two years and one of my colleagues was murdered last month, so besides taking exception to the tone of your post, I’m confident my perspective on suffering is pretty “real” as well.

Where did I suggest that suffering wasn’t real? Indeed, I pointed out that homosexual persons do have a cross to bear. Nor did I question your perspective on suffering. I merely pointed it out to demonstrate that the burden of same-sex attraction should be viewed the same way we view other cases of suffering.

As for my tone, I don’t know what you mean. I meant nothing more than what I wrote. There was no innuendo.

I enjoyed Father Z’s rant on the subject, too, by the way:

What the President did was vile. Even though everyone knew that was his position, how vile to hear it framed in that way, publicly given voice.

He is an embarrassment to the United States. He is actively tearing at one of society’s most important social bonds. What he did is harmful to our country and to every citizen of every age, even those of same-sex attractions. It was NOT a reflection of either charity or the Golden Rule in any Christian sense. The Golden Rule does NOT mean “you do what you want and I’ll do what I want”.

Pres. Obama MUST be voted out of office.
Thanks for posting Father Z’s article.🙂

And I agree with him, BO must be voted out of office!!

I have the feeling, that this was all planned…It was not Joe Biden’s mistake…to slip up…

It was planned, and its all about money as usual…😦

God help us!

PAX :highprayer:

"i’m shocked to find out there’s gambling going on here, shocked!!!:bigyikes:

I have. I disagree with it, based on my own experience. As I said, I am not an activist, nor was I ever attached to this idea, but I believe these people are deserving of a measure of dignity in illness and at the end of their lives and this word gives it to them.

I don’t want the government enforcing someone else’s faith on our church, either, so I believe this religious freedom the bishops keep talking about should be for both sides.
You self identify as Catholic but Catholics can not pick and choose teachings to adhere to.

So Obama has evolved to the point he has the same position on gay marriage as Dick Chaney? To bad he doesn’t hold some of Chaney’s other positions.
