I think the harm done by bestowing Obama with an honorary degree at Notre Dame will be even greater than we imagine.

We can only guess how many more people will now think that abortion is only an issue and not taking an innocent life.

It may be just the opposite. According to Gallup:

“The invitation has drawn criticism from conservative Catholics and the church hierarchy because of Obama’s policies in favor of legalizing and funding abortion, and the controversy might have been expected to strengthen the pro-life leanings of rank-and-file Catholics.”

The erosion is mostly in defining what Pro Life really means. I am sure that the vast majority of those at Notre Dame consider themselves prolife, yet they support such a pro death president.

Could be. Nevertheless I found the Gallup poll encouraging.

What gets me is that the media keeps stating that 54% of Catholics voted for Obama. It makes it seem like there is broad support from the pews and pulpits. They need to preceed that statement with the fact that 75% of Catholics don’t attend Mass or receive the Sacraments regularly.

Unfortunately this type of division goes way back to JFK. He stated that he was not a Catholic in terms of being president. He made it clear he would not bring religion into politics. Well, Catholics now long for the old days when they weren’t uncomfortable having that division. They don’t even let religion interfere with their voting. Abortion is different, and we have to stand up for life. It is not negotiable, or not just one of those things we can overlook.

I agree. They should let us know the number among PRACTICING Catholics.

There have been polls out there on just that. Shows that those that closely follow their faith and attend mass regularly do vote more inline with church teaching.

But the fact is the erosion has to stop as it draws more and more people away from the church.

He can try to erode faith. Among the faithful, he has no ‘hope.’

Certainly this is a great scandal and he has already caused much damage, but one good thing to come of it is that many more people have opened their eyes to the true nature of his agenda.

Excellent point, idrum677!

I hope you are correct in this, but I am afraid that it has hurt those Catholics on the fence much much more than we will know.

I’m tired of the term “Catholic” being used as a blanket statement. It’s as if being Cahtolic is akin to being a certain ethnicity, gender, or age group. Identifying yourself as Catholic is not the same as actually living as a Catholic.

I believe it is easier to educate those who are Catholic, but do not follow their faith than to convert other non Catholic Christians who do follow their faith.

I think the opportunity here is to educate those Catholics that don’t really follow their faith…on what pro life really means.

Many, if not most, that claim the title of “catholic” just mean they were baptized into the Catholic Church (or their parents were baptized) not that they believe or follow that the Magesterium of Catholic Church teaches and believes. I can say I am SWISS (my grandfather was Swiss) yet I have no real comprehension as to what being SWISS is.
