Exactly. As I also described above, any worker can claim zero deductions on their W4 and have additional monies withheld. Since the IRS doesn’t refund unless you file a claim, people can give as much as they want…

And you know without a shadow of a doubt that I haven’t been doing that since I started working 30 years ago?

Go ahead, keep throwing allegations. Too bad they aren’t true.

So what have YOU been doing to help alleviate the debt?

Not true. They got a raise in 2010. myfederalretirement.com/public/344.cfm
Regardless, pay increases for them if they go up a grade, and we can’t know how any individual’s pay changed, if at all, without knowing the grade shifts.

Of those who are not government employees who are making more than $200,000/year ($250,000 for a couple, not for an individual) from all sources, how many of them who are closer to the $200,000 than to, say a million “got a raise”, and how many of them “peaked” at some point and dropped? I’ll await the statistics. Non-government workers, unlike government workers, bear that risk.

But regardless, it will take quite awhile of “no pay raises” for federal employees to allow the rest of the populace to “catch up”. But I guess this is not the kind of “wealth redistribution” or “fairness” Obama wants.
They didn’t get the raise in 2010.
Senate Passes Bill to Deny Congress Pay Raise
Yielding to election year reality, the Senate passed a bill Thursday to deny members of Congress a built-in pay raise next year.
Russ Feingold, D-Wis., engineered the surprise passage of the legislation, which would deny senators and members of the House an automatic pay raise of about $1,600 next year. Members of Congress make $174,000 a year.
The Senate passed the measure unanimously without a roll call vote. The House has yet to act on it, but probably will go along given election-year pressures.
Jim

What they should be doing, is getting rid of the legislation they passed back in 1989, which gives them automatic pay raises.

What do you think the chances of that happening are?

Jim

how about Congress and the rest of them takes a pay cut say 50 cents for every person that is unemployed ?

better yet what would be an appropriate pay cut for Congress and the US Government, all the way up to the Office of President ( as Obama hopefully wont be President for life ) …

Seems the pay scale for emergency services should be higher than what the Government makes.

good luck trying to make that ever happen, as when one starts to take money from a politicians pocket, that is when all of a sudden everyone becomes bipartisan and wants to work towards a " compromise " .

When did I make an allegation? 😛

You claimed that people can’t give the government more than they owe, so now you are saying you can give more than you owe, and you (may) have been doing it the whole time? Mmkay. 😃

As far as what I am doing…I’m encouraging our government to cut spending. I’m not the one who is claiming to be in favor of spending more and more and sending us further in debt, claiming that we can’t give more than we owe in taxes and then reversing that claim and insinuating that I’ve been doing it the whole time by feigning anger over being accused of something I wasn’t accused of. 🤷

Not take government handouts and work and pay taxes? Something many Americans simply will not do?

Please provide the exact quote whe I said that “people can’t give the government more than they owe”-the first I am reading that is in your post above.

You can give the government whatever you want, but that’s not going to solve the debt. The honest people who pay what they owe and those who pay more will continually be outnumbered by those who have the means and the opportunity to skillfully avoid paying even what they owe.

And BTW-where was all this handwringing when we put two wars and a prescription drug plan on the credit card??? The SAME people who voted YES for all that, are now trying to tell us how big a crisis the debt THEY incurred is and how they need to cut education , social security, Medicare and programs that help poor people to get rid of it.

By all means, cut the pay for every Congress member who put us in this situation. All those YES votes are documented, it should be really easy.

THEY should have been worrying about wasting money on a failing educational system and the underfunded liabilities of Medicare and SS all along. No question about it. That does not, however, mean those things should never be addressed, particularly when the ability to pay for them grows less relative to their burgeoning costs and when this administration adds even more deficit spending to those deficit-causing programs.

And let’s get honest about this. Neither party does anything for the truly poor, and hasn’t for decades. The very last thing anybody did for the truly poor was the Earned Income Credit, and that was 'way back in Reagan’s administration. Those of the poor who don’t even get that, have gotten nothing since LBJ.

Let’s also recognize that while the deficit increased with the two wars and the tax reductions that preceded them, the deficits decreased to the point that, in 2007 the annual deficit with two wars going full bore was about 1/10 what it is now with one shut down and the other grinding down.

But did Bush and the Repubs overspend? Of course. Everybody knows that. But that does not excuse magnifying it ten-fold.

Not sure what you mean by “exact quote” since I didn’t directly quote you, but here is the interchange:
Well, since you are okay with that, perhaps you should donate an additional 10% of your money to the Federal Government, that way you can help cover our growing deficit. 🤷
And that whole “just send more of YOUR money to the government” thing sounds really smart when posted on a message board but it’s been debunked thoroughly by economics experts on those pesky non-opinion factual sites.
“Exact” enough?

Btw…why don’t you show me the quote of the “allegations” I made, since you are suddenly concerned with accuracy in responses. 😛

What do you mean? Are people who take available deductions not honest, or are you accusing a large number of people of fraud?

There was plenty of it in these fora. I can’t help it if you didn’t read it or ignored it. 🤷

Indeed. And from the same party whose one leader preached “Deficits don’t matter.”

The thing that nobody in that party has figured out yet is that every day more and more people are onto them.

It would be funny if so many people weren’t going to be hurt by it.

The republicans showed their incompetence in the last election. It is not good politically to be exposed as a hypocrite and lets face it, they have no credibility in the area of fiscal responsibility.

Definitely the Repubs were not fiscally responsible back six years ago when they had enough power to do it.

The Dems make them look good only by comparison.

But Ridge, let’s be fair. Do you really think McCain would have said “We have a spending problem” in 2009 had he been elected President as the stock market was continuing to be battered? Don’t you think he would have had no problem getting unemployment benefits extended, tax credits, schools funded, and so forth in the midst of a banking crisis which started btw under Republican watch? The Republicans had no problem passing a permanent drug program at the cost of $600 billion, no taxes to pay for it, and that was during “good” times, so I could easily see them spending double that to stimulate the economy.

**Republican lawmakers seek to block $900-a-year congressional salary hike
**
GOP lawmakers are rushing to introduce legislation blocking a congressional pay increase authorized in a recent executive order signed by President Obama, as bipartisan backlash to the planned raise grows.

thehill.com/homenews/house/275049-backlash-growing-to-congressional-pay-increase-
Obama didn’t put an executive order to give congress members a pay raise. The automatic pay raise was signed into law by congress back in 1989. H.W. Bush approved it.

Keep in mind the average employee’s wage over at Goldman Sachs is over $500,000 and they all contributed to the Romney campaign. Not accusing him of anything but just trying to put things into proper perspective here.
Irrelevant what GS employees make. I don’t pay them. And that is not anywhere close to the average employee pay for GS, not anywhere close. They wouldn’t be in business if they paid their employees that much.

And secondly, Obama actually got more Wall Street money.
