It drives me crazy when people scream about how our president (constitutional law professor at an Ivy League school) doesn’t follow the constitution and they themselves have no idea what is in it or how it is amended.

Yeah, my mom was talking to me about this and she said no matter what he does to us we have God on our side and we will be happy with Him in heaven someday and that’s all that matters. In daily Mass today, my Priest said that Mitt and Obama and all the other political people running want you and will do anything for your vote, but Jesus said follow me. He picked us personally to follow Him. And He did not say it was easy, but our reward for being faithful to is heaven. So please, offer up all of our sufferings from Obama for the poor souls in purgatory. Truely, all the sufferings he causes us helps us get to heaven. Remember, all that matters is heaven.

Otherwise, (and I know people will say I’m wrong) cash in the bank. I am not a stock market expert, but it seems “toppy” to me, particularly banks and major capital goods manufacturers like CAT. Will there be a major selloff sometime in 2013? I don’t know. But I would bet on it before I would bet against it. I would keep my powder dry.
Gold and silver are not the worst bets, but they produce no income and their prices are totally dependant on government actions or inactions. They can go down sharply if the fed panics about inflation and raises interest rates. They can also go down with general deflation or disinflation. Everybody expects inflation (and so do I, for the most part) but inflation is not totally dependant on the money supply. It’s also dependant on velocity; that is, the rate at which it changes hands. The Fed could reduce interest rates to zero and it won’t inflate if people don’t invest it or buy stuff. As the population ages, velocity decreases dramatically. Over age 55, people are net savers, not spenders.
This will sound weird, but hardwood forest land with pretty decent species on it isn’t the worst idea. Might take a long time, but eventually the economy will revive, and furniture species like walnut, white oak, cherry can be worth a lot when everybody decides to refurnish at once. I have seen a single walnut tree go for $5,000…now that’s a really big one, straight, veneer quality and with at least two “logs” in it. You can even get state money in my state to “weed out” the junk species to favor the better ones. But everybody has pines and big companies own millions of acres of them. Hardwoods aren’t “plantation” species. I wouldn’t do pines. I wouldn’t do red oaks either. You really have to study trees, though, to not mess up on this.
Finally, “investing in your own debt” isn’t the worst idea. If you have investment dollars and debt, both, you have to get a pretty good return on the investment to beat the rate you’re paying on your debt.
