Cracker Mom –
You are correct in that the Special Olympics is for those w/ intellectual disabilities and not physical ones. (I believe that is the Paralympics, which is a separate thing.) And yes, it is true that - technically - I have a different type of disability than those who participate in the Special Olympics. I totally understand your point.
I guess when this whole thing happened, my immediate thought was wanting to defend those w/ developmental disabilities because I feared they couldn’t defend themselves against what was being said about them online. By that – I mean, the remarks that Obama’s comments were “no big deal,” “small potatoes”, that they should just “learn to take a joke”, etc…. Being physically disabled, I felt I could “relate” to those in the Special Olympics in a way able-bodied people couldn’t, so I felt justified in pushing back against the comments I saw online. Despite all the comments I’ve exchanged w/ others, I still feel this way, since I see those w/ developmental disabilities as sharing in some of the same struggles that I am.
Hope that explains my stance.
