HONOLULU — President Obama will press ahead with a set of executive actions on guns next week despite growing concerns in the United States over terrorism that have dampened some Americans’ enthusiasm for tighter firearms restrictions.

The president will meet Monday with Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch to finalize a series of new gun control measures and will announce his package of proposals soon after, according to several individuals who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plan is not yet public.

One of the main proposals Obama is poised to adopt would require some unlicensed gun dealers to get licenses and conduct background checks on potential buyers. The change is aimed at occasional dealers, including some who sell online frequently or rent tables at gun shows but do not have a storefront.

These changes are little more than symbolic, just a slight lowering of the bar on who needs to be considered as a regular dealer.

He’s really desperate to have some legacy bullet points.

Wow pun totally intended I guess! :rotfl:

I wholeheartedly and without any reservation whatsoever applaud President Obama for these anticipated actions. In a 2014 poll a whopping 80% of Americans favored closing the gun show loophole.

The Republican led Congress has had their chance and more than enough time to listen to the American people. Yet they have failed miserably. So if it then takes President Obama to lead the way and to do something, anything, within his power, about the gun violence in this country, may God bless President Obama for attempting to do something it. These only seem to be common sense, reasonable steps. Not an all out assault on the 2nd amendment although I’ve little doubt the NRA, the gun lobby, Republicans and their cohorts will play it up to be.

Washington (CNN)About half of all Americans oppose stricter gun control laws, a larger segment of the population than those who support tighter controls on guns, according to a new CNN/ORC poll released Wednesday.
Nearly three weeks after the latest mass shooting claimed the lives of nine people, 52% of Americans now oppose stricter gun control laws, 6 percentage points more than the 46% of Americans who support such laws. That’s a wider gap than in June when CNN last surveyed Americans on gun control, finding that the public was equally split at 49% on the issue.
The advantage of those opposed to stricter gun control laws over those in favor is outside of the poll’s 3-point margin of error.

Open Carry law takes effect in Texas, but activists keep fighting

I think its more on an overall trust issue.

I don’t know what is going to make Americans break on this issue other than perhaps time and boredom. Eventually, too many people become steeped in computers to be bothered with guns or the revisionist interpretation of the 2ND amendment that arise in the 70s. Dead children are insufficient. Firearms exist in a compartmentalized area that is immune to the common sense safety laws that are everywhere. I morally applaud undemocratically defying the mob, but these changes are going to be limited. We just need to wait for a Congress in the future that is different.

He needs to ban assault rifles and these ultra-lethal bullets. There is no reason anyone outside of the military and law enforcement needs those. They aren’t needed fort self-protection or for hunting (I hate hunting, makes me cringe, but that’s another thread).

What are these “ultra lethal” bullets, I’ve never heard of them before. They sound like they might be quite handy for self defense.

And what’s your definition of an ‘assault rifle’?

If dead children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in addition to all the other mass murders, including those at a CO movie theatre and a SC church, all since Republicans took control of the House of Representatives, didn’t get Republicans to defy the gun lobby and act, I fear you may be correct.

Lily, well said. :clapping:

If no one should have them that should also include the police, military and of course criminals. When I look at the avg age of people in the military, I don’t get a real good feeling knowing how they grew up and what there values, belief systems are like.

Keep in mind, the founding fathers saw fit to include provisions that the general public would be equally armed as the authorities, just in case we ever reached a point where the people had to fight against the Govt.

If you only allow the public ‘pea shooters’ and small caliber guns, they would never stand a chance against a heavily armed military force…thus giving FAR too much power to the Govt.

I believe it was George Washington that said any Govt that attempts to disarm the population has evil intentions, but our modern Govt is crafty, instead of coming out and disarming everyone by force, they have systematically ‘conditioned’ a great majority of people into thinking all guns or some guns need to be out of our hands (Govt knows what is best for us kind of thinking).

Dangerous times we live in.

The public would never have a chance against a heavily armed military force today, even with the weapons they are allowed to have under the law.

The founding fathers had no vision of the types of weapons the citizenry would have access to in the 21st century to commit mass murders in schools and churches to name just a couple of places.

In that case, next they may demand tanks, missiles, nukes and so forth.
