In his last official act of business in 2011, President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act from his vacation rental in Kailua, Hawaii. In a statement, the president said he did so with reservations about key provisions in the law — including a controversial component that would allow the military to indefinitely detain terror suspects, including American citizens arrested in the United States, without charge.

The legislation has drawn severe criticism from civil liberties groups, many Democrats, along with Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, who called it “a slip into tyranny.” Recently two retired four-star Marine generals called on the president to veto the bill in a New York Times op-ed, deeming it “misguided and unnecessary.”

I think President Obama did the wrong thing by signing this bill, but lets face it… it was initiated and passed by the US Congress. And leadership in both political parties are to blame.

True enough.

I bang my head against a wall because Mr. Obama ran against the Patriot Act in 2008 (that is, he consistently bashed it). Yet he had no problems signing something into law that makes the Patriot Act seem like a civil rights bill.

Why sign a bill that is clearly unconstitutional? Especially as a constitutional law professor? Good luck ever getting hired to teach at a reputable law school again. Yeah I was the guy who signed into law that bill that the Supreme Court tore apart and (hopefully) declared unconstitutional for violating the 5th Amendment.

Now I am really confused, this is not a treaty. Having reservations when you sign a bill from congress does not exempt us from the portions of the bill the president objects to. (Unlike having reservations about certain portions of a treaty when a country signs).

And electing John McCain wouldn’t have made a difference as he was pushing for this bill despite the protestations of one senator Rand Paul.

The long term results of this policy probably won’t be felt for a few years. The immediate result, I fear, will be to our troops overseas. If the US can detain people without trial indefinately, our percieved enemies will do the same. Just like if we torture them, they will torture us.

Ummm … I hate to break it to ya, … but those perceived enemies have been killing their own people for centuries.

They don’t need any lessons from us on mistreating their own citizens. They have already been doing it. In part, we have been there to try to get them to stop.

And based on what has happened in Iraq as soon as our soldiers left, it looks like they are reverting to their old time-honored practices … with no help needed from us.

And when they get an opportunity, they use Westerners for practice. You should see how they used a camel to kill a French soldier. Not a pretty sight.

Something tells me that Ron Paul will be the only candidate talking about this in the primary debates.
I don't expect much to happen immediately, but I view this as part of the groundwork before a de-facto US government begins silencing all dissent from both the right and the left. I hope various communities would now begin declaring themselves NDAA Free Zones.
