Obama to wear robe with cross and Virgin Mary prayer at Notre Dame commencement

I am posting this because I was horrified that Obama had the IHS covered up when he chose to speak at Georgetown, and horrified that the University allowed that. I am not sure how I feel about him wearing the robe. I don’t really want him to because of what it means, but I won’t be pleased either if he shuns it after all the turmoil that has come of this speaking engagement.

“I honestly don’t know what the dress code is for that day. I can assume that the president would wear what one traditionally wears at that commencement,” Gibbs told Lucas during Monday’s White House press briefing.

Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown told CNSNews.com earlier this month that the university expects Obama to wear the robe.

The question was posed after the monogram “IHS,” which symbolizes the name of Jesus, was covered up when Obama spoke at Georgetown University, a Jesuit university. Georgetown officials said the “IHS” was covered at the request of the White House.

Honestly, I will be very pleased if he wears this robe and recognizes the Christian nature of Notre Dame. President Obama is among those who most need God’s mercy and protection, and I will continue to pray for him.

I agree. I don’t see anything bad with President Obama recognizing Notre Dame’s Christian roots after the Georgetown debacle.

Am I the only one that see this as something not to be done? How can people expect Catholics and our beliefs to be respected when those in charge of Catholic education don’t hold our symbols in respect. To place on someone an outward “sign” of belief knowing that person does believe in the meaning of that sign is IMHO truly wrong. (I won’t use the harsh words I am thinking here). I think he should wear a plain robe. Not one with symbols & beliefs represented on it that he obviously doesn’t agree with. Otherwise he is a hypocrite.
Now symbolism that is on the podium that is what Notre Dame supposedly believes in should not be taken down or covered up, either.
Honesty & Truth should be shown.
Actually Obama shouldn’t even be there at all IMO!

President Obama has a juris doctor degree. The traditional academic color for law is purple. He should wear his purple robe with the three stripes on the sleeve and whatever hood he received. Academics wear the caps, gowns, and hoods of the institutions who granted them. Since President Obama taught constitutional law for ten years, he should have a full set of academic dress as it is customary for the faculty to attend graduation ceremonies in academic dress. He need not, and in my opinion should not, wear Notre Dame’s academic dress and symbols to receive an honorary degree. As the secular president of the United States, he should not be wearing religious accoutrements when he speaks.

I agree totally with OriginalJS.
Since the president has no clue of the meaning of our Catholic Symbols, no one should give or put them on him. He’s not in communion with the Catholic Church.
I am increasing the amount of praying for all these public officials and the poor Fr. Jenkins who had given in to the demands of the enemy. Lord have mercy!!

I really disagree with this logic. Obama declares Christianity. But, even if he didn’t, if we truly believe that Christ is our Lord then we understand that He is also the brother of Obama. And, we believe that our Holy Mother is the Holy Mother of Obama as well. Mary loves ALL. Jesus loves ALL. And, Obama is not loved less by God than you or I. He should wear the religious symbolism on the doctorate gown. Maybe he’ll feel a sense of what is truly important in this world.

Notre Dame’s administration doesn’t care about the millions of babies that will be murdered because of Kenyan born citizen Barack Obama’s stance on abortion, and his using taxpayers money to provide murder for hire doctors (so-called).

Wow…that’s a bit drastic to say (that Notre Dame doesn’t care). Of course Notre Dame cares. I don’t want the President to receive and honorary doctorate, and I’m very upset that his will. However, to Fr. Jenkins’ defense, he has made it very clear that Notre Dame is a pro-life university and will never take part in embryonic stem cell research. And, that the university does not agree with Obama’s life issues. The university has a fund for human life, ethicscenter.nd.edu/lifefund.shtml, and the Notre Dame Right to Life is probably the most active social service agency on campus (sending well over 200 to DC each year for the March for Life), nd.edu/~prolife/. The students are protesting this prayerfully, www.ndresponse.com. Pray good comes from it!!!
