**Obamas’ First Kiss Marked By Plaque Outside Chicago Mall **
The moon landing and the Kennedy assassination are among the world changing events that have had plaques commissioned to commemorate them and remind future generations of their significance to humanity.
And in that spirit it was only a matter of time before the time and place of Barack and Michelle Obama’s first kiss was given such an honour.
The plaque placed outside a strip mall in the Hyde Park neighbourhood of Chicago marks the site of the 1989 kiss on the corner of Dorchester and 53rd Streets.
The president treated the first lady to ice cream at a Baskin-Robbins in the mall, which is now a Subway restaurant. The Obamas will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary in October.
Inscribed on the plaque is a quote from the president describing the moment: “On our first date, I treated her to the finest ice cream, Baskin-Robbins had to offer, our dinner table doubling as the curb, I kissed her, and it tasted like chocolate.”
Just noticed this is the Huffington Post UK edition so it probably comes from the “Those crazy Americans!” file.

Why on earth is Obama’s first kiss even an issue or interesting thing? I mean other than the fact that he is the President of the United States of America I don’t see what makes him so important that a plaque such as this needs to be made.

May that be the last memento to the abortionist and would-be destroyer of the sanctity of marriage.

The Obama cult of personality is nauseating. His supporters are like a bunch of teenage girls fawning over the latest “teen heartthrob.” I mean, this takes its cue straight from Seventeen magazine.

:rolleyes::rotfl:

I don’t think the Obamas are involved in this at all. From what I’ve read, the mall owners are the ones who wanted to do this as a way to increase business. I don’t really have a problem with it, so long as it was privately paid for.

This story’s a little old. I would think the Brit press would be a little more groundbreaking. 😃

In the spirit of partisanship during an election season, there is a Romney tie-in:
Romney’s Bain saved site of Obamas’ first kiss
Bain Capital, the investment firm that Mitt Romney made famous, made a leveraged buyout that saved the site of Barack and Michelle Obamas’ first kiss.
In 2005, Bain and two other private equity firms purchased Dunkin’ Brands Incorporated for $2.425 billion, according to a 2006 company press release.
Dunkin’ Brands is the parent company of Baskin-Robbins, at whose Hyde Park, Chicago location the president and his future wife Michelle went on their first date — and shared their first lip lock…

Oy, when I first read the title, I thought it said plague, not plaque. I was wondering if it was some kind of conspiracy theory or something. I’m glad it’s just a plaque, and not a bunch of people getting sick.

Its not much of a tie-in. The plaque is in a shopping center near the old Baskin-Robbins store. Morevover, the shop which the Obamas visited closed quite some time ago. However, there is a new B-R store a few blocks away.

As someone else mentioned, this story is a couple months old. I know we have discussed it before in this forum.

Chicago can erect whatever shrines it wants. But a president’s “first kiss” shrine is a very odd one to put up.

Yes, but remember, this plaque was not put up by the city, but by a company which owns the shopping center where the plaque is located. Its a business move, designed to attract visitors, and hopefully customers, to the area.

Whether that will work, I don’t know. But the cost would have been low, and look at all the free publicity it has generated.

Just so. Good ol’ American private enterprise at work. What’s not to love?

Just remember folks in Cheeee-kaaaa-gooo. There’s still a street called Balbo Drive, named after the Italian Fascist, Italo Balbo.

So don’t think Cheee-kaaaa-gooo putting up memorials to dishonorable people is a new thing 😃 😛

Why on earth is Obama’s first kiss even an issue or interesting thing? …
The same reason all those tabloid stories sell so well at the check-out counter.

“The intelligent mind thinks about ideas; the average mind thinks about things; the lower mind thinks about people.”

You don’t think a plaque commemorating the first time he kissed Bill Ayres is worthy of discussion?

I didn’t think they were involved. The fact that it was done for that reason is really exactly what I’m talking about. Obama is the only politician I can think of whose “fan base” has such a crush on him that anyone would think to play that angle on them. The man is really more of a rock star than a president. If you don’t believe me, check your local music store. If it’s anything like ours, Pres. Obama has his own spot in the Rock section. 😛

Haha…I misread the title and thought his first kiss was marked by a plague. 😃
