Hi. Will anyone who has any information on the Oblates of the Virgin Mary (OMV) please share their thoughts/opinions on this thread.

I am discerning the sacred priesthood and would like to be able to find a congregation that is orthodox and faithful to Rome.

From the page, Signs of an OMV Vocation (emphasis mine):
The Oblates of the Virgin Mary are serious about seeking holiness. Centered on the Eucharist, devoted to Mary and faithful to the Magisterium, the Oblates serve the Church as teachers of authentic spirituality and heralds of the mercy of God. The qualities and signs of an Oblate vocation that we are looking for in a man who feels called to religious life and priesthood are:
  • Serious desire to become a saint
  • Loving relationship with the Blessed Virgin Mary
  • Fidelity to the Holy Father and the Magisterium of the Church
  • Humble spirit of sacrifice and zeal for souls
  • Desire for contemplative prayer and silence
  • Capacity for friendship and community life
  • Confident masculine identity and integrity
  • Heart open to obedience and capable of effective teamwork
  • Generous spirit of service
  • Potential for genuine empathy, spiritual fatherhood and discernment
  • Physical and mental health necessary for work and study
  • Solid foundation in human experience and maturity
All 3 priests whom I have corresponded with via e-mail have affirmed their fidelity to the Holy Father and Magisterium of the Church, et alia.

Please let me know what you think!

God bless.

Vidimusdominum,
Code:
Is you quest specific to the Oblates or are you still searching for an orthodox community?

I know nothing about the Oblates because I am not aware of any in my area. I was also unaware of the Legion of Christ priests until they started a university in Sacramento. There is also a high school seminary just outside of Sacramento....up in the hills. The Legion of Christ order is very orthodox and true to Rome. They spend many years studying before they profess.

Good luck in finding a good match for you. Are you still in school?

The Oblates of Mary have a community in my area, near Kilburn - hadn’t heard of them until a friend alerted me to their parish. They are faithful, active, and loving - from what I understand they are growing at a rate of knots, but are suffering a shortage of english speaking vocations, at least in Europe.

Not that I would wish to take a potential from the Oblates, but in the course of your discernment, have you visited an Opus Dei representative at all? I know there’s a lot of crazy rumours spread about them, but when it comes to unshakeable orthodox confidence, I really cannot fault them.

Growing up, the Church my family attended was staffed by Obaltes of The Virgin Mary. They were very good Priests and after leaving that area, I struggled finding a church that worked for me like that one did. I always felt that they were faithful to the liturgy and very pious.

I would have to say that it is the Oblates. Reason being that it took me quite a while to find a congregation that is orthodox, devoted and explicitly faithful to Rome. Also because I find many similarities between their charism and my own spirituality.

Thank you. I’m 19, go figure! 😃

This is heartening to hear!

Is that so? I understand that they have about several parishes and houses over 4 states in USA. But I guess that you might be right since most of their international aopostalates are in non-English speaking countries; apart from Canada and the Philippines.

It is interesting that you mentioned this. An enderly parishioner whom I know is arranging for me to meet an OD priest for luch this Thursday.

I have attended Mass at their chapel in Boston several times. They seemed to be orthodox (no shenanigans during Mass) and the homilies were good. The priests were young, and they seemed active and faithful.

Hope that helps a little.

May God Bless your vocation abundantly.

I think you have chosen well! Those recommendations are exceptional.

Can you define “oblate”? I checked the definition on the net and it sounded like it was for religious who do not take vows. Another definition was a flattened sphere:rolleyes: There is probably an interesting history to the reason for the name oblate.

My only encounter with them was the priest we had for one of our community retreats. They have a strong focus on Ignatian spirituality. It was a wonderful retreat. Nothing came up that would have made me question their orthodoxy.

Good point. I have already sent an e-mail to one of the OMV priests whom I’m in touch with. Will post the answer here.

God bless.

Here’s the answer. Straight from an OMV priest:
Oblate comes from the word oblation, which often appears in the psalms. It refers to a sacrifice offered to God, e.g. “accept my burnt offering as an oblation”. So an Oblate is someone who is dedicated to God or offers himself to God.

In practice, an oblate is another name for a religious. Our founder said that we are called oblates of Mary because we are dedicated to giving the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius under the patronage of Mary.
Hope it has helped!

they are the real deal. orthodox and Marian. they will be the ones, the new Saints and martyrs, the Church will bring up in the next age.

“no shenanigans” heh. those ones get nervous because of servants such as the Oblates…

Thank you everyone. I hope to be able to meet the community at one of their stay-ins this year.

Pray for me.

Hi everyone,

Just want to inform you guys that I will be visiting the OMV community in December. Please keep me in your prayers.

God bless,
Vidimusdominum

I live just a few blocks from their Eucharistic Shrine and Chapel in Boston. I have been attending Masses at both locations and have to say am very impressed. They seem to be strong, orthodox leaders.

With one exception (he seems a little different than the rest), every interaction has been positive. My one not so great experience may have just been a bad day or it could even have been me (imagine that…). If you do have a vocation to the priesthood and the OMV, it would certainly be a blessing to the whole world.

You will be in my prayers as I head to one of their Masses right now.

Great community and among my favorites in the Church! We need more of them in the USA! Very faithful and orthodox. Their spirituality is very attractive and very devotional. Great choice if you decide for them! 🙂 👍

Prayers In Christ

Thanks for all the encouraging feedback!

United in prayer,
Vidimusdominum
