Obtaining First Class Relic (Reboot)

Upon the advice of a wise person ( ) I thought I’d start this thread from the original one ( forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=75838 ) just in case anybody wishes to revisit the subject. My last post was:

He’s not around to ask but I did have it confirmed by and Augustinian priest. Dad had a few relics from priests and religious but I never was interested at the time so I never asked. I regret that now.

I am fully aware of what a first class relic is and I am only going by what an Augustinian priest told me. If it’s not then it’s not. I’m not saying, “Look at me I have a first class relic!” You may look at the photos I provided and decide for yourself.

I may ask again, but I don’t think there’s a need to. I honor it as I would any class relic (or saint).

Wow! I read the entire first thread and looked at all the links.

Your father having had possession of a relic makes sense, the seal matches the one in the link it would appear. Even without the papers, you have a magnificent relic in my opinion. How blessed you are to have not only something from your dad that obviously meant a lot to him, but something so precious and rare.

Did you look at the photos and at the information in the links?

CatholicFireman, I don’t understand the need of people to be so negative. “Speculation” is in the mind of the beholder. I would take the opinions of the 2 people (one being a priest) you consulted that have actual knowledge over the words of people that just need to be negative for the sake of bring negative.

And if you had paperwork, next people would be telling you that you shouldn’t keep it for yourself. So be happy for what you have, and be glad it’s “nothing.”

Your comments are irrelevant. Authentication requires official documents. Without that a claim to have a genuine relic is meaningless.

I really think you’re only reason for posting here is vanity (you know, “holier than thou”). During this Lenten season, maybe we should examine our motives when we post on CAF forum and we if we are being truly charitable (i.e. to clergy, particularly the one I mentioned who I have the utmost respect for. I believe his “opinions” more than a faceless poster).

But for now, as OP, I will deal with this as I see fit.

Only official documentation proves what you have is authentic.

I have a third class relic of St. Padre Pio.

Someone also sent one to my husband last year at Christmas anonymously in a Christmas card, but we think that we know who it was.

We believe that it was a Catholic coworker of his who mailed it to him here to him at our home address. That was thoughtful of her to do that.

That would make sense then that a priest probably gave it to him, and now you have it to cherish.

No. This is not correct.

It happens not infrequently that relics get separated from the authentication, above all when it concerned relics possessed by those in Religious life.

The lack of the document does not render the claim meaningless at all, especially where the provenance is beyond dispute. On the other hand, the authentication matters principally if the relic is destined for the public veneration of the faithful.

Moreover, the Vicariato stopped issuing authenticates for relics from the first centuries that could no longer reasonably be historically attested to.
