Occasional marijuana use?

Seriously? It’s a DEA site…of COURSE it’s going to be anti-marijuana. Propaganda.
Trusting the DEA to give good information about drugs is like trusting Wall Street with one’s money. Can you say fox guarding the henhouse?

I don’t think anyone’s shown how it follows that something is sinful BECAUSE it is harmful to your health. It’s a simple fact that smoking can cause cancer, and I’ve known people who’ve died from drinking too much. But being a good Catholic and a good disciple of G. K. Chesterton, I like my cigars and whiskey.😉

This is why you don’t drive under the influence of anything, be it cough syrup, alcohol or pot. This is not responsible use. The question here is about the moderate, responsible use of marijuana. A vivid example of some moron getting high and driving into a jogging stroller is no different than a moron who drinks and drives and plows into a school bus. Just because some people cannot use these substances responsibly does not indicate that they should all be illegal.
Except you said in your previous posts that you confessed smoking pot because you made some poor decisions afterwards. It seems to me you are still trying to justify your habit with saying you can moderately smoke pot even though you have previous said it has caused you to make poor decisions and the need to confess your sins. If you know something, ANYTHING, puts you in an occasion of sin, why would you still want to find a loop hole here or there to continue putting yourself in those situations?

You and some of the other posters and I will continue to disagree that smoking pot is a moral sin, but the bottom line is you do not want to hear what the priest told you in your OP. You are looking for a way to invalidate what he told you in the confessional by continuing to debate this topic. If you really have a problem with what the priest said, go back and talk to him again, or find another priest to discuss the issue. You want some of us that are against smoking pot to consider that it isn’t a sin, you also have to consider that what the priest said was correct.

Marijuana can be used responsibly just like alcohol can be. You’re not forced to drive under the influence of either, and you shouldn’t drive under the influence of either, claiming traffic accidents does not help against pot, because alcohol can do just as bad or worse.

Marijuana, like alcohol and other things can be used responsibly or irresponsibly. It is still up to the person to decide when they’ve had enough, and yes, people can tell when they’ve had enough, similar to how people can tell when they’ve had enough alcohol.

As for that dea fact sheet, that’s a horrible source. For one thing, it’s the dea, I can’t think of a more biased source. Second, they gave no reasoning behind their argument at all, just basically “it’s harmful because we say so, that’s why it’s illegal”. And I’ve read many other sources that contradict what they said and say that marijuana is not that harmful.

As for rehab though, well you have somewhat of a point there; marijuana can be psychologically addicting, and I won’t deny some potheads could serious use some help. Having said that though, marijuana’s legal counterpart- alcohol, which is legal and not considered a sin unless you drink to the point of losing reason, also has its own addict called alcoholics.

one thing not mentioned, that really stops me from smoking up the most is…where did it come from? could there have been people I’ll treated during the growing and harvesting process? Think about Columbia and possibility of someone being killed while trafficking. I realize lots of pot is grown in California, etc, but I do not want to take a chance of my 40 bag or is it 60 dollars now…to have been the reason for anyone being harmed.
The only reason they are being harmed or killed is because its considered illegal. If the government would take control of it like alcohol then there would be no trafficking which could result in no killing. Now during the proabition there was trafficking of alcohol and killings because of it. But once it became legal and the government took over all that stopped.

I don’t see anything wrong with occasional use of “pot” and I don’t see it as a sin. If I’m not mistaken, marijuana has been around and used during the time Jesus was around, I read or watched something about it on TV, Now if it is a sin then why isn’t it mentioned in the Bible about it being wrong. Now on the other hand it does mention about over doing drinking of wine that it is a sin. Now over doing anything is a sin. I have smoked 4-5 joints a day for years and was able to hold a very good job, my judgment was not impared because of it, and I was able to quit without and withdraws. I find it harder to stop smoking cig’s because I have failed at every attempt but with marijuana it was no problem. (I stopped because it was getting to expencive although with the price of cig’s now days has no bearing on my wanting or not wanting them, I’m addicted to them :imsorry:) I find that you drive better, slower and are more aware of your surroundings, at least it was for me. I find that it mellows you out unlike alcohol that make you want to do harm, makes you feel invincable, makes you drive all over the road and make you . Marijuana makes one want to eat everything in sight. If it is so harmful then why do they give it to people with cancer or people with certain sight problems.🤷 It helps ease pain, and for those who have a loss of weight problem, it helps them gain weight.👍 To me alcohol is much more harmeful then marijuana use. I find it funny that the one that does more harm is the one that is legal and the one that does less harm is illegal.🤷 Just my thoughts, opinion and experience.

Also, the OP’s question regarded occasional marijuana use - suggesting rehab sites (implicating addiction) is off the point, kind of like posting a link to AA if I were to ask if you approved of me having a beer with dinner. I know lots of people who have used marijuana, use it infrequently, and are certainly in no need of “rehab”!

If there ARE people in rehab for marijuana use, then it’s no different than alcohol, a perfectly legitimate and good pleasure which can become destructive when abused. I don’t think everyone at the wedding of Cana was stone-cold sober; just because something feels good doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad.

(Not trying to necessarily justify marijuana, just shooting down bad arguments against it.)

While that is true, our moral duties concern the situation that exists now, not the one we may wish for, or hope to come about years from now.

As it stands now, when you buy pot, you are contributing to a huge contraband market that people do, in fact, get hurt and killed over. The money is just that big. And it gets worse, not better, for other drugs. Saying “that wouldn’t happen if it was legal” doesn’t cancel your moral duty to NOT buy into this criminal marketplace.

This moral issue only vanishes if you grow the pot yourself. And then you have to ask if “getting mellow” is worth the significant risk to your freedom; IMNAAHO, that’s NOT what GOD made us free for.

God Bless and ICXC NIKA.

The only bad decision I ever made from smoking pot alone is possibly eating too many cookies afterwards 🙂 The poor decisions were made after drinking AND smoking pot.

I think Marijuana should be legal because it being illegal supports organized crime, and doesn’t have major side effects (I do still support prohibitions against driving under the influence, road side sobriety test seems close enough.

Ok lets look into the past, get into your wayback machine. Lets take alcohol for instance. Now it was legal for many, many, many, many years well ever since it was invented. Then here in the states, not so long ago, they made it illegal and what happened, HMMM there was alcohol trafficking other wise called bootleggers, now what do you think happened then, well there was harm to people, killings because of it, people put in jail or prison because it was illegal. Then they made it legal again and what happened, HMMM all that stopped, no bootleggers, no harm to people, no killings because of it, no people put in jail or prison, unless you are caught in a DWI. As it stood then you contributed to all the killings, bootlegging, harm to people and helped put people in jail or prison. Did the moral issue vanish then. Does it go away if you make your own alcohol? I can’t see how you can say yes when one criteria for altar wine is to have alcohol in it or its not considered sacred.

Marijuana has been around since recorded history. First use dates to circa 7,000 BC. It was used as a medical herb by ancient Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans for stomach ailments, cramps and pain.
It was first used in the states for medical puropses in the 1800’s
Its recreational use did not become wide spread until alcohol was banned during prohibiton (1920-1933). Prior to that it was used in the states for hundreds of years for its medical qualities.
In 1936 the government financed the movie “Reefer Madness” spreading untruths like it caused, people spiraling out of control. Hit and run accidents, sucide, homicide and rape.
It was called a powerful marcotic in which lurks, Murder, insanity, and death. The government spells it “marHuana” not “marijuana.” It was made illegal in 1937.

Now all studies in the 1950 concluded that marijuna has medical qualities and is NOT a marcotic and is NOT physically addictive.

How is “getting mellow” a rist to our freedom?

Do you have a bank account do you buy into that criminal market? Do you have a morgage do you buy into that criminal market? Both are criminals. The only difference is they have the government backing, Other than that people get hurt by them, families suffer because of them and the occasional murder happens.

We can talk about moral values. Do you or have you ever bought a dimond? Do you know that children as young as infants get their hands cut off by dimond cartel so they can’t take their dimonds?

Which will only become relevant in the unlikely event that the Holy Father declares the recreational use of marijuana in violation of federal law morally acceptable, in which case a priest would indeed be out of place forbidding it to his spiritual children.

:ehh:

I was talking about what the local priest says in general

Well, it doesn’t matter our opinion of the law. The government still takes marijuana usage as a serious offense, and it’s a lot of trouble that you don’t want if you get caught with it.

I have a priest who believes that the use of marijuana is a “serious sin” because 1.) It is harmful to the body 2.) It “damages” the mind and 3.) It is illegal

It does not seem as if he has ever smoked pot before.

I take issue with this because 1.) One can vaporize the marijuana and eliminate all or nearly all harmful effects (cigars, cigarettes, pipes and alcohol do far more damage, so this argument fails) 2.) It doesn’t “damage” the mind or cause one to lose their reason any more than moderate alcohol use, which is not sinful, so the argument fails there. 3.) It is illegal, but unjustly (IMO) and one can grow one’s own in minute amounts so as not to contribute to any real crime other than the growth and private use of a plant…if caught by the authorities, such a crime would be a misdemeanor and one would pay a fine (so this would be about as serious as deliberately exceeding the speed limit by a few MPH…certainly not grave matter)

Given all of this, I have a very hard time believing that this is truly a serious sin when done only occasionally and in moderation, much like having a few glasses of wine, without the hangover.

The priest told me this after my absolution at confession (during which I did confess to over-doing it sometimes in terms of alcohol and to occasional marijuana use) and honestly, i cannot say that I am resolved never to smoke marijuana again because I do not believe it to be a serious sin any more than a bit of alcohol is.

Frankly, I cannot say that I will never get a little tipsy again either. Keep in mind that I would not do any of these things to the point of losing my reason or self-control or committing a mortal sin as a result.

So my question is this: Is my confession still valid even though I am not firmly resolved never to smoke a bit or get a buzz on now and again?

Is smoking marijuana truly a mortal sin or is this just the opinion of one priest who has no expertise on the matter?
in my judgment, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with smoking marijuana.

it is a prudential judgment related to how you react with it, the legatlity issue, etc

I think your confession is valid if your were penitent for what you confessed

It would be totally irresponsible to legalize marijuana. I would vote against it.

Ed
