OCP has announced its Mass settings that are currently being revised which include:

Celtic Mass by Christopher Walker
Heritage Mass by Owen Alstott
Mass of Glory by Ken Canedo and Bob Hurd
Misa del Pueblo Inmigrante by Bob Hurd

The new Mass settings which include:

Mass of Christ the Savior by Dan Schutte
Mass of Renewal by Curtis Stephan
Mass of St. Paul the Apostle by Christopher Walker
Mass of the Resurrection by Randall DeBruyn
Misa Santa Cecilia by Estela Garcia-Lopez and Rodolfo Lopez

I don’t know if I can really say I’m looking forward to these, Probably only the revision of Heritage Mass and the new Mass setting: Mass of the Resurrection which is to be set to the tune “DUKE STREET”.

I’m glad there is no word of revision for the St. Louis Jesuits Mass, or Mass of Creation.

Marty Haugen is definitely revising Mass of Creation. There was a post on it just the other day on Pray Tell, with a link to a pdf from Haugen discussing MoC’s 25th anniversary and his process of updating it. He gives a couple of snippets of what the revised setting will look like.

Composers should try writing new Mass parts along the lines of sacred music (i.e. chant structure) instead of basing them on yet more unsingable, syncopated contemporary melodies or older hymn tunes like “Duke Street” or “Nicaea.”

Darn. I don’t know why this setting has never appealed to me.

[RE: Mass of Creation being redone]

Darn. But… I when you think about it, he wouldn’t need to really even redo it, because he never sticks with the text anyways! (Ba-dum cha…)

Seriously, hopefully he does stick to the actual text this time…

I hope that if he doesn’t the bishops do what they are supposed to do, tell him to make it right or not bother resubmitting it.

I hope that this time they won’t let a non-Catholic tell us what we should be singing.

Huh? Mass of Creation does stick to the text.

Hmm, yes, I thought it did too. 🤷
I posted an instant too fast, I should have pointed out “God of power and might” → “God of power, God of might”, which is the only actual textual change I can think of, and the repetition of the first line of the Gloria, which isn’t really a change to the words. Other than that, whatever its artistic merits (IMHO, fairly good, except for the Agnus Dei, but heavily suffers from overuse), MoC is actually one of the more faithful setting out there.

Yes, Agnus Dei. It is supposed to be “Lamb of God”, not “Jesus, Lamb of God.” This one change is why I quit using this tune. If a song must have a change to make it fit, then either the music is inappropriate, the artist is incompetent, or the artist is not giving it his best. This latter is a real problem with staff composers.

I look forward to the new settings. Hopefully, we will be able to find one easy enough and strict enough to use. If not, well I did just introduce Jubilate Dei this Lent. 😃

My goal will be to find an appropriate vernacular setting and still bring in the chant Advent, Lent, and Holy Days.

I concur.

I find Heritage Mass to be one of the more faithful settings out there. The unfaithful setting award would have to go to St. Louis Jesuits Mass.

Amen 👍 👍

Isn’t this what John Paul II said?

Agreed. Awful. I’m not sure I’ve heard it in eight or ten years, though, and I don’t believe it’s going to be updated for the new translations, so I think we’ll be able to close the book on it at long last.

Every time I see Christopher Walker’s name at the bottom of the page of an OCP Music Issue, I always do a quick double-take because I think it says Christoper Walken instead.

Forgive me, Lord!

ps: More cowbell please.

Actually, the settings by the late Richard Proulx were the most faithful to the text. These are the ones that I am sad to see go. I hope that he wrote settings for the new translations before he died.

I don’t know if you saw my thread. At least ICEL and MusicaSacram have excellent settings for the new texts.

CatholicZ09, I also cringed when I saw the OCP email, especially since Hurd’s Mass of Glory and Misa del Pueblo Immigrante is being revised.

Ugh! My parish loves the Mass of Glory. I can’t stand it. After studying liturgy and liturgiology, it just seems so foreign to the Holy Sacrifice, at least to me.

I actually got to sing the Sanctus from “A Community Mass” by Richard Proulx at the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday. It was very beautiful, and indeed, it would be sad to see these go.

I don’t know why, but Heritage Mass has been one of my favorite settings. Owen Alstott hasn’t taken liberties with the Gloria, Santus, Memorial Acclamations, Great Amen, or the Lamb of God for that setting. He doesn’t even suggest substituting “Lamb of God” for “Jesus Lamb of God…” etc. unlike Mass of Creation’s Marty Haugen.

I haven’t heard one good thing come from Mass of Glory. My parish has never used it. However, out of curiosity I played it, and it was too out of place for the Mass. Same with Bernadette Farrell’s Mass of Hope.

I guess Dan Schutte’s Mass of God’s Promise won’t be revised? I have to say, the refrain for the Gloria for that setting was really botched up:
Glory to God, give glory to God. Glory to God in the highest. Peace on the earth and glory to God. Peace to all people, peace to all people on earth.
