Dear Friends,

The Capuchin Fathers of the Province of Sant 'Angelo e San Pio in Italy have now published the official pictures and explanation (Italian language only) of the exhumation of his remains which was ordered by the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

Their online publication is available at this link:

The upcoming public presentation and veneration of the relic remains of the Saint’s mortal body will occur at the Church of San Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo on April 24th. His Eminence Cardinal Jose Saraivo Martins will officate at a Solemn Eucharistic Celebration at 11 a.m. on that day. This public veneration will last through September of this year.
The faithful are cordially invited.

Pilgrimages for devotees in the United States have been arranged by the National Center for Padre Pio. Please contact them at www.padrepio.org.

An official pronouncement about the Church’s position and understanding of the relics of Saint Pio is awaited from the Vatican.

Thank you and may every blessing of God be yours.

PRAYER FOR GRACES
THROUGH THE INTERCESSION OF
SAINT PADRE PIO

O God,
you gave Saint Pio of Pietrelcina,
Capuchin priest,
the great privilege of participating
in a unique way
in the Passion of Your Son.
Grant me
through his intercession
the grace of . . . (state intention) . . .
which I ardently desire;
and above all grant me the grace of
living in conformity
with the death of Jesus,
to arrive at the glory of the resurrection.

Glory be to the Father . . . (three times)

Amazing!

St. Padre Pio is one of my favorite Saints. It’s a humbling experience just to see the pictures.
Thank you so much for sharing.

I wasn’t aware this had happened until I came across this post. What was the purpose of their exhumation?

The bodies of many Saints whose remains were miracluously preserved after their death are displayed in various churches around the world. Further information about the history of the phenomenon of incorruptibility of the mortal remains of certain saints is available at this link:

www.overcomeproblems.com/incorruptables.htm

On account of this phenomenon, which is to be sure quite rare, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints as a pro forma matter, routinely orders the exhumation of the remains of certain individuals for examination. This is oftentimes done as a part of the process of beatification or canonization as it can help the Church in making an appropriate determination regarding the sanctity of the individual.

In the case of Saint Padre Pio the Vatican ordered and presided over the exhumation some 40 years after his death. No official statement to the effect that a determination that the relic remains of the Saint are considered to be incorrupt has been made by either the Congregation for the Causes of Saints or by the Franciscan Capuchin Friars who have responsibility for the remains.

Thank you.

That is really cool. Thanks for the explanation. I wonder what would happen if the remains were not preserved. Would they take away the Sainthood if it’s been given already? Or would they just keep tight lipped? I guess we really never know with the Vatican. 😃

Beatification and canonization are not dependent upon an individual’s body being found to be incorrupt. The mortal remains of most Blesseds and Saints are in fact not found to be incorrupt.

Because the phenomenon of incorruptibility has been witnessed, though rarely, in the history of the Church, it is one of the many factors which are considered when making a determination of the individual’s sanctity.

A wonderful book on this subject, The Incoruptibles, is available from Tan Publishers. It is very informative and edifying as well.
