Solution to South Park and other offensive shows:

Step 1. Unplug TV.

Step 2. Load TV into suitable vehicular conveyance.

Step. 3 Drive to mouth of Hell or other functional hole.

Step 4. Drop TV into hole.

Step 5. Never look back.

The invention was made with evil purposes. Watching TV is an occassion to sin. EWTN is God’s way of taking the TV and bring good out of it, just like the internet. God brought good out of an evil invention of Bill Gates.

No, living is an occassion to sin. Come to think of it, the only way to stop people sinning is to stop people living. Better launch the nukes now then in order to ensure that people can’t sin thus saving us all! 👍
 
How come you are so furious about SP mocking some guy, but you didn’t notice how they depicted catholic priests as some boy-molesting perverts in the very same episode??? maybe you didn’t see that episode, eh? I like SP and this episode disappointed me much, but I can critisize it because I watched it.

Then why are you wasting time on here whining about everything? Get out there and do all those things!

Besides which, watching TV made me aware that there ARE such things as abortion clinics, and just how many poor people and homeless there are out there that need help.

TV reports on issues, raises awareness and even (dare I say it) promotes fundraising for good causes (telethons anyone?) It doesn’t just provide entertainment or occasions of sin.
 
When you say there are so many better things to watch… not always. I don’t have cable (by choice… too MANY near occassions to sin!), so I am limited to just a handful of channels. South Park is on at midnight where I am (in syndication), so on nights when I couldn’t sleep, I would turn on the TV and see what was on. Not much at that hour, and usually I just wanted something light. Granted, I could have been saying the rosary, reading devotional books, etc. (which I try to do when I am NOT exhausted from a long busy day), but on the days when I just wanted to veg in front of the TV, I would watch SP for a few laughs. I don’t watch anymore…i decided against it.
But I’m not sure we can make a blanket statement that it’s always bad to watch such things…didn’t Paul (or someone) say that “everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial?” I don’t know. I’m just rambling.
 
Ok, I’m not judging anyone on here, so don’t get ina tissy. But it seems so immoral fro someone to watch this and still call them selves Catholic (or Christian for that matter). I mean, they mock Jesus, they mock the church, they mock everything that stand for goodness. How can this be a ‘guilty pleasure’ to so many who consider themselves Christian? I’d but south park on the same level as pornography. Would you consider porn just a ‘guilty pleasure’ or a mortal sin? I don’t think Jesus would appreciate being the butt of a joke just to give a a laugh. And I don’t think Mr. Irwins family would appreciate people laughing at a show that so grossly mocks him. My hat off to England for banning it. They know whn freedom of speech is taken too far. Maybe they have just a little more of a grip on morality than us americans.
Whenever a ‘good catholic’ is tempted to watch south park for a laugh, they should consider switching to EWTN instead.
I hope one of these days that disgusting piece of ‘entertainment’ is taken off the air.
 
“Freedom of speech being taken too far” is a concept I have trouble with. It relies on someone else’s opinion on what is acceptable to set the bar and many Christians have been killed for speaking out against those who used such measures to silence dissent, from the original Christians and the Roman Empire to the Nazis. I’d rather rely on my own standard and turn it off, but I wholeheartedly agree that it should be shown as I have no right to force my will over others.

As for Christ feeling insulted at this, I’ll leave that to the creators of South Park to explain it to Him when the time comes.

Ok, but what I’m asking is if it is morally right for a Christian to watch this show that mocks Christianity? I personaly don’t think so.

I would agree, it’s perhaps not morally right, but the descision must be made by the induvidual.

I like this show, even some episodes about christianity. If you saw it, you would at least know what you are talking about.
 
I really hate to see the Freedom of Speech argument brougt out to defend things like SP, Family Guy, ATHF. People died for our Freedom of Speech, not to protect blasphemy, but to allow people to speak up for the Good.

Freedom is not the same thing as license. Whether they are witty or not (and many of them are) it is best to shun such shows because in mocking the Lord, they mock us also and we become a self-mockery if we watch them just because the show is competently done.

I am accusing myself of this too. I find most of these shows witty, but when they portray God as sinful or use blasphemy for effect or degrade profoundly the dignity of the human person, I think I need to shun such shows and encourage others to shun them.

Notice, I did not say ban the show or make it illegal. Freedom of speech carries unfortunately license with it in a civil society, b ut that same Freedom means boycott and editorials and counter arguments are also uses of freedom of speech. In fact, such a use is exactly what good soldiers did indeed die to promote and fight for in Iraq and in the past.

It’s worth more thought on my part.

I’ve seen footage of the Holocaust. Does that make me complicit in that to? I’d say that it’s completely wrong NOT to watch it.
 
Free Speech is fine. It is just time to make it free - the advertisers should stop paying for it.
