Ok, so, I have decided to attend mass next Sunday...need more advice

Hi everyone, its ok, i am very serious about this so no, no one scared me off. I’ve read enough to be well aware that the changes brought about by Vatican II are quite controversial for a number of reasons. If anything you’re all helping me because these are things I think I should know. Thank you all for being concerned with this.

I just got back from Mass myself. Sometimes, I’m so overwhelmed by God’s presence and goodness that I can’t contain my tears!

Please excuse the intrusion, but what is OF? I’ve read through the entire thread and figured out what TLM and NO stand for, but OF is still a mystery, even after googling it I couldn’t find anything.

OF = Ordinary Form = Novus Ordo = The Mass currently used in most places, issued by Pope Paul VI after Vatican II
EF = Extraordinary Form = Traditional Latin Mass = the Mass of the Latin Rite before Vatican II.

Pope Benedict XVI introduced the terms OF and EF in his Apostolic Letter * Summorum Pontificum *

I am glad you are here with us. You will enjoy this forum. There is discussion or an answer for any question you could have. I am so glad that you are here and open for discussion. I see that you have listed yourself as agnostic. It is hard as an adult to open your heart to something so difficult to understand as faith, religion, God, etc. When you are humble and open and willing to learn, I believe God will give you answers you are looking for. Feel free to ask anything you need to.

Hey conflictedboy!!!

I just wanted to let you know that I am excited for you. Before you go to mass, sit down in prayer and reflection. You should do this before every mass. I am guilty sometimes of runnin’ around and running out of time to prepare for mass. It really does make a difference. Take at least a few minutes to pray and reflect about everything, especially your attitude, having a humble and open heart, and mindful of your sins that you want to rid yourself of the habits of. I like to say an Act of Contrition too. Anyway, enjoy your first mass. It is a beautiful thing to experience.

I might not be here much the next couple weeks or so because Im extremely busy with school and everything but, I do want to say, I really want to use this coming summer to learn everything I can about Catholic history and doctrine, etc. Again, that you all for your support =)

Oh and I also wanted to say that lately, for reasons i just dont know (but its great so yea), I have strong desire to learn more about my God, and His Church.
Example: Lent was kind of a disappointment for me this year because it was the first time I had ever really known what its all about and just how Biblically grounded it all is. I didnt start studying the purpose until it was almost over (my current church celebrates it, but its not as pronounced. ) I did do my little symbolic thing on Good Friday, I didnt eat at all until dinner then I had fish, and did NOT have any meat until Easter Sunday. *idk if i did it right
(in my family we have had our practice of eating only fish for Good Friday, so yea theres some familiarity)

if i am offically a Roman Catholic next year (and thats a big if …im just asking for Gods wisdom on the matter, day by day), i CANT WAIT for Lent and to get tradition done right =)
(uve prolly figured out by now that i like tradition, and the RCC is rich with it. dont worry my reason for joining would be God and God alone =) )
Praying the Rosary is an amazing experience btw, I cant believed ive gone this far in life without it and thats considering im still young! =)

Lent/Easter is by far my favorite season of the year now. I totally get what you mean. There’s just nothing quite like it.

I’ll just point out that the Catholic Church is 23 churches united under the pope. You want heavy doses of tradition? Attend an Armenian Catholic, Coptic Catholic, or Melkite liturgy. All Catholic. All steeped in tradition. All far older liturgies than even the EF Roman liturgy.
