The Tanakh!? I’ve never heard of it!
It’s our word for what you call the ‘Old Testament’ (from ‘Torah/Nevi’im/Kethuvim’), you’ve obviously not been involved in any threads on ‘Non-Catholic Religions’ concerning Judaism.

Why would I be interested in Jews!? All I care about is catholicism, protestantism and mormonism… I love Christ, our saviour. 😃

Didn’t expect that you would be, heaven’s I just thought that some Christians might be interested in our selection and ordering. If you’re not interested, just ignore.

I will not ignore you, you just took me by surprise, is all.

the so called “catholic letters” are so called because they are not addressed to a specific community or person. they are addressed to everyone universally.

I would like to express dismay for the tone of the responses to Kaninchen, and thank her for her interesting addition to the conversation.

What catagory is that then? Thanks.
Acts and Revelation. 😃

If you want a name for it, Acts is sometimes called the “Gospel of the Holy Spirit.” It is similar to the Gospels in that it’s a narrative work, but it follows the early Church, so it can’t really be considered in the same category as the Gospels. It’s basically a historical book.

Revelation is an Apocalypse. That’s a style all it’s own.
Are you saying that the site I used for this information is incorrect?

Vatican: the Holy See
Official site for the Vatican, hub of the Catholic Church. Includes a library, archives, museums, updates, and latest news.

Yes, that is the Vatican website, but it’s not as though it is an infallible proclamation of the Church that these are the categories of Scripture. The Vatican website also has the first English edition of the Catechism rather than the second edition (which is the normative one). They can’t keep up with everything. 🙂

In any case, I don’t think the ordering on the Vatican website is intended to convey that Acts is one of the Gospels and Revelation is one of the Catholic Letters. They just tacked them on the end of those sections because that’s where they fall in the New Testament and they don’t really fit in with any other book in a neat little category. I have never seen any Church document that claims we have five Gospels, and I have never seen anyone claim that Revelation is one of the Catholic Letters.

Jesus was a Jew, as were all the Apostles. You should definitely be interested in Jews!

Recall 4Nostra Aetate from the Second Vatican Council:
As the sacred synod searches into the mystery of the Church, it remembers the bond that spiritually ties the people of the New Covenant to Abraham’s stock.
Thus the Church of Christ acknowledges that, according to God’s saving design, the beginnings of her faith and her election are found already among the Patriarchs, Moses and the prophets. She professes that all who believe in Christ-Abraham’s sons according to faith (6)-are included in the same Patriarch’s call, and likewise that the salvation of the Church is mysteriously foreshadowed by the chosen people’s exodus from the land of bondage. The Church, therefore, cannot forget that she received the revelation of the Old Testament through the people with whom God in His inexpressible mercy concluded the Ancient Covenant. Nor can she forget that she draws sustenance from the root of that well-cultivated olive tree onto which have been grafted the wild shoots, the Gentiles.(7) Indeed, the Church believes that by His cross Christ, Our Peace, reconciled Jews and Gentiles. making both one in Himself.(8)
The Church keeps ever in mind the words of the Apostle about his kinsmen: “theirs is the sonship and the glory and the covenants and the law and the worship and the promises; theirs are the fathers and from them is the Christ according to the flesh” (Rom. 9:4-5), the Son of the Virgin Mary. She also recalls that the Apostles, the Church’s main-stay and pillars, as well as most of the early disciples who proclaimed Christ’s Gospel to the world, sprang from the Jewish people.

You are funny! The Old Testament IS Jewish. Jesus was a Jew as were most of the characters in the New Testament. Jesus came to fulfil the prophesies in the Old Testament.

Catholicism is the fullness and completion of Judaism. Never forget that Jesus, the Apostles, and of course the Blessed Virgin were all Jewish. The reason we know that Jesus (or if in Hebrew Yeshua ben-Yosuf) was the Christ (Hebrew: Messiah) is because of the writings in the Hebrew Canon.

Not exactly. The link you supplied is the breakdown of Books for the New American Bible. In that Bible, there were three different publication dates, and what it shows as “the Pentateuch” are the first round of published books.

Think about it… “penta” - FIVE. It’s not the Octateuch, it’s the PENTAteuch. 5 books of the law, first 5 books of the Catholic OT. The first publication included 3 additional books, and probably (I do not know) uses the classification because that’s what most of that publication contained.
Why are they called catholic letters?
Because unlike the Pauline letters that were addressed to a specific person (eg. Timothy) or a specific church, these letters are meant for universal teaching. Catholic, from the Greek catholica, meaning “everywhere” or “universal.”

In using Hebrew scripture,I use Hebrew designations.I find it easier for my students to grasp.using a tanakh has helped me greatly with the NT, and fully understanding it.If you separate Jesus from his Judaism ,you separate jesus from his humanity.Being fully human he was nutured by his culture, his language and his people- this was his frame of reference. To undertand it ,is to understand Him better.

You guys have taken me the wrong way…😦
You see, I was asking for the catholic answers for my original question because I have only just come to catholicism from methodism and I didn’t want to get confused by taking notes of the wrong answers; such as a jewish answer. Do you understand that? 🤷

Understand, but what’s wrong with getting information about the Old Testament straight from the horse’s mouth?😉

I doubt if a modern day Jew would have any more insight into the Old Testament than anyone else who studys Scripture.

They see the OT differently to catholics. That’s why I was complaining to her about posting that without telling me, because I nearly wote it down as catholic doctrine!

I see your point-kinda like a Baptist explaining the Book of James to a Catholic and them not knowing they were Baptist
