I was wondering, is it okay to pray the Holy Rosary while having a glass of wine?

It’s ok to pray the rosary everywhere and anywhere.

In the supermarket check out line.

One of my priest-friends in an extremely busy parish said there is one room in the rectory where NO ONE will ever bother you. So he suggested using those few minutes to pray … the rosary.

While walking somewhere.

In bed while waiting to fall asleep.

In the car while commuting.

My favorite place was a church that had an unorthodox building layout; it was a semi-circle. And the whole back wall was one giant stained glass window … a hundred feet long … with the Stations of The Cross in life sized figures in metal with the stained glass around the figures. And I loved to stop by there after work, with the setting sun streaming through … silhouetting the images of the figures in the Stations of The Cross … and I could walk the Stations and say the Sorrowful Mysteries at the same time. And it was late in the day and there was no one there except me … and Jesus in the Tabernacle.

Probably the only exception would be … to not be noticed by anyone. Not be observed. Prayer is for communication between us and God and Mary and the Saints. It’s NOT for getting credit from our friends and neighbors.

And, if you’re by yourself, perhaps at a quiet time, having a glass of wine, relaxed, mind open in prayer. What could be better?

Just you and Jesus (who, by the way, was known to enjoy a glass of wine … after all … that was His first miracle!) … relaxed and discussing the events of His life.

And feel free to “chat” with Him … ask Him questions about His life. Maybe even take a few notes for later research. Enjoy the experience. No need for prayer experience to be unpleasant and difficult.

It seems strange, but I have said the Rosary a few times lately while having a glass of wine and I actually seemed to be able to enter more deeply into the mysteries.

Thanks for the replies. But what if the glass of wine is your 3rd, 4th or 5th? I take it as long as one is sincere, it doesn’t matter?

I do not drink everyday. But some days are more stressful than others, and I hope when I do have some wine it doesn’t have to change my prayer life.

Thanks…

Reminds me of a (sort of) joke of a conversation between a seminarian and his mentor. The seminarian asked if it were ok to smoke while he was praying. The mentor steamed back “Of course not!” Then, after thinking a while, he asked if he could pray while he smoked. The mentor then replied “Of course. Very good, my son.”

If your day is stressful, perhaps you should add some prayers prior to the source of the stress. Perhaps you should slow down your rosary a bit, meditating and conversing a little with Mary in between decades, or even pausing on her name to imagine her splendor.

Can you imagine being stressed out with the Blessed Virgin standing right there with you…?? Not me.

And if you are going to drink, like I do sometimes in the evening, I make it a point to pray before that. Cause drinking nearly puts me to sleep anyway so…

Ave Maria.

I would think that if that glass of wine/spirits causes some abuse than praying the Rosary while you have it may very well be one of the best things you could do!!!😉

Think about it. You’re praying. And having a glass of wine. But you’re still praying. Nothing to do with sincerity. Just getting a little mellow.

If you’re praying, you’re not likely to get a 4th or 5th.

Let’s not take hypotheticals to extremes. That’s how we get ourselves tied in knots. We end up banning activities that if taken to extremes might possibly be harmful. I mean if you pray and you relax, then if you pray too much, you might relax so much that your heart stops. How likely is that? Not very.

The taking of positive or neutral hypothetical examples to extremes is fun … sarcastic … and it gets us into so much trouble that it results in serious negative territory for all of society.

Just pray the Rosary, without the sarcasm. Just pray.

the rosary is powerfull. it is a true magnet to miracles. it is not to be misused or taken so casual. its purpose is to bridge the gap between us and the spiritual. prey the rosary in a quiet, solemn and meaningfull matter.

there is a reason why many preyers remain answered. we have only to notice the manner in which we prey.

That’s an old story, and I think the moral is that although there are times when our full attention should be turned toward Our Lord, i,e, at Holy Mass, Saint Paul tells us to pray always, which would involve praying while doing other things. I once heard a story about a nun who attempted to pray the Our Father constantly during the day, and eventually, constantly running through the Lord’s Prayer while doing just about anything became automatic.

Also, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina was often seen with one hand hidden in the breast of his habit. Underneath, he kept a rosary, and would say it constantly, even during conversation or work–don’t ask me how he did it; Saintly virtue, I suppose–but he would often say around 40 a day. I guess we could all follow his example and say the rosary as often as we can, whether we’re driving, working, waiting, or even drinking. Just don’t do that first one and last together and you’ll be fine.

Padre Pio had a special gift that enabled him to concentrate of three things at once.

At 3:00 pm today, I prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet with a glass of wine. I am sure I did nothing wrong, but only attained graces for doing such.
