…Or common etymology with [papal] bull…? sheesh!

The real reason they are anti-smurfy: There is only one smurfette for all the smurfs, instead of the other way around (Oh wait: That’s the reason why the *Mormons *are anti-smurfy :rotfl: )

tee
 :rotfl: Holy cow! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

But you do know, Mormons now get excommunicated if they practice polygamy… at least that’s how it is in Texas… Just checking that you knew the reality. Good joke though, but let’s be careful it doesn’t become racism.

The JW’s might be opposed to the Smurfs marxist ideals.

The Smurf Village itself is a perfect model of a socialist commune or collective. It is self-reliant, and the land is not owned by individuals, but by the entire collective of all the Smurfs, if the word ‘owned’ is even appropriate.

Papa Smurf represents Karl Marx. He is not so much the leader of the Smurfs as an equal revered by the others for his age and wisdom. He has a beard, as did Marx, and thus could conceivably be a caricature as well. And lastly, he wears red, which is the traditional colour of socialism. Brainy Smurf could represent Trotsky. He is the only one in the village who comes close to matching Papa’s intellect - he is a thinker. With his round spectacles, he could also be a caricature of Trotsky. He is often isolated, ridiculed or even ejected from the commune of the village for his ideas. And of course, Trotsky was banished from the USSR.

Despite their different professions/distinctions, the Smurfs are all completely equal. Thus, while the occupations of certain Smurfs, such as Farmer, Handy and Greedy, are more important than others, such as Clumsy, Grouchy, or Lazy, there is no feeling that certain Smurfs are superior or inferior to others because of their work, or level of skill, because ultimately, everyone is a Smurf first.

Economically, the Smurf Village is closed-market. There is no money, and all possessions are communal - property of the collective. Everyone is equally a worker and an owner. The Smurfs reject the idea of a free-market economy, with its greed and inequities, and the collective is more important and valuable than the individual. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. John Lennon asked us to ‘imagine no possessions’. The Smurf Village achieves that goal. In fact, many of the ideas expressed in that song are reality in the Village. There is one large piece of capital, or produced means of production, in the Smurf Village: the dam. It is owned, operated and repaired by the entire collective.
The Smurfs all refer to one another by the same title; ‘Smurf’. Eg, Brainy Smurf, Handy Smurf, Jokey Smurf, Lazy Smurf, Papa Smurf. This is highly reminiscent of socialist states’ use of the word ‘comrade’ when referring to others, instead of more elitist titles.

Adding to the idea of complete equality in the Village, most of the Smurfs wear the same kind and colour of clothes. It is a general work uniform, and with the distinctive caps and blue skin, is highly reminiscent of the so-called Mao Suit, common in Maoist China.
In the tradition of pure Marxism, the Smurf Village is atheist. There is no god, and there is no Priest Smurf. There are only the ‘real’ forces of nature and physics, and these are represented metaphorically by the characters of Mother Nature and Father Time. Of course, there is also magic, as practised by Papa, Gargomel, Balthazar and others, but it is simply another tool, something that occurs in nature, that has physical properties and can be tapped into, with the right know-how. It is not, as many religions are, a way of understanding the universe in a supernatural context.

Gargomel’s ginger cat, Azrael, represents the worker in the ruthless, free-market state that is Gargomel’s house. He is uncomplaining, or, since he has no voice (ie. Trade Unions), is metaphorically unable to complain. He cannot negotiate his wage - he eats whatever he is given by his master. He is smaller and less well-off than Gargomel, and metaphorically, he represents the proletariat, while Gargomel represents the bourgeoise. Azrael is exploited and oppressed.

Wow, Chrismyster, you are very knowledgeable about the smurfs! That is practically a doctoral dissertation on smurf-dom! I had no idea that cartoons were so deep!

All I have to say is:
Thanks for the laughs…

Hey now, don’t let me hear anybody dragging Fred Rogers through the mud with BARNEY! Mr. Rogers wouldn’t waste the breath needed to give Barney a grammar lecture.

Some of my Evangelical cousins in Texas were not allowed to watch the smurfs when they were kids. I was recently asking one of them if they knew why that was, and evidently it was because the smurfs would bow down and worship a statue of another smurf. Of course they totally cheated and whenever the other cousins would watch the smurfs, they would be peeking around the corner to see what was going on.

i can’t take the credit… the link at the bottom of my post is the source of that rant. i just found it amusing and wanted to share. he’s the political mind, i just copied and pasted!

okay, so here is how it goes. do you all remember me talking to you about the lady jw that had been coming to my house and trying to get me to study with them?

well, here is how the visit turned out yesterday. remember the 1975 prediction that they made? how 1 million witnesses left the organization because of the failed prophecy of armageddon?

well… this came up. i asked her to look up matt:4 -10 and jude 9. in matt 4:10 Jesus is rebuking satan. which He has the authority to do. in jude 9, you see there Micheal the Archangel telling satan “God rebuke you”.

If Jesus were Micheal, he would not have the authority to rebuke satan. Since Christ is not Micheal, He does have the authority to rebuke satan. And He did.

See, Micheal does not have the authority to judge the devil, but Jesus does. When this was pointed out to the jw lady, she got really defensive with me as i expected her to do so.

so, i changed the subject. i asked her, how do you feel when people lie to you? she said she hates it. i then said, do you remember 1975? she said yes i do. i said, well, that was a predicted date for the end wasn’t it? she tried to skirt around the issue caliming that “oh some brothers made that prediction” i said, not true, the watchtower society made it.

she started getting pretty hyper with me. she was flustered. she said, no, some brothers made that statement and not the society, and i want you to prove it to me! i said, gladly. she agreed to come back for the proof. whether she does or not
is remaining to be seen.

she told me that the society never stated that the end would come in 1975, she was there she said, and she should know. i told her yes, they did make a false prediction. the young woman with her, well, her eyes were gawking at me to say the least.

i said to her, what about all the other false predictions of the end since 1920’s? she denied it happening. man, these people are so indoctrinated that it is unbelievable! i neve rused my Bible either when i asked her to look it up. i asked her to read the 2 scriputres from her bible which she did.

the girl who was with her looked a little surprised at the entire conversation. i hope that a seed was planted yesterday. its in God’s hands. if she returns, i will have the proof that she wants.

I was in the JW’s in 1975. It was a big fat hairy deal, but I do recall that the Society itself did not make any predictions outright. They did say that 1975 indicated 6000 years since man’s creation so it would make sense if something happened but stopped just shy of saying it would. If you have something more on this will you post it? New thread or here; where ever I’d like to see it.

The didn’t specify that it WOULD occur specifically in 1975 itself, but they did provide a framework that meant that it couldn’t come very much later than 1975.

Their teaching at the time was, that the Generation alive in 1914 and OLD ENOUGH in 1914 to understand world events, would still be going strong at Armageddon.
Coupled with that, they emphasized that a generation biblically is 70 years, perhaps 80 years at the maximum.
Now, you had to be at least 15 in 1914 to understand world events.

So, someone born in 1899 would be about 76 years old
by 1975, which is right in the middle of the 70 year to 80 year age range for the lifetime of a generation.
And they stressed that this prophecy (as it was being taught then) simply HAD to come to pass and WOULD.

okay, so why is it that they now only use the word “interpretation” instead of prediction? if someone is stating that it had to come to pass and would come to pass then is not saying the word “would” a prediction? surely you’d answer yes to that. saying something would come to pass is makng a prediction, not a guesstimate. it sounds to me like a prediction. does it not sound the same to you?

bjust b, see these articles: underlined by me for emphasis is “the year 1975” they are referring to 1975.

Awake! 1966 October 8 pp.19-20

“Does God’s rest day parallel the time man has been on earth since his creation? Apparently so. … In what year, then, would the first 6,000 years of man’s existence and also the first 6,000 years of Gods rest day come to an end? The year 1975. … It means that within a relatively few years we will witness the fulfilment of the remaining prophecies that have to do with the ”time of the end jwfacts.com/index_files/1975.htm

Watchtower 1968 May 1 p.272

“The immediate future is certain to be filled with climactic events, for this old system is nearing its complete end. Within a few years at most the final parts of Bible prophecy relative to these “last days” will undergo fulfilment.

jwfacts.com/index_files/1975.htm

Awake! 1968 October 8 p.13

“The fact that fifty-four years of the period called the “last days” have already gone by is highly significant. It means that only a few years, at most, remain before the corrupt system of things dominating the earth is destroyed by God jwfacts.com/index_files/1975.htm

What does the term within a ‘few years’ mean. It means less than ten years. For many followers reading the 1966 or 1968 article it meant 1975.

In 1968 an article goes into great detail to prove that 1975 really is the end of 6000 years, giving credence to this type of speculation.

Watchtower 1968 August 15 p.494 Why Are You Looking Forward to 1975?

“WHAT about all this talk concerning the year 1975? Lively discussions, some based on speculation, have burst into flame during recent months among serious students of the Bible. Their interest has been kindled by the belief that 1975 will mark the end of 6,000 years of human history since Adam’s creation. The nearness of such an important date indeed fires the imagination and presents unlimited possibilities for discussion.

2 But wait! How do we know their calculations are correct? What basis is there for saying Adam was created nearly 5,993 years ago? Does the one Book that can be implicitly trusted for its truthful historical accuracy, namely, the Inspired Word of Jehovah, the Holy Bible, give support and credence to such a conclusion?”

“35 One thing is absolutely certain, Bible chronology reinforced with fulfilled Bible prophecy shows that six thousand years of man’s existence will soon be up, yes, within this generation! (Matt. 24:34) This is, therefore, no time to be indifferent and complacent. This is not the time to be toying with the words of Jesus that “concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matt. 24:36) To the contrary, it is a time when one should be keenly aware that the end of this system of things is rapidly coming to its violent end. Make no mistake, it is sufficient that the Father himself knows both the “day and hour”!

36 Even if one cannot see beyond 1975, is this any reason to be less active? The apostles could not see even this far; they knew nothing about 1975. All they could see was a short time ahead in which to finish the work assigned to them

jwfacts.com/index_files/1975.htm

Awake! 1971 October 8 a timeline was presented with the “Millennial reign of Jesus Christ” starting on the seven thousandth year.

Watchtower 1974 December 15 p.766

“And now, as the year 1975 opens up, some thousands of the anointed remnant, still alive on this earth, look ahead to realizing that joyful prospect. The increasing “great crowd” of their sheeplike companions look forward with them to entering the New Order without interruption of life. In the New Order Jehovah God will add to the “length of days” of the anointed remnant on earth to the point of satisfying the members thereof. It remains to be seen whether they will be yet retained here on earth to see the start of the resurrection of the earthly dead and to meet faithful witnesses of ancient, pre-Christian times. They would enjoy that, before being taken off the earthly scene to the heavenly reward with Christ.”

This teaching had a dramatic effect on people’s lives. In 1974 the Kingdom Ministry reported that the number of pioneers boomed, with people commended for selling homes to spend the short time left in God’s Service.

Hi Marilena,
I agree with your comment wholeheartedly.
I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say in my above post about 1975.

What I meant was, though they didn’t come right out and use the words, “Armageddon will come around 1975,”
they did everything to make their readers come to that conclusion. So yes, in their roundabout way they most definitely did predict that Armageddon would occur around the mid to late 1970s. Remember, their teaching was that the “generation of 1914” meant those alive in 1914 and OLD ENOUGH in 1914 to understand world events, and they themselves referenced 15 years of age as minimum to understand world events. And remember, Armageddon had to come within that particular generation’s lifetime. Then they drove the point home by reminding us that “the bible says” that a generation means the lifetime of a person, from 70 to maybe 80 years of age. Thus, the 1914 generation would have turned 76 and older in 1975. This is the damning proof that they DID predict the end of the world for the mid to late 1970s, because by 1979, the 15 year olds of 1914 would be 80 years old. Thus Armageddon was due no later than 1980, following their caluculations. Well, 1975 was 31 years ago.
And 1980 was 26 years ago. Either way, they MADE a prophecy (by the use of mathematical formulae), and they made the prophecy in God’s Name claiming His Full Authority, and here we are in 2006 going into 2007, and their prophecy, frankly, FLOPPED, as did all their other predictions about the time of the “accomplished end” as they call it.

NOW they are whipping up the rank and file JWs into a frenzy with this stupid “The End of False Religion is Near !!” hysterical campaign.

The fact is, the Watchtower Society has a 100% Failure record when it comes to predicting Divine Activity. Why should ANYONE (unless he is literally insane) trust their current prediction about “false religion” or anything else?
You’d have to be delusional or a maniac to believe those people in Brooklyn.

Hopefully I don’t get too in trouble for resurecting this old thread, but i had some points i remembered about this as a child.

1st, in a story i heard about from a record on the smurfs, they were created by a benevolent wizard who wanted them to be happy and free, and enjoy the world as he himself did. So he created all the Smurfs, and put them into paradise. Then seemed to leave them be. So in a way, there WAS a reference to a ‘divine’ element. But it wasn’t the warm and close divine God we know, more of an element of a god wanting happiness for others, but not carrying enough to meddle or help. A distant god if you will.

2nd. If I remember correctly, the villain, Gargomel was the apprentice of said wizard, and was jealous of his master’s devotion to these little blue creatures. That jealousy and bitterness turned into rebellion and destruction as Gargamel decided to destroy the Smurfs, or use them to make himself wealthy and powerful. This sounds a bit like Lucifer or elements of Lucifer.

3, Azreal, Gargamel’s cat’s, name in Hebrew traditions is the same as an angel that in some of those very traditions is the route of evil. The very beginning of it, and thus reiinforces the idea that Gargamel and Azreal as a symbol of the devil, where as the benelovent wizard is again a symbol of God. Or ‘a’ god anyway.

As for there being no pope smurf or priest smurf, i fixed that! zhaneaugustine.deviantart.com/gallery/#cartoons
