The use of sacramentals by whom?
The CAF Spirituality Forum has any number of threads detailing how anyone can use sacramentals against demonic forces in possessed objects, places and people. I am aware that there’s a difference between using sacramentals properly and using them superstitiously, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have a role in what is known as spiritual warfare.

I was thinking about how protective we feel about consecrated hosts and our mere human strengths versus God’s strength. We enjoy His presence and, rightly so, wish to ensure that presence is treated with the reverence it deserves. So, then I was wondering what would happen in the case of a host falling into hostile hands. I suppose there are only a two options. 1). The host remains the Body of Christ or 2) The host ceases to be the Body of Christ. Since we don’t have any way to accomplish the second option, we trust the God will do what God wishes with the host. His ways are unknown to us. So, then, I wondered, would He somehow remove His presence? Well, God can do anything He wants, but I was thinking that, no, He wouldn’t. He cannot be hurt by what His mere creatures do to His presence on earth. We are puny and small. However, what if, by His own ways, the host, which we mourn the loss of, can still change hearts? It’s like bullies in grade school. They harrass and pick on someone and, at the time, it makes them feel bigger. But later? They feel bad, deep down. What effect will it have on the souls of those who would desecrate the host? Will they someday reflect back with regret and shame? If just one person does, is that not worth it to God? His ways are not our ways. We should do all we can, and pray for those who do wrong, but in the end, recognize that God’s will is what will be done and trust Him.

I guess I’m tying to say to protect the host, as much as you can, but don’t let your disgust prevent you from praying for those who mean to desecrate it. A demonstration of what the host means to us Catholics is good. The image of being there, as the woman was at the foot of the cross, is very powerful. But beyond that, pray that God’s will be done and be at peace. Trust Him.

I hope this makes sense. Am I way off here?
This IS what the archbishop of OK is doing. Praying. Not much else we can do and hope our praying will do some good for all involved. As far as the host, Catholics need to protect it as far as we can and I don’t think anyone will be passing them out to those who don’t believe in hopes it will do them some good.

I think you summed it up when you said , “How perfectly ridiculous of them”…all they are doing is making people see the idiocy of it…especially doing it in the Bible belt!
But, I would be far more concerned about those who give religion a terrible name…such as the Westboro Baptist Church.
Very well put. I honestly don’t understand the Westboro group and why they seem to lack such charity in their hearts–but call themselves Christian. I pray for them to glean understanding of the pain they cause.

Glad I’m not way off. Thanks.

I agree. To take without faith or with faith but without being in a state of grace would be dangerous. Passing out to anyone? No, that isn’t something a priest would want to do.

And Catholic teaching is that their power is dependent on the faith of the person using it. Anything else is in the realm of magic charms, which is not to say that you won’t find Catholics who are sure that anyone burying a St Joseph statue upside down will magically sell their house.

If a Satanist, who is typically an anti-theist who wants to show either that Sacramentals do nothing, or to deliberately show disrespect to the Sacramentals, splashes holy water about, then the water doesn’t magically repel evil all by itself.

Sacramentals specifically do not act independently of the faith and will of the person using them.

I have shown you the old Catholic Encyclopedia article that explains this (I find this typically helps offset any claims that something is a recent change to teaching). Would you also like to see the Catechism on this, or maybe the simplified Catechism? Holy water is not magic: it doesn’t repel anything by itself.

If i lived in Oklahoma i would show up to their little ceremony and trash the place.
There is a non-violent solution. At adoration this morning it occured to me; why doesn’t someone show up, walk on stage, take the Blessed Sacrament and return it to the nearest church? I’m convinced that this is possible even though I doubt I’d have the courage or faith to pull it off if it was in my area. If it is consecrated it doesn’t belong to them so there would be nothing wrong with returning it to it’s rightful place.

I dont think youre understanding cornbread.

If satan is afraid of holy water and holy prayers, wouldn’t he be more afraid of Jesus Christ? So by brining Jesus to the black mass, wouldn’t that scare away all the invisible evil?
Was Satan too scared to confront Jesus physically on this Earth?

When some Catholics advise others to use blessed water, salt and oil against demons, just what are they hoping to accomplish if not for the demons to vacate the person, home, object, etc.? And again, if those things can be used successfully toward that end, then why wouldn’t a consecrated host be infinitely more effective in ridding the civic center and immediate environs of demons?
I don’t assume that Satan is present at black masses like God is at catholic masses.
And again, I don’t know if it is a physical connection that harms the devil but it is obviously more complicated than just the presence of christ as the devil himself physically tempted Jesus in the new testament

I’ve reached out to the members I could find on facebook that are organizing this or attending this.

I got a few responses you would expect. One of the bands that will be performing at the event says he isn’t a Satanist but an Atheist and is performing to show his disapproval of how Christians are treated better tahn other religions. We had a good civil discussion. I’m praying that his heart changes and his band doesn’t perform

I took all of that into consideration before I responded. It’s why I wrote that the sacramental was just “one component” in any process in which they could be used non-superstitiously.

When Jesus commanded him to leave, he left. When Jesus confronted demoniacs, the demons would cry out and plead that Jesus go away and leave them alone. It seems they do have an aversion to things that are holy.

I’m with all who think protest could be implemented besides prayer. AND, Sparkythedog, I feel that you are totally incorrect in your thinking. This WON’T stop at Oklahoma, if allowed, it will spread. I totally feel that all Catholics priests, bishops, deacons, and sisters in the area; and even our Holy Father should protest this event. Sometimes a shepherd must tend to his flock. I think that all who can should fly to OK. and protest this. C’MON, a huge statue of Satan holding little children on his lap in front of the County Courthouse!!! No, this is wrong. Once again, rights have replaced responsibilities. We’re a sad, ill nation…just my opinion. I’ve been an ardent Catholic for 66 yrs. and try to have the peace of our Lord in my heart at all times, but this one just gets to me on a whole other level.

I have read all the posts on this subject and truly appreciate the answers given to those who just don’t ‘get it’. I’m in the Tulsa diocese and have completed the Novena asked for by Bishop Slattery. Many in my parish did. Some nearby parishes were totally unaware of it tho! I will keep praying that this proposed blasphemous insult will be cancelled. And I agree with JPeters (?). Bishop Coakley should be the one to confront the defilers and ask that Our Blessed Lord be returned to him and then taken to His rightful place. This would take extraordinary courage, I know. Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help, O.P.N.

I’m horrified by this. I know I shouldn’t be. Christians (Catholic and non-Catholic) have been mocked and ridiculed for 2000 years, and satan is alive and well.
Black masses are not a “silly ritual”, they are hateful and offensive. They have Our Lord in the Eucharist and they will urinate and defecate and perform sexual acts with that consecrated host. I realize this happens regularly in the Satanic groups, but to have a city not only allow something like this in a public building, but also charge money to see the “show”?? That’s so wrong. It’s almost as if they were promoting Satan.
Let’s pray for an end to all black masses. Let’s pray for our country’s return to our Christian roots. Let’s pray Jesus’ prayer on the cross: “have mercy on them Lord for they not know what they do” (even though I’m not nice like Jesus and think they are very well aware of the significance of this hateful ritual…). Hate for Our Lord is what started things like this, let’s make our love for Him stop the devil in his tracks.

It seems by the video the Satanists who is putting on the black mass wants a confrontation. I hope no one acts out and gives him his way, at least not the Christians.

Mormons stand and pray then pass out literature about their church when the play that is on Broadway about them is shown. That is the best thing to do. It does present a teaching moment for the public.

Okay, so then you understand that the mere presence of holy water does nothing to frighten away evil. That is all I was trying to make clear, as you were talking about satanists using that sort of thing in perversions of Christian rituals, and then appeared to be suggesting that this would scare away the devil.

I totally agree with you. Some poster here repeatedly calls Black Mass “silly” to water down this evil event. Water down the evil nature of Black Mass and tell people to ignore the evil event is actually helping the evil. Making this evil event looks like nothing to worry about is surely lack of love for the Eucharist.

To you who think Black Mass is only silly: Would you be so indifferent if someone stomps on, or pees over your father’s or your mother’s or your brother’s relic? Would you say that is “silly”, do not pay attention??? A relic is part of the person’s dead body. The living Eucharist is the most precious body, blood, soul, and divinity of our Lord. The Black Mass insults the most Holy Eucharist. If you don’t want people to pee over your deceased loved one’s dead body, how could you ignore people’s vicious insult on our Beloved Lord’s living Eucharist?

I could not believe some poster repeatedly telling people that the most offensive thing is just “silly”. Calling Black Mass “silly” is not just silly. Stop helping the evil.

BREAKING: Archbishop Coakley Files Lawsuit Against Black Mass Organizers (4065)

The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City filed the lawsuit at noon today, asserting that the organizers’ consecrated host is Church property and was obtained fraudulently.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Attorneys for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City filed a lawsuit at noon today to stop the satanic black mass that organizers are planning to stage next month in the Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall.

The lawsuit asks the Oklahoma County Sheriff‘s Office to retrieve the consecrated host that the event‘s organizers claim to have, and return it to Oklahoma City Archbishop Paul Coakley. The lawsuit also argues that the consecrated host was obtained under fraudulent circumstances, and thus it must be returned to the archdiocese.

“Our contention is that they are in possession of stolen property,” Archbishop Coakley told the Register. “They cannot complete their satanic ritual without a consecrated host, and they have no means of acquiring one except through theft. We are asking the court to order them to return it immediately to me.”

Archbishop Coakley added that the archdiocese, in consulting with the attorneys who filed the lawsuit, formulated a sound argument rooted in canon and civil law.

“We are trusting the court will recognize that and act accordingly,” the archbishop said. “We hope this is a way that we can prevent the desecration of the Eucharist from taking place by removing from their possession what they have obtained illegally, that is the consecrated host.”

Michael Caspino, one of two attorneys who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the archdiocese in Oklahoma District Court said the legal argument for the case is simple: “A consecrated Eucharist belongs to the Church.”

Caspino, the CEO and partner at the Busch & Caspino law firm in Irvine, Calif., told the Register that the Church has exercised “dominion and control” over the Eucharist for more than 2,000 years. The lawsuit provides information on Church processes set up to safeguard the consecrated host.

“The Satanists procured the consecrated host by illicit means, theft or fraud,” Caspino said. “We are simply asking the court to return the stolen property to its rightful owner, the Roman Catholic Church.”

Named as defendants are Adam Daniels, an Oklahoma County resident, and Dakhma of Angra Mainyu, a group that has rented the Oklahoma City Civic Center’s 88-seat City Theater to stage the black mass on Sept. 21. Daniels, a member of Dakhma of Angra Mainyu, has told various media outlets that a friend mailed him the consecrated host, and that it will be desecrated, “stomped on” and destroyed during the satanic ritual.

Daniels, who has been involved in organizing public Satanist events in Oklahoma City since 2010, is a registered sex offender.
