A US woman has been shot while trying to remove a Nazi flag from someone’s front yard in the state of Oklahoma.

Garfield County Sheriff’s office said the woman had been at a party nearby when she took one of two flags being flown outside Alexander Feaster’s home.

Mr Feaster, 44, then reportedly shot her in the back with a semi-automatic rifle as she ran away.
Wow, the woman was shot 4 times but is expected to recover.

I am going to have a very unpopular response to this. Just please read the whole thing.

First - Feaster shooting the woman in the back without any warning was wrong and he should be held accountable for the crime it is.

Second - The woman had no right to go onto his property to remove anything, regardless of how offensive it may be. I disagree with Feaster’s beliefs 100%, I find them morally repugnant. However, Feaster does have the right in this country to have his beliefs, especially if he is not harming others directly with actions relative to his beliefs.

We have had a lot discussion about removing statues and monuments that some find offensive. In a way this is very similar. We may all find anything to do with the Nazis offensive, however the man has the right to express himself on his own property. It’s not much different than protesters shouting something along the lines of ‘roll em up like pigs in a blanket, fry them like bacon’ in regards to police officers. I find it offensive but they have the freedom to say it.

This is true, but the two are not remotely equivalent. We can’t imply that both parties are guilty of equal offenses here.

I did not make the claim they committed equal offenses. Feaster went way over the line in his response.

No, I know you’re not. I’m sure there will be folks who do, though. “Well, sure, murder is wrong, but she shouldn’t have touched his swastika flag…”

I disagree. I’ve only seen people refer to the rule of law in such cases as this, and there is no ‘castle doctrine’ or other established legal defense that throws doubt on his crime. Thus it seems you are projecting a stereotype on ‘some posters’ here.

“Recover” but to what extent? I’ve no doubt she will be living with the effects of this for the rest of her life, mentally if not physically (which is a big if).

Honestly the Nazi was in the wrong from the moment he put up the flag. I certainly wouldn’t be comfortable living near a neighbour who flies such things.

Since I’m from the Jewish faith, I’d be mighty uncomfortable, too. However I also believe that people may express their beliefs on their own property whether I like it or not. I’d definitely keep my eye on him!

I might try asking him to remove it or start a neighborhood petition to have it removed or hidden from the street view but I certainly wouldn’t go onto his property to try and remove it myself. That was an obviously foolish move on her part.

I’d try social pressure first and if that failed, maybe place my own version of protest on my property…an Israeli flag or UN flag or even a sign saying [address #] does not represent the feelings of his neighbors! There are better options to peacefully try and resolve the issue!

There are legal and far better ways to deal with an offensive neighbor than stealing his property. And taking his property in no way changes his beliefs or threat level.

What this woman did was technically illegal, but not immoral.

Remember, it was illegal for first century Christians to proclaim Christ.

I think you’d be hard pressed to find a qty of posters on any site that support your projection
Let’s just say you have a faith in the good sense of the internet that I don’t.

I’ll do my best. Clearly there’s a degree of sensitivity here. 😬

According to the article, it isn’t clear that she was stealing the flag. The whole thing seems weird.

The first line claims she was shot when she “took” the flag. Another sentence further down has something about this happening because she tried to “steal” the flag.

The article says he shot her in the back while she was running away.

As I understand it, that is not permissible, legally. If the person is moving away, then there is no danger to protect oneself from.

Honestly, take pictures of her stealing the flag and then charge her with theft and illegal trespass. Shooting her was a bit over the top and I hope he’s prosecuted for attempted murder or whatever the appropriate charge would be. Either way, let the law take care of it!
