The books being talked about in the OP are the Sacramentaries that parishes have to dispose of. These are traditionally blessed before being put into use on the altar so must be disposed of like any other blessed item, with respect.
We were instructed to either shred, burn or return our copy to the diocese for disposal. That’s so it doesn’t simply get thrown in the garbage. I think it might also be to prevent them being used instead of the new Roman Missal, which might happen if it’s kept on the shelf.
I don’t think you’re getting rid of your hymnals in the same way. Ours are not coming out of the pews; we were simply provided with a supplement which has the new translation of the Ordinary along with 3 new musical settings and the ICEL chant setting and 40 new-to-us hymns (50% from OCP).
