I loved Bernadette and Fatima. I wished everyone could see these movies and their messages.🙂

All the ones you’ve mentioned, plus:
MIRACLE OF MARCELINO - DVD from EWTN
Left on the doorstep of a monastery as an infant, Marcelino was raised by the Monks. He was well cared for, but lonely, and missed having a mother. One day he found a special friend in the forbidden attic… hanging on a cross. A friend that would repay Marcelino’s kindness by granting him one heartfelt wish.
This was such a sweet movie, I cried. I saw it on EWTN and I plan to buy it for Christmas…for myself

My favorite line in any movie was in the “Greatest Story Ever Told”, when king Herod heard the news of Jesus Resurrection, he said “Oh, it will all be gone tomorrow”. Hahaha:D

Well, I was born in 1955, so I can’t remember. (but I look 35).😃
Me too!😃 I have seen several of these on EWTN though, specifically the one with Raymond Burr. One of my favorite movies is called “A Time To Remember.”
It’s a sweet movie starring Donald O’Connor & Morgana King.

not a movie, TV production, but I miss Amahl and the Night Visitors, an opera which used to be shown every Christmas season on TV. what was the drama show that had Loretta Young as host, I used to love her coming out in that swirly dress to announce the program, and longed for a dress like that (still my standard of elegance), and the programs usually had moral, wholesome themes if not overtly Catholic.

I like that movie too! I have the VCD; I watch it almost everyday (since we have no other good DVDs or VCDs)
But the one who says that line is Caiaphas actually.

So basically, here’s my favorite Religious movies:

The Greatest Story Ever Told
Ben-Hur (the 1925 silent version)
Jesus (1999 mini-series with Jeremy Sisto in the title role. Made me almost cry once when I saw the Crucifixion and Jesus screaming in pain)
Jesus of Nazareth
The Passion of the Christ
Jesus (that 1979 film by the Campus Crusade for Christ, taken from the Gospel of Luke)
The Gospel according to Saint Matthew
Kristo (means ‘Christ’ in Tagalog. Got to be the first Jesus movie I saw with rather severe Passion violence.)
The Miracle of Marcelino

…I just noticed that most Jesus films omit the Transfiguration (save for that early 1905 ‘Life and Passion of Jesus Christ’ and the 1979 'Jesus). Why is that?

I am sorry Patrick, you may have it confused with another movie, but it is actually Herod who said that line. I can see his face in my head. John The Baptist was stating to him how he is sleeping with his brother’s wife. Remember? That same man was Herod.

Oh and don’t forget the movie “Barabbas.” Loved that movie b/c he came to believe in the end.

If you are talking about the Greatest Story ever Told (1965), then it’s the same.

It’s actually Caiaphas, since the scene goes like:
some of the priests report that Jesus’ body disappeared.
Then Caiaphas asks if the soldiers were asleep.
The priests report that they swore thay did’nt.
then the lines go like:

Zerah: Of course they do, the Roman punishment for sleeping on duty is death.
Caiaphas: Incredible. But I guess the whole thing will be forgotten in a week.
Priest on window: I wonder…

But I did like the portrayal of Herod in there. It’s just different than those I commonly see.

Yes, maybe you’re right. I am going to watch it right now…I’ll let you know…

Unquestionably for me it is Ben Hur. I watch it once a year. But I also liked:

Quo Vadis
The Robe
Demetrius and the Gladiators
The Silver Chalice
A Man for All Seasons

And I remember watching Bishop Sheen live. And while not explicitly Catholic, Shirley Temple Presents was great entertainment. (I never missed a Leonard Bernstein “Young People’s Concert” - they got me hooked on classical music).

I loved Quo Vadis, especially when St. Peter gathered the people underground and spoke. I love what he said. I pictured myself there…

sorry Patrick, it was Herod who said that sentence, I just saw the movie 🙂

the movie was so long, it had to be at the end. Remember at the beginning when King Herod died after they killed all the “Holy Innocents”? Then his son took over, Herod the 2nd and he’s the one who said it.
Lord Caiaphas was in it not too much. Pontius Pilate was Telly Savalas…funny.

During the Resurrection scenes?
I’ll watch it again perhaps tomorrow to check…

Why is there a trend to depict Pilate as bald right now?

And did you see that character portrayed by Donald Pleasence who tempts Jesus in the desert?
He appeared during the time Jesus went to Capernaum, saying ‘Hail Son of David’ and in the midst of the people looking at Jesus (rather with hate, i think).
Also during Judas went off to sell Jesus…Judas walks into the shadow and he is in there…
He’s also the one who questions Peter twice if he knows Jesus.
When Jesus is led away from Herod to Pilate, we hear him quoting John 3:16 (he seems to have a tinge of mockery as he says it, especially the part 'that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but should have Everlasting Life).
And, finally, he’s one who shouted ‘Crucify Him’!

The thing I ask, is he supposed to be the Devil? Why did he show up in scenes like these? What is the purpose of him being in those situations?

Yes, he is the devil. The devil comes in many disguises. Remember The Passion, when the devil was depicted as a woman? I loved that scene of Temptation when Jesus was so strong He said “Thou shall not tempt the Lord thy God”. The purpose I think was to show good vs. evil. The devil kind of lingered around, aggravating Peter and of course the first to yell “Crucify Him”.
The only Pilate I liked was The Passion of The Christ’s Pilate. He was so good, his soul was restless, didn’t want to kill Jesus.

Funny I should be reading this thread now - Quo Vadis is playing on my television right this minute! I’d love to see more movies made about the lives and times of the Apostles - they all seem to focus on Jesus, don’t they.

Yep. Give the Apostles a credit! They wrote the Gospels after all…😃

I seriously would want to see a movie about the life of Saint Peter. He’s the Rock after all (though i guess Protestants would contest that)

I have a catalog of all the movies you want to see. I will look for it and give you the address so you may order them.
