The example of Valentinus is at best problematic for your case. Valentinus was a Gnostic. Gnostics would naturally try to claim the apostles as their own for purposes of adding to their Gnostic credibility.
John was not a Gnostic and clearly saw the Gnostics as anti-Christ. John is anti-Gnostic. Valentinus or any other Gnostic that claimed that John was Gnostic had to be making a deliberately false claim or had to be doing what Peter says about the ignorant and unstable that “twist the scriptures to their own destruction.” The claim by Valentinus is similar to a hypothetical situation where Hillary Clinton would try to claim that George Bush is a democrat. There simply is no credibility to these kinds of things and it is obvious on its face.
